DMAW04 - A Testing War

Lurker's comment: Looking good so far, the aggressive moves you are making are excellent. "Pillaging to death" is the main threat in AW games, but with a sizeable home military you'll be fine.

I wonder what would happen if you tried to make a colony in an Always War game in BtS :p (I bet you would immediately end up in war with them)
Almost right, the colony declares on your enemies first.
I don't know if the colony can make peace. I didn't test that.

Sorry about the delay, folks. I'll try to play the turns tonight. I'm up in a couple of other games, as well. So it may be tomorrow night. But I'll try to get them done tonight.

I started us off by whipping both Aachen and Pasargadae back to pop 1. Ouch. I then started both cities on Granaries for a bit more efficiency with the whip. Since Zara has another Horse Archer heading our way, I decided to train another Spearman in Persepolis.

I then sent our forces towards Beijing. We've got 5 Axemen and 3 Immortals facing 3 promoted, Protective Archers. Will it be enough? Our first Axeman had 15% odds. And for a moment, it looked like he might actually win. But alas, it was not to be. Our second Axeman did not do as well. I then decided to promote one of our Immortals with Flanking. He did withdraw, but sadly he did not even scratch the Archer. Back to the Axeman, I suicide another of our CRII Axemen. After that, it was just a mop up operation. I assumed that we wanted to keep the city ...

And the Chinese are no more.

After Persepolis finished its Spearman, I put it back on Axeman duty. Since I lost most of them in China, they will need to be replaced.

Next up is Ethiopia. Thank goodness he isn't Protective. :crazyeye: He seems to have quite a few Horse Archers. I also got a look at a couple of Axemen, as well. We should be able to pillage his ponies, but we will need to wait for an Axeman to escort our pillagers.

We also lost a forest on my watch. I didn't have enough cash (10 gold) to save it.

We've now got 108 gold in the bank, thanks to our friend Qin. Research is at 90% and we are running -10gpt at the moment. Mathematics is showing in 9 turns.

Oh, a couple of things I forgot to mention. I think the save got upgraded to 3.03 somewhere along the way. I kept getting a Windows runtime error anytime I tried to access the event log. Can someone else who is running 3.02 confirm that? I wouldn't mind knowing if the problem is with the save or my machine. :undecide:

Also, I never did get around to building that Settler that Ozbenno suggested. It would probably be a good idea, once we've got a couple more Axemen trained. I'm thinking red dot would be the place to put it.

We are expanding way too fast ... need to set up a few cottages in some lands.
You may be right about us expanding too quickly. I was hesitant about keeping Beijing because of how far away it was from our Capital. But being in a corner like that, plus with those floodplains, it just seemed too good of a site not to keep.

We've got a couple or three cottages laid down in Pasargadae. But unfortunately, it is too small to work them yet. A few more cottages in the capital, as Ozbenno suggested, would probably be good. And a city at red dot would provide a buffer should a strong pillaging force arrive.

After Construction, we should probably research Currency for the extra trade routes. Until then, we will need to finance research by razing cities and pillaging the countryside. Be careful with Zara, though. He seems to have a pretty diversified set of troops, and a good number of Horse Archers.

OK, I'm back in the loop.

Beijing was definately a keeper, should pay for itself. Agree with more cottages and Currency.

One more city to provide a buffer against Zara would be good. We should try and get a couple of Immortls out to scout for more opponents and pillage Zara's resources. I would raze his cities if we have an opportunity but pillaging would be better until we stabilise our finances more.

In this turn set I was mainly moving troops and building cottages. I killed one sword and took no loses. I was hoping to pillage the horses at Gondar, but once I had troops in place Zara had done the same, probably planning to attack us again.

I think that pillaging is too risky, and that we need to play defence for a while. I'm building a settler which I think should build a city at the red spot (see below), and that we keep the bulk of the army there.

Our core cities will then be safe, and can concentrate on development. The economy will hurt for a while, but we are working many cottages and once they mature we will be fine.

During my set, Gondar was being defended by that lone Archer, when I first stepped atop that hill. Then during the IBT, half the units you see in the above screenshot appeared. The rest have shown up since I played my turns. Zara is definitely building troops.

I think it is critical that we do some pillaging. At least get the ponies pillaged, to stop his HA production. If we would feel more comfortable adding another axe and spear to our stack, that would be fine. But we need to advance. We will lose the terrain advantage (on the pony tile), but our early GG gives us the promotion advantage. And hopefully Zara will take the opportunity to suicide a few units onto our stack.
