That reminds me of the statistics which show that couples who cohabitation before marriage tend to divorce more or at least sooner. A closer look actually shows that there is no difference in how long the relationships last if you measure from the time that cohabitation began instead of from when marriage vows became legally binding.

Of course, but every country had big problems throughout the 20th Century, including the US.

Argentina just couldn't cope with theirs, in huge part due to Peronism. I think a lot of the discussion there is misguided; some posters seem to think the problem was ISI wasn't taken far enough, while in reality the problem is they attempted ISI to begin with. A country with vast natural resources and a very low population density such as Argentina should embrace it's position as a commodity exporter, they were and could remain incredibly prosperous with that role - see Australia. Naturally some industry would develop around the main commodities, such as meat and minerals. Instead, they subsidized industries where they had no competitive advantage whatsoever, because Perón and co. believed that's what it takes to become a developed nation.

Argentina is rich by nature - it takes a big effort to keep them poor.
Ye-es… but it's not just that. It's the militarisation of Argentine society. A coup in 1930, several failed revolutions before that, etc. Anyone saying Perón was democratically elected is an idiot, as Perón was part of the 1943 coup that tried to legitimise themselves with his electoral triumph (he named military officers for civil administration posts whenever he could, and kept their budget inordinately high). It's not quite in the nature of the Argentines to be democratic, as they've always had elected monarchs.

Of course, the few times that there's been an alternative to Peronism, it has been torpedoed, in 1963 and 1966 by US pressure, in 1989 and 2001 by Peronism, and so on. The Radicals haven't had a President finish his term in office since the 1920s.

That's Arkansas. IIRC.

Not sure what the headline is referring to but the thought of trying to survive in old age on under $7k is scary.

comparison of contemporary income of Swedes with the commoner surname Anderson and Swedes with a noble surname, indicating social status of ancestors 300 years ago. there is quite a bit of persistance.

Why do people who make $78k get 18% of their earnings via social security?

Or am I reading that wrong?

I'm also curious how someone who makes $6k a year is able to use his/her assets to make a regular income.

This is a retirement income graph.

It's the mean, not the lower limit. Being the mean, it'll also be higher than the average of that group.
