Wow, and i thought trains were the most fuel efficient way of transport. (or was this just for shipping cargo ?)

Yeah if you check out that table for trains, the MJ per passenger km measurement varies substantially between countries. Amtrak comes out very badly.

It's probably a combination of lower patronage, older stock, running on diesel rather than electricity, and lower average speeds with more speed changes?

I'm shocked by this. I wouldn't have thought air travel could hold a candle to anything on the ground. I might have to dive into this data, it flies in the face of what I know.

The problem with planes is not so much that they burn excessive amounts of fuel per passenger mile (unless used for short range hops), but that they produde simply a lot of passenger miles.

One intercontinental return passage is comfortably accomplished on a single weekend, but will burn as much fuel per passenger as the average car in a whole year (ballpark).

Oh, I thought Arizona was larger.

Alcohol is bad, but doesn't scratch the surface of say, LSD.
Your opinion on this particular matter is entirely uninformed, unaffected by scientific evidence and/or personal experience, right?

I never would have guessed that if I didn't check the numbers myself! Also, the UK is roughly the size of Arizona :wow:

I knew the second one. It's just always oversized on Civ maps.

But you can see why you're a bit beholden to travel light when you fly. Like, even losing bodyfat is a significant factor.

Returns for Investors at Unprecedented Lows

might tie in with Bob Gordon's views: http://johnhcochrane.blogspot.nl/2012/08/gordon-on-growth.html

or in some contrived way with peak oil. which in turn could be consistent with Bob Gordon's work.

or is it more of a local, national phenomenon? you'd think a difference in returns between countries' asset markets would get arbitraged away over time.
