In this thread, we present faulty arguments which are voiced in support of political positions we agree with. After all, if a certain position is true, it does not mean that every argument for said position is a good one.

I'll start.

The US invasion of Iraq and intervention in Libya were bad because Saddam Hussein and Muammar Qaddafi were heroic fighters against Western oppression whose hearts were full of love for their people.

Colonialism (and neocolonialism) is wrong because it hurts the pristine culture of the colonized. Every culture needs to be kept as pristine as possible.

Current political situation in Russia is bad because Russian state structure is different from American one. We all should be more like America.

ron paul thinks so!
This video crushed my browser, but from what I've watched, it doesn't seem to use that specific argument.

The US invasion of Iraq was justified, because of the opressor Saddam Hussein, and as the most armed country in the world we should take care of citizens of the world.

Awesome video. Seriously

So you support the invasion of Iraq? You're supposed to list faulty arguments for views you support here!

it makes it obliquely, with emphasis on "heroic fighters against western oppression"
Well, it's possible to differentiate between the people of the countries invaded by the US, and their leaders like Saddam. The phrase is too oblique to really count.

Anyway, more bad arguments.

More drugs should be decriminalized because alcohol and tobacco are as bad as some of them.

Taxes for the wealthy should be raised because the wealthy have enough money on their hand.

"Socialism doesn't work and always devolves into dictatorship." - often used by capitalists to support why socialism and communism and all that stuff are bad.

I consider it highly flawed as it ignores the fact Communism has never been given a chance in an industrialised nation(as proposed by Marx), and it's just self-serving. I do consider capitalism the best system for the status quo, but it's wishful thinking to believe what's best now will be best thousands of years in the future.

Social Democracy is the best ideology because I'll kill you if you disagree with me.

You can't get any worse than that.

We should take care of Mother Earth because She will be sad if we don't.

We should take care of Mother Earth because She will be sad if we don't.

Perfectly legit, imo.

Also, because we wuv it, and don't want to mess up the established cycles and processes which sustain it the way it is

My political positions are supposed to be fundamentally wrong because they are purely based on my self-interest.

"Genetic engineering should be restricted because it's unnatural."

I hate the "it'sunnatural" argument. Houses are unnatural. Electronic devices are unnatural.
