CBob03 Germans in Tu-tus

Thats what surprised me with Feudalism, the stupendous amount of unit support. Democazy definitely kills that, so I say no to Democrazy. Republic is fine, but Anarchy to get there really sucks. If Feud didn't have the whip for hurrying, it'd be fine.

Democrazy. LOL.

I think Demo would be fine if we trim down our military some. With a (fairly) narrow land border, we wouldn't need much to keep a capable defense up while we head into the endgame.

What about Communism? We could balance the budget on a town-by-town basis!

I don't have anything against Republic per se, but I do really like the idea of using one of the "forgotten" governments if we need to revolt. In my mind, it's at least worth some discussion :)

Communism and Fascism have the same problem as Feudalism, the whip for hurrying. I see no real advantage to Democracy, the unit costs are the killer. I think we will end up going Republic, or staying Feudal. Our massive territory can support all those upkeep costs with any government, so now it's down to style points.

Whipping isn't a problem; you just need to manage growth and short-rushing a bit more carefully than with cash rushing.

In other news, I'm done with my turnset. I was about 30 seconds away from saving the game and shutting off the game for this afternoon's session when Civ froze
3 hours of MMing down the drain

Handoff notes:

In my lost turn, I set up arty-and-cav stacks to take the last two Greek cities along the north coast for 1405AD; we could probably take both cities directly in 1400 if we send in the armies immediately (I sent most of the armies against Mycenae and some Indian towns).

There are two redlined Greek rifles who landed in the old Celtic core; I boneheadedly forgot to finish them off before hitting 'enter' for my lost turn. The next player may correct that mistake or leave it be (I let it be since I prefer not to reload in SGs).

Finally, I made some very good progress on our culture rate by carefully poprushing improvements at appropriate times. It's very time-consuming, but it really speeds up the build rate of Libs, Temples, Unis, and even Colosseums. Cathedrals still take a while, but they'll come along.

Finally...when the war winds down, I think we should build Markets, Banks, and Stock Exchanges in all of our core cities (I'm broadly defining that as Mecca in the west, anything south of the mountain range that separates our core from former Ottoman/Sumerian/Indian territory, and anything west of Michael von Biel). We should also emphasize working water tiles for our core coastal cities to boost commerce.

The save: http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/95212/CBob03_1395AD_Tusker.SAV

I need your list of composers, I have used up my list. I noticed you are going alphabetically, good idea. I see you had a computer glitch, man I hate those freeze-ups. Looks like an excellent and wearying turn-set!

Alright! Greeks and Japan have 4 cities left and India has 9. Greeks also have 1270+ in gold, so we need to focus on them first. They have three cities clustered together on the north coast and one more insulated by Incas. We'll need to use our ROP with Inca to rail to that last Greek city.

India and Japan are barely solvent; India has 9 gold and Japan has 1. Once Greece is gone we should be able to bulldozer over India and Japan.

Now if Overseer can remove these 3 pests with 17 cities in the next five turns that would be great; if not I'll handle the clean-up.

Culture
We bringing in a little more than 1000 culture points per turn. Anticipated victory is 1846 AD.

Governments
I'm open to using a 'odd' government.

Culturally Maxed Cities
The five culture builds are library, university, temple, cathedral and colossuem. We using '#' and '*' and 'x' in city names for different purposes; what if we used '@' to indicate that all possible, non-Wonder culture generating buildings had been built?

I would guess that the evaluation process involves only losing 1 citizen to the whip? I think @ is fine to put on culturally maxed cities, those cities can become sources of income as tax farms if they are low production and if they are high production, build multiplier buildings. I will download the save and get started soon, probably tonight. In fact, consider this my "got it" post.

For Konya, I put in that note because I wanted to take another close look at it on my turn 5. IIRC, I ended up rushing something there that turn.

In general, I was whipping Temples after one turn of build progress in size 6 cities; otherwise, I'd use Civil Engineers to make rapid progress towards a 20-shield mark (or close to it), then try to whip using fewer citizens. In practice, it worked out swimmingly well for everything except Cathedrals.

Oh, and I've been using http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:German_composers for composers :)

I have finally finished this turnset. The news is: No more Greeks, no more Indians, and no more Japanese:D We also have a dogpile opportunity as the Mongols and Dutch are at war. We could easily pick a side and set everyone else against them. Other stuff. Using the whip has a hidden side effect in that when the towns grows back it screws up the MM'ing of those towns. If I missed a few dozen, don't be surprised with so many to manage. Still lots of work for our workers and slaves to groom our territory. I think we need teams to chop forests as soon as the jungle is gone. Many towns could use the shields anyway, and even in productive areas the only tiles that should have forest are tundra. Here is my turn-log:

Wow. Greece, India and Japan are gone.

:goodjob:

(Oh, yeah, the fighting was fun while it lasted. :D )

I take a peek at the save via MapStat.
We have 251 cities. We are still at war with the Aztecs. Russia has +200 gold, Inca around 190; we need to find a way for that gold to become ours.

German culture is at 40,608; Aztecs are the second most cultured with 18,897. We are growing +1311 cpt; the Aztecs won't catch up.

We've got four resisting cities: Madras, Calcutta, Kolhapur and New Bangalore. They will probably starve.

A quick peek via CA II shows a culture win date of 1796 AD; 229 slaves; 165 workers.

Looks like a whole lot of smooth sailing.

I might be able to do a preflight tomorrow, but we have a wedding to attend in Dallas, so that might not happen. Saturday looks like a good day for Micro-Managing the fine German empire.

We make peace with the Aztecs after demanding their World Map and all their 48 gold.

Worker stuff. Nice and boring.
When not in Jungle clearing stacks, I've tried to keep our native German workers making railroads. As much as possible I will try to keep slaves making new roads and irrigating.

Some cities to watch for whipping (so I won't forget):
x Alesia (10) colosseum needs 43 turns, hire a hardhat for one turn, whip next turn.
x Edrine (12) cathedral in 140; rush market for 4 citizens, then rush cathedral for 3 citizens.
x Lugdunum (8) colosseum in 108, hire back 4 hardhats.
x Bombay (10) accidently rush the libarry for two citizens. I wanted to get it down to an even twenty shields before I got out the whip.
x Thermopylae (9) four hard hats this turn, pop rush the temple for 2 citizens next turn.
x Madras (10) needs 32 more shields for library, hire 3 hard hat this turn (7 shields), fire one next turn (5 shields) and rush the following turn.
x Kish (7) colosseum needs 112 shields; keep 1 hardhat, grow in 2, whip then, maybe.
x Richborough (10) colosseum needs 64, rehire 2 hardhats, grows in one, whip next turn.
x Corinth (10) library in 2 with 4 hardhats; really needs rails to grow faster. Whip something later.
x Izmit (6) university needs 83, keep 1 hardhat, try to whip next turn.
x Delphi (9) temple needs 40 sheilds for temple, whip it out.
x Verulamium (7) temple needs 36 shields, two citizens sacrificed for the temple.
x Erech (7) needs 101 sheilds for colosseum, fire the hardhats to get better growth, will whip next turn.

5 1450 AD

Workers and slaves.
Still forgot about the pollution, put 2 workers on it; finish in 3 turns. Sorry.

And the save is >>HERE<.

1450 AD Feudalism (1.9.0)
5066 gold, -29 gpt
Flight in 5 turns

We have 47872 in culture; adding 1578 in culture each turn.

CAII projects a culture win in 1770 AD, down from 1796 in 1425 AD.

Worker Things
I have only been moving workers and slaves. No military issues right now.

We have several stacks of slaves making mountain roads in our core area. I am not sure why we started this, but I did continue it. I think there are two reasons. One, to be able to snag aluminum and uranium when they appear. And two, to make pollution cleanup a little easier.

I have been using the stacks of workers and slaves to clear out un-roaded jungles. We have some roaded jungles; those are still jungles. Right now most of these stacks, nine of them, are between St. Regis and Akshak, close to Old India. Old India itself has a lot of jungle to clear, so we will need these stacks for a while. Three more are back to the west. All 12 stacks have enough units to clear a jungle tile and then road the grassland under it, all in one turn. So we average 6 tiles of jungle cleared each turn.

I also have two stacks of 7 slaves. They are designed to chop forests and then road that tile, but only out in the boonies. We haven't done a lot of chopping in the core and I don't want to start now. These stacks are for where we are pop-rushing.

There are several stacks of 4 slaves; their task is just to irrigate. There are a few stacks of 3 slaves and their task is to make roads on flatlands, generally plains and grass.

We have a lot 3 worker stacks; they just make railroads where others have already made a road.

Sadly, there a few fumble-fingered mistakes where single slaves/workers are doing a task that are best done in groups.

Whipping
Each turn I am scrolling through the cities, checking to see who can be pop-rushed or not. In a lot of cities we have civil engineers and it can be difficult to determine how many turns are left on a build when they are present. What has helped me in my decision making process was to change the hardhats to clowns. This changed how long it would take for the build to finish. And then I could decide on whipping or not.

As I did this, I started to fine-tune some of the cities. On the first turn, I would see that a city had needed 43 shields to complete their build and they started with 2 hardhats. If I changed both clowns back to hardhats, next turn the city would only need 38 shields, while 2 citizens are worth 40 shields. In cases like this, I changed one clown to a hardhat, which would only generate 3 shields next turn (1 from the city and 2 from the hardhat). The other clown I changed into a taxman, to get some extra cash. On the next turn, as I scrolled through the cities, I would see this taxman/hardhat combination and wonder why, check it, and then see that we could maximize our whipping that turn.

That sounds a bit complicated, and, well, it is. Plus, it only works if you are willing to visit each city each turn. That can take about half an hour in itself.

Settlers and Domination Limit
We have four settlers down by von Beecke that we can use if we need to. I am not sure we need to. We are getting rather close to a domination victory. We have 50% of the world's area and 63% of the world's population. Since we want to stay under the limits (66% world area/66% world population) I did not build any more cities.

So I am not sure what to do. We could abandon some of our outer cites or gift them to another civ. Not sure about that. Once we get our outer cities maxed out on culture, we may need to starve them down to size 1. I don't see a best way to handle this.

Military
We can support 1075 units; we have 363.

We are building Panzers in Handel.

Builds
Hoover Dam completes next turn in Richard Wagner.

In the core I have tried to focus on money making improvements; markets, banks and stock exchanges. Some of our core lacks the culture buildings that others have but that is okay for now. Let's get our money makers up and running to help us deal with the upkeep when we change governments. Outside of the core I focused on culture buildings.

Governments
This is how our current income status looks in Feudalism and Republic.

Feudalism vs. Republic, 1450 AD
1450_FeudalsimVsRepublic.jpg

We lose a little less in Republic; we also lose our ability to whip our citizens.

Overall
This was a much easier turnset to play than the last one. It still took a while, but I did not feel like each turn was taking forever. No warfare was a big help. Since I did visit each city each turn, that task added some time. It seemed it took about 15 minutes to go through the IBT, about 15 to 20 minutes on moving workers/slaves around, and then, of course, scrolling through all the cities. Long turns, yes, but not as burdensome as the last turnset.

As long as we don't capture any more territory, we should be fine. I wouldn't worry unless we are over 60% of the territory. We all have CA2, so it will warn us if theres any danger of winning by domination. It has to be both at the same time, and we'll have plenty of warning. Now it's just cruise control, trying to get the cultural VC as soon as possible. We will want to build the UN to prevent a diplo loss. I see smooth sailing ahead.

I've taken a look at the save. We can revolt and switch to Republic anytime; our current military can EASILY be supported by Republic's unit support, according to CA.

I'm going to get going in earnest tomorrow night or Wednesday night; I'm going to MM thoroughly to get culture buildings done in as short an amount of time as possible. I also plan to beeline for Miniaturization and build The Internet in RW; Research Labs everywhere will give us a major boost in culture.

Finally, I'd like to start some trade deals with some AI civs to augment our income. The longer we can delay Republic, the better - poprushing is really useful while we're still trying to keep research high.

I had forgotten about Research Labs giving culture. It has been a while since I played to get to Alpha Centauri.

RW is not our most productive city but I can't remember who is. Sorry. It might be better to start a palace prebuild somewhere else, depending on how long it takes to get the needed techs learned. That is, if we are 20 turns away from being able to build The Internet, start it in a city that will take 21 or 22 turns to build it.

Yeah, let's poprush as much as we can while we can. I don't know if we want to join workers to cities to help them poprush or not; I tend to think we want to get the jungles/marshes cleared before we started to break up those stacks.

A free 2 culture improvement in all cities would be a huge shot of culture. With 250 cities, that's an added 500cpt. We could finish this game in our lifetimes!:sarcasm: We are 2-3 techs from the Internet, depending on our freebie. There is also the possibility of gifting up the Russians to try and trade for their freebie.

Yeah, 500 cpt for an investment of a few hundred or even a thousand shields! The math works for me. Let's go for it.

But...
We just need to keep our population down, or let some other nation grow some, to avoid a Domination victory.

EDIT:
We could always whip workers/settlers, right? That would let us shift population around (the whipped would be added to cities where we could whip culture buildings) and reduce our overall numbers at the same time.

I spent about an hour tonight MMing. It's slow going since I'm cycling through cities, calculating calculating pop-rushing options, and marking which cities I need to review on which turn. I even found a couple of cities that I poprushed on the spot!

My technique is pretty aggressive: If a city needs 20, 40, 60, 80, or 100 shields and has enough population, I'll look for ways to rush or short-rush the current improvement. Beyond that, I optimize shield production to get to one of those key values and make a note to revisit that city on whichever turn it will reach one of those values. I'm also willing to pop-rush at 19, 39, etc. shields left - I'm concerned with getting more culture-producers up and running ASAP rather than getting the full 20 shields worth of every pop-rushed citizen.

Edit: We have no danger of a Domination victory. We could have 99% of the population occupying only 65% of the land, and we wouldn't win by Domination. We only need to make sure that our culture expansions don't push us up above 66% land area.

If we get the Internet, which I think we should, a lot of our border cities, which currently have no culture, will now have culture and will expand in 5 turns after we get the Internet. That could be devastating.

Having said that, I don't think that we'll go overnight from controlling 50% of the land area to 67% in one IBT.

Never mind. (:run: :crazyeye: :deadhorse: )
