CT6 - Just another Emperor SG

Ahh, damn it... seems I saved the wordpad document over the save on accident. So I don't have mine, I'll try re-playing the exact way I did the last time.

How's that going, anyway? It's been a few days...

BTW, Chieftess, I'm starting to see what you mean :).

Forgot about it, I'll do it immediantly.

Save

Ok, everything played out as it suppose to, but two things:

1) The carthage have yet to settle on the old odense spot.

2) We got a Great Leader from the battle in odense. I tried to restart, and played the turns over again, with the game result. Tried a third time, and once again got a GL. So I decided to give up.

ok, DH is up.

Preturn: Palenque is about to riot; lux tax has to be increased to 40% if we want to keep the GLib build going. Copan will still riot; hire a scientest until we can get an MP unit over to it or get its pop down to a more resonable level by building a settler to set up a city on Odense Island. The capital is building a courthouse for some reason; I swap it to sword. As for a our leader, we should clearly build an army; either of swords or  Javelin Throwers. We will have to be careful when loading it with units; remember that galleys can only haul 2 units! I assume we are trying to avoid a despotism GA and that is why we have built no Javalin Throwers? Our treasury should be able to keep to sustain deficiet research long enough for us to get Republic, switch govs, and start a Golden Age. My goal for these turns is to invade Russia.

IBT: Despite my checking all the cities, Calakmul riots anyway, so I hire another scientest. Research time now down to 15 turns though. The Carthaginians have already landed a settler pair on the Odense Island

Turn 1: Blue-Quetzal-Macaw forms a (currently empty) army in our capital. Our southern-most galley is in Russia's territory and carrying wounded units. I unload it in Lazapa so we don't take a rep hit for declaring war while inside a civ's terriotry (Am I right about the AI viewing this kind of like a ROP exploit or did I just totally make it up?) The military advisor informs us that we our weak compared to the Russians, and I'm inclined to believe him. Cathy ran out of room to expand along time ago and has probably been sitting around building archers and spears for quite awhile by now.

IBT: Sure enough, the Carthaginians found Nora on Odense Island.

Turn 2: Copan builds settler, starts worker (it has ALOT of food for a desert city!). Losing a Scientest drops us back to 16 on republic research.

Turn 3: Nada. Byzantines now have monarchy. Chop-whip the temple in Lazapa.

IBT: Two of our cities riot. Having no luxuries is a serious problem <<stating the obvious>> I decide to call it a night, as I clearly cannot pay attention well enough. Will finish tommorrow. Fortunatly, Carthage and Scandanavia are now at war
:goodjob: as long as Carthage doesn't just crush the vikings and become even more powerful.

Turn 4: Carthage also has Monarchy now.

To be continued...

Turn 5: Not much happens. Whip the temple in Bomapak, costing two lives. It is unable to grow without more happiness.

Turn 6: Notice that we have a strong military compared to the Byzantines. Also notice that there is a different-colored border (looks grayish) pushing up against the Byz capital's cultural border. I'm guessing AI war(s) to the north.

IBT: More start the hanging gardens.

Turn 7: Not much. Start loading Vet swords into galleys.

Turn 8: Not much. I decide to leave the invasion up to the next leader; I recommend landing our troops in the forest so we can weather the intitial onslaught of Russian archers better.

Turn 9: Not much.

Turn 10: Not much. I will leave our invasion fleet with 2 mp left, outside of Russian waters, and in range of the forest square I propose we land our troops in. Next leader can prosecute the war as he/she feels fit. Mayan Madness

The Great Library will finish in appromitly ten turns, probably the same time we finish research on the Republic. Since we have contact with 2 civs that definitly have it, we should get Monarchy as soon as it activates. We can therefore choose either government when we revolt and not worry about the tech. The Byz. have currency, but we can almost certainly trade republic for it. Our lack of luxuries is a real pain; we will have to build more happiness buildings than normal and might even want to try and build Bach's or Sistine's, even if they are normally sub-par on a map like this.

DH, sounds like a plan. Getting the GL also means we can specialize down toward gunpowder and MT, which will be very useful for war against Carthage and Scandanavia. Let's hope we get some salt!

I'm not sure if I will have time tonight to play, but tomorow for sure.

Okay. Here goes nothing.

Preturn. Look around a bit. Err, our army has a single JT in it. Accidental? Either way, I will try to avoid a despotic GA, since we're not on continents and can't use it very effectively. I notice we're building 3 galleys, but only one sword. Seems a bit much, considering that all of the galleys will be empty soon... I switch Yaxchilan to a sword. I also note that Chichen needs another MP; it's currently got a warrior and a settler in it. Calakmul needs one too after the barracks. Not too bad though.

8 swordsmen ready to strike, with 2 more in a boat on the way. I think I will see what Russia has. But I'll wait a turn and see if that worker moves. If it doesn't, I'll take one of the squares next to him. The one SW looks good, because then the AI risks moving off the roads if they went a defense bonus. But first... Hi Cathy? Can I have Novgorod? It will really make the invasion easier. Oh, I can't? Well, I'll just have to take it when I crush your puny country. War!

IBT: Byzatines and Netherlands sign a peace treaty. A Russian Galley comes from the city south of our fleet.. The worker finishes choppy the trees... even better! I pick the spot SW of DH's chosen spot.

90 AD (1): Copan: Galley->Sword, Tikal: Sword->Sword. I note that Copan has a curragh sitting around. I'll use it to kill galleys if I can. Landing on Russia, I notice a stack of 3 vet archers, 1 reg archer, 3 vet spears, and 2 reg spears one square west of Russia. Silly Cathy, you can't defeat me with that! Also vet archer/reg spear pair NE of the unmarked city (St. Petersburg by the espionage screen). Okay, so maybe the war won't go so badly, then. 4 archers aren't going to do much damage versus swords in the trees. I decide against landing the other ship on the wheat square, because it's within range of the big stack, and will probably be vanquished.

IBT: Ugh, the moment I've been dreading. And it didn't go as well as I would have liked.
Super Elite wins without a scratch.
Super Elite dies without doing damage (weird).
Vet loses 2, wins
Vet loses 3, wins
Vet dies without damaging
Vet loses 2, wins.
Vet dies, redlines vet (it promotes to elite though...)
Vet wins without a scratch
vet dies, reg archer loses 2

So, right now our stack is 2/4, 3/4, 2/4, 1/4. We lost 4, but killed 5. Not terribly great. However, it appears that Catherine has a ton of spears... 10 visible outside, covering 5 archers. I think it would be a good idea to get our swords back to safety, heal them, and try for a better landing. There's no way our landing party, even with the two extra swords, is going to live without a base. Since we have enough galleys for now, I try to sink Russia's galley. It takes 2 damage, but our galley dies. I should be able to hit it with the Curragh next turn. Meanwhile, we still have two cities making galleys.

110 AD (2): Yax: Sword->Sword, Lagerto: Library->Barracks.

IBT: Err, okay, so the galley went the other way. I guess my attempt was in vain. Really, I was hoping to get it out of the way, and it got out of the way alright :).

130 AD (3): Not much... landed our swords on shore to heal.

150 AD (4): Tikal: Sword->Sword.

170 AD (5): Kamialjuyu: Worker->Catapult. Gonna need some of those.

IBT: A Russian Galley appears from the fog, but from the east. Oh please, let that be a lame invasion force :).

190 AD (6): Bonampak: Spear->Spear

All healed up... let's see if I can do better this time... send the galleys down south.

210 AD (7): Chichen: Library->Spear, Yax: Sword->Sword, Copan: Sword->Spear (needs a barracks here, also!). Use the sword as MP at Copan until the spear arrives, because it is a bit unhappy. Russian still won't talk, but I could care less :p. Lots of workers out right now, under spear cover. Republic in 3, thanks to the libraries. I switch the scientist in Calakmul to a taxman to help with the loses. Land the invasion force... this time, 2 swords. Let's hope luck is more on our side. Only 5 archers visible right now.

Our brave Curragh goes to kill a Russian galley... does one damage, but dies, and the galley promotes to elite :(.

IBT: And again, the part I hate.
Vet loses 3, wins
Vet hits for 2 and dies
Vet dies
Vet loses 3, wins
Vet dies, hits the an elite for -1
Vet loses 3, wins
Vet kills a warrior without a scratch.
Vet loses 1, promotes to elite
Elite wins
Elite loses 3 (down to 1!), but wins
Okay, so we lost 3 this time, but we killed much more.

Russian galleys on the move. Some Byzantine Dromons head south.

230 AD (8): Quir: Galley->Galley. Lazapa: Barracks->Spear. Yax riots. Doh, I got too caught up in the war. Make a taxman.

Even though there's only a few troops, our are injured pretty bad, so I have to retreat again. Cathy will talk, but we can't get anything out of her; she's got 0 gold, and nothing of value except cities, which she won't give up.

IBT: More Russian Galley and Byzantine Dromon movement.

250 AD (9): Not much.

IBT: More movement... the 3 Dromon stack is moving in "escort mode". Russia's going way up north. To attack us perhaps? Carthage asks for an alliance vs. the vikings/rop. I decline; this war is going to be hard enough!

260 AD (10): We learn Republic! Start on Currency, due in 20 (it's either that or Monarchy; both are known) Chichen: Spear->Sword, Tikal: Sword->Sword. Copan should probably make a galley after this spear; thus saving the time to make a barracks.

Move our wounded troops to Lazapa to heal; should be healed after next turn.

Summary: The invasion hasn't happened yet, but Russia appears to be weaker now, at least in offensive power. Though they still have a lot of spears. Riccett should be able to get something going on his turns, though perhaps waiting until a stronger force can be mustered. I'd hate to have to leave them alone until Feudalism; but that won't be far away with the Great Library, so maybe we can just tough it. And we can use the money from not spending on science to make a better army, of pikes/mdi/trebs. Pikes would help a lot here. Until then, make more spears. We can make them faster and they have to absorb a lot of attacks. I have two cities with a relatively low production working on some right now.

The Great Library is due in 2. The Byzantines have Currency and Monarchy, but not Republic. We can't trade for both. Might just be a good idea to learn Monarchy from the Great Lib anyway. Carthage also has both. The Vikings are down CoL and Lit, and Russia is still backwards as ever. Might be a good idea to turn science to 0 until the Great Library is built, as we can get both techs we can research for free, and maybe if we're lucky, a Middle Ages tech, too.

I wish I had more luck with battle, but unfortunately with such an even match (2 attack on 2.5 defense), it doesn't always go in your favor. I think we did okay, nonetheless. Currently have 10 swords, and more on the way. I'm starting to think that we should settle somewhere on Russia with our extra settler, then move in our troops that way. We can get fortify AND +10% grasslands bonus, and healing. Have to worry about flips though.

In any case, I'm going to try to attach the save with the attach file dialog. If it doesn't work, I'll just post it on the next post.

Yes, only 1 JT in an army because you can only fit 2 units on a galley. If we do use it, we'll have to assemble it on another island.

Ok, I'm up then.

Well, it's been over a week. I haven't really been reading the forums in general; just this thread. So I dunno if Chieftess is around. For those in the game that are reading this, what shall we do now?
