IMHO There are many good uses of violence in movies, and many bad ones. I like
Joking over-the-top violence, like in the Monty Python's Holy Grail Duel Scene with the Black Knight, or in comedy-splatter movies like Braindead, which I unironically like more than LOTR
Slasher violence like in Scream, Black Christmas (1974), Hitchcock's Psycho and Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Artful violence, as in Takashi Miikes movies like Audition (1999) or some of the Italo Horrors (especially Suspiria)
Sometimes graphic violence can be okay, like in The House that Jack built or Dogville, though these kinda make me sick
And lastly I also really enjoy action violence or a good fight, especially nicely choreographed ones like in the John Woo movies
The only kind of violence I really hate is torture porn like SAW and its ilk. They're pretty much universally trite and extremely hard to watch.
War is a difficult subject, I personally feel like unless a movie is trying very hard to be historic or is extremely sensible about its subject like Apocalypse Now, it often feels like a glorification, of war, irrespective of who the "good guy" is.
I dont mean snuff films, Im talking about your average, run of the mill, slice em and dice em slasher flick. That genre seems to exist for the large number of people out there who are so desensitized to violence, that they need to see people terrorized first, and then chopped up with butcher knives, in order to have a good time.
You know, violent films
can be fun. The director of Lord of the Rings did two, in fact, as did Spielberg, everything from cartoon violence to horror/splatter.
Personally, I'd recommend Sam Raimis Army of Darkness
