The old one is all I've used since I've been here (except for the avy switch). No, this is just to see if it reminds people to check IaLS
I've always thought it would be good if we got some sort of notification when someone posted in a Social Group - is there a way to set this up?
What I do is click on the "My Account" link at the top of the page and check the social groups for new posts. You can also within the threads in the social group, just like the threads in the regular forum, check under "Discussion Tools" the option for Subscribe. And then you can set up your subscriptions to notify you in a couple of different ways. But that is a thread by thread tool, not a group tool. I also bookmark in my browser the IaLS main page, and so open that when opening CFC.
So what am I?

Maybe if they just let us choose our own avatar from the start like most forums 
The problem with that is that we'd probably get a wave of pronographic (remember that horse-porn epidemic last year?), advertising or generally inappropriate avatars.

I'm a moderator for a fairly large forum with games that I would consider more popular than Civ and we've never had that issue. I wonder why it's an issue here.

At the forum I moderate, about a quarter of the spambots have avatars. Kind of random ones, but not rule-breaking.
Some have, believe me.
Some even send friendship requests ^^.
But this thread is about avatars, not bots.
If you change avatars, then it should be at least a similar one, so that it's easy recognizable. Unless it's too similar to another user...okay, this is probably too complicated

I've changed my avatar quite markedly over the time I've been here, but I think I've had the same user-text the entire time.
