I think it is more to do with fairness, to do -2 +1 you must somewhat put your pride on the line. to take your name off the list is to take all the benefits with none of the risk.

The way I see it, you're either playing or you're lurking: if you're playing then you get to -2 and +1; if you're lurking then you get to either -1 or +1. If you are playing and you die, you still get to -2 and +1 after death, but if you just stop playing completely then you become a lurker and can only -1 or +1.
