I thought in Murica you can pay less than the minimum wag as long as tips cover the rest? Maybe only in some states.

I did some research into this before my backpacking tour of California about 6 years ago now.

Apparently employers in most (all?) states have a legal obligation to "top up" their employees if they don't get enough in tips, so that they get paid at least minimum wage. However, a lot of employers will just not do that and will fire you if you complain (using a made up reason), and there isn't much the employee can do about it. So most people just suck it up and "try harder" next month. The status quo seems to be "You're not pulling in enough tips so obviously you suck at your job, so suck it up or look for a new job"

Comment on the data: Who would have bet in 2015 that the best relatively performing tobacco product would be pipe tobacco (it is the only one going up '15 > '16, hipsters?)

Comment on the graph: Does it convey any information having the / / 100% when none of the bars go that high? Could it not just go up to 30?

I would assume that just means that all values are below 30%, so they didn't bother to include that part of the graph. But they didn't want to equally space the graph 0-100% because the information is presented in clearer format by doing it the way that they did.

Pipe tobacco hand rolls well as a halfish and halfish with cigarette tobacco. If you're going to smoke smoke sometimes, and vape/chew other times because you aren't super into cigarettes, it comes in a pleasing variety of flavors.

But maybe just hipsters. Most of the older (now) guys I know who actually used the pipes have quit.

Hookah is more hipster than pipe :)

Oh heavens yes, but requires so much more stuff! You can't pull off the "grounds crew hipster" routine by pulling a hookah out of your pocket at lunch. You pull out a pipe and load it or whip out papers and hand roll - even rednecks look at you and go, "Oldschool. Hey, that actually smells kinda nice."

Various factions in the Syrian (civil?) war, from CNN:

Fairly certain Israel isn't all that involved

and the fallout between Saudiarabia and Quatar is a farily recent devolpment no?

If you take as Israel the stance that anything that happens in the area could influence the security of Israel......

For example just this very recent news after the Qatar isolation
"Take note," a senior Israeli security official told Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity. "Just this week, the United States attacked a convoy of Syrian forces in that sensitive region. It happened at the exact same time as events were unfolding in the Persian Gulf, when the Sunni states broke diplomatic relations with Qatar. This was the second American attack in that same region in the past two weeks. It is a much more dramatic move than it seems from the outside, yet it is passing beneath the radar. It represents a full-force change in US policy in the Middle East."

Israel caring about the war doesn't mean they explicitly support or attack any part, at least not on a large scale

Would be interesting to have data for Kosovo.

It's a bit baffling that only the Czech Republic has their country's native tongue as that country's most popular second language. Essentially, in nearly every country of the EU, if you don't speak your country's language as your native tongue, you're more likely to speak English than you are the local language??
