Fall From Heaven NES

From the Khazad Senate
to would-be Patrians Mithril Guards

Corrupt Patrian merchants have forced us to retreat under the crust of Erebus in the past, before Patrians started fighting each other. We are not going to let this happen again. Patria nostalgists are not welcome in Khazad, but those who seek refuge from them are. No Mithril guard attempt to subvert free nations will be allowed.

We warn you that any foreign party trying to impose their will over our friends the Hippus, or any other nation, shall face the might of Khazad.

Kylorin was the king of Patria. In fact, it could be said that Kylorin was Patria. After ending the Age of Winter, he chose not to come back. He saw his mistakes and did his best to undo them. Creating a single, centralised empire, was one of them and he chose not to repeat it. If Kylorin had wanted Patria to exist anew, noone would have resisted him. But the thaw-giver saw that would have been unwise. Those who pretend to create a new Patria are not respecting Kylorin's legacy and haven't learned anything from history. Patria is long-dead, and shall remain that way.

To the Lanun
From the Amurites

What official and public stance do you take in regards to the recent events in Hippus lands and the murder of Brennan? What is your view of the neo-Patrians?
What claim, if any, do you make upon Hippus lands and throne?

OOC: To be fair, I was paid to transport those orcs (as written in my story). Besides, those poor guys need someone to look after them...

Also, weren't the orcs supposed to go to Faenig Isle, Jopa?

To the Lanun
From the disintegrating nation of the Amurites

We asked to sail through your waters and you said, "No: we don't trust your ships so close to our lands. We are sure you would feel the same with your lands." And here you are using the seas adjacent to our lands to launch military activity. And using orc mercernaries no less. this is disgusting. Your hypocrisy disgusts us.

IC:

From the pen of High Captain Karimir;

To the "disintegrating nation of the Amurites":

You speak many brave words, and cry of hypocrasy, but in that same communication you misquote I was assured that you had no plans of empire, especially within the Lanun sphere of influence. Recent actions show your own hypocrasy. As for your questioning of the orcish evacuation, that is a different matter. I sent no armies to your lands, I recieved a just payment, which gave me reason to act, and the Lanun hold lands in the south that justify my interference there. Read the letter again, and you shall see I violated none of the precepts I defined.

Be warned. The Lanun shall not allow this farce of "Patria" to continue long, since it both threatens our interests and the interests of our allies. The ruthless assassination of our ally, Brandon the Great (as I'm sure he shall become known), was a grave offense, and the offender shall be taken to cause - but he would not be dead had the Mithril Guard called their crusade to rejuevate a well-dead land. The Lanun, and myself in person, will do whatever needs to be done to avenge this ill deed.

Our priests call you an open worshipper of Mammon, a apostate of Tali. We caution them to hold thier tongues but when you, suddenly and without warning us in any way, ship violent orc (albeit refugees) to our lands for the sake of a little coin, we must ask ourselves if there is any truth to what they say.

I'm sure that your future correspondance will put all our minds at ease and dispel any fears they may have.

Please, for the sake of peace and the continued goodwill between our nations, let us work together to find a solution and a home to the orcs you shipped into our lands.

EDIT: fixed spelling (freudian slip?) regarding Mammon- sorry to all the LDSs

This farce is an outrage! How dare you claim to be the heirs to Patria!? Surely you know that Kylorin was a Vampire? Aeron's Archangel of Mind, brother to Alexis and Flauros the traitor?

We are the heirs of Patria!

Few notes to explain situation in foreign lands:

Kuriotate Regency Council rules from Naggarond, rather than from traditional capital Kwythelhelar. Kwythelhelar was pretty much pillaged, and still is not restored, so Naggarond was bigger, and councilors liked it for it's strategic position. So if you for some reason need Kuriotate capital, it's Naggarond for undefined time period, not Kwythelhelar.

Brandon was, and still is, highly respected. He was always ahead of it's time for tribal nation like Hippus, he was highly supporting modernization, and his Kuriotate wars gave him even more insights. When presented with Patrian idea, he quickly adopted it. His flaw was that Hippus are much more sensitive to their culture and traditions than most other nations (and to tell truth, their culture is more different from Patrian than Amurite or Kuriotate is) so the idea never got really accepted. BUT, there was also a chance that assassination attempt would fail, in that case Hippus cities would become Patrian cities..

Previously we said,

A message to the nations of Erebus from the Council of Seven

For too long the corruption and short-sighted greed that prevailed amognst individual members of the Amurite senate has plagued the decision-making apparatus and the foreign policies of the Amurite nation. Those days are over.

The Amurite nation will now begin a period of inward reflection. It is our goal to 'clean house' before we return to the world stage.

[snip]

We have also thought long and hard about the affront to our faith and our church that was instigated by foreign governments amongst the loyal and trusting dwarven population that has long lived amongst us. At first our council chambers heard voices of rightious (and strictly speaking, appropriately molified) anger. We thought to conduct an investigation into the affair and to seek vengeance upon the purpurtrators. But we thought about this further and we realize that perhaps the senate did not always act with responsibility and wisdom upon the world stage, that perhaps their actions have led to emnity with other nations. And so, we will take no action in respones to these 'attacks' upon our people. Instead we will 'clean house'. But, realize this: continued attacks of an indirect nature, and particularly attacks upon our faith or its reputation will not be endured any further. We wish renewed peace and trust with the nations of erebus; we hope other nations feel the same way.

And so, we raise a glass to peace, to new and to old friends, and perhaps, if we are not too optimistic, to hope.

The Coucil of Seven

to The Lanun and the World

Once again we are being goaded by foreign forces. This time the culprit is obvious. It is the same one who smuggled goods into all our nation costing all our economies various amounts of gold. It is the same one who when confronted in regards to these acts blatantly lied about it. It is the one whom signed an agreement to embargo the calabim with us and received the isle of Rinwel in payment and then turned around the next turn and began trading with the Calabim without returning their payment. It is the same one who has turned this same island off our shores into a haven for smugglers and servants of Mammon. It is the same nation who says time and time again: ‘beware the amurites- they have grown too large’. And yet look now, which nation commands the most widespread lands, the largest economy. The lanun sought to scare their brother nations into joining with them and managed to create strong alliances but in the meantime it is they who have become the world’s dominant power.

Recently, the besieged orcs of R'Rgorac were unceremoniously dumped into the province of Ciriail by Lanun sailors. No warning was provided to the people of the Amurite nation. If it had been provided, we could have at least tried to find a solution that would be suitable for all; but alas, no warning was provided. To some, this invasion would be an act of war. When questioned regarding motives, the answer is that the acts were performed for the money. Again and again the answer to questions regarding Lanun behaviour is that ‘its not personal- we are doing it for the money’. While this may explain the behaviour, it does not condone it. Its merely an admission to the world of the status of the Lanun elite as servants of Mammon.
This had grown their purse and their power but it provides little comfort the citizens of Ciriail who’s hearts go out to the homeless orcish exiles but who, at the same time, can’t help but fear for their lives, their livelihood and their lands.

But the Amurite nation has promised to turn inward, to cease meddling in the affairs of other nations.
. .. .. .. .. . . .. .. .. .. . . .. .. .. .. .…And we meant it. Especially now that we are facing civil disobedience and the threat of civil war, the Amurite nation cannot afford to have to turn its attentions to outside aggressors.

We will not be prodded into violent action. We seek only to live in peace; to stabilize our desperate internal situation.

Once we were friends. For the sake of this distant friendship, take your prodding and shadowy underhanded activities elsewhere.

We will continue to turn the other cheek to these blatant attempts at prodding us into violent confrontation. We have seen the fruits of meddling in the internal affairs of others and it is not something we wish to taste again. With time the world will weary of your sabotage and indirect attacks.

Pssh. This doesn't deserve a reply, since the misdirections, half-truths, and outright lies are evident. You make many claims as to my villainy, but provide no proof for most of them. For those that you do, you ignore the rightful justification and cause behind those actions, and many of them are far from the atrocities you attempt to portray them as.

Your claims of strength are equally ill-founded. The Lanun are strong, yes; but we are far from the giant empire you declare us, and there are others equally strong. Furthermore, we have not attempted, as you have, to declare a supreme position - this farce you claim as Patria.

You also ignore the many harmful actions of your own nation, many of which have ill consequences far beyond any mistakes the Lanun may have committed. Your mages have blocked the world of helpful magics; your invasion of the Calabim was the fruit of betrayal; your past is strewn with demon creations and questionable behavior.

My actions on behalf of R'Rgorac were made after due consideration, and I bear no regret. You make a weak attempt to claim a solution could be found by negotiation, but I heard nothing of any such thing at the time. It is an empty promise, made worse by the fact that it is made well after the deed was done. They deserved help and offered pay, and thus, something was done - and none who follow the Lanun code could take offense to that.

As for your claim to cease meddling, that is yet to be determined. You actions of late seem to disprove it. Whichever it may be, truth or falsehood, I shall continue to act in the best interests of the Lanun and their allies, most notably the Hippus.

Yet, buried within your twisted and misleading message lies a kernel of truth. The Amurites and the Lanun were friends, once. There is also the opportunity for our peoples to be friends again, but not until the Amurite nation changes it's philosophy and methodology. The Lanun, and me personally, do not desire war. We do not shrink from it, though, so be well warned. You sail at the brink of the falls, and a change in wind might take you over them.

Excellent. Let our actions be our voices and let no more be said of this until then.

I promised a third story earlier, and here it is.

(Well, actually, this is a fourth story, and the third one became a backstory to this one. Someday in the future I'll put the other one up too, as part of a massive release of the secret files. But not today.)

Centaurs don’t make good sailors.

It’s rather obvious, when you think about it. They require more than two times as much food than a man, they take up three times as much space, their digestion takes longer and is more sensitive to motion, and, finally, they have hooves, and decks are slippery. However, those same reasons apply to horses, except more so – they eat more and leave the decks covered in excrement. Thus, to the practical mindset of the Lanun, the best cavalry were centaur cavalry.

Perhaps that’s not completely true. The best cavalry would be gagged centaur cavalry, which would eliminate the constant complaining. The Sea of Tywer was probably the easiest sailing on Erebus, but the centaurs made it sound worse than Danalin’s Tears during storm season, when waves reached higher than the crow’s nest.

There are exceptions to every rule, though, and the current exception was standing at the prow of the ship Bloodsgale. His name was Karl, and he was the leader of the less-than-merry band of four-footed warriors. His feet were confidently planted at the very tip of the ship, and his hands were casually held behind his torso instead of clutching the rail. He looked downright happy, which made him unpopular among his men (or, rather, centaurs)..

There were two men flanking him. To the left was a grizzled Captain, scarred from many battles. He wore a beaten cap over graying hair, a weatherworn blue coat over an equally worn shirt, and an patch over a long-lost eye. On his shoulders were the mithril swords that denoted an Admiral of the Lanun navy. To the right of Karl was a man who almost defied description, not because he was unique but because he was common to the point of invisibility. He was average height, middle aged, dark haired, fair in appearance, and wore a demure black cloak that covered the rest of his clothing. The admiral’s name was Hardskull, and the other man’s name was Applesbey.

“We’re ‘bout to sight land, Herdsman.” Hardskull was saying. “We’ll have t’round Spew Point, but in t’ree hours we’ll be in Kin’sport.

Karl didn’t understand a word of Admiral Hardskull’s thickly accented speech, but it didn’t bother him. He simply looked at the other man, Applesby.

“The good Admiral said that we’re three hours out, Karl.” Applesby tossed his hood over his head to block the strengthening wind. “Normally, you and your men would receive a grand welcome but since Hardskull and his men return in victory, your arrival may get lost in the wash, as it were.”

Karl didn’t especially care how his troops would be regarded among these people. Not so long ago, he had been fighting them with sword and hoof. No, this whole endeavor was solely for the purpose of saving what remnant of his people he could. With the fall of Cardith Lorda, the lands that had once been Kuriotate were now embroiled in civil war and destruction. The only lands that remained peaceful had been his people's, and when they found out those lands were Lanun he had nearly lost hope. He had expected they would leave, doomed to death in the wastelands that had once been his country. This… diplomat? Priest? Advisor? … of High Captain Karimir had persuaded him to stay, to serve, and to save his people. Karl no longer had doubts about his decision, but neither was he grateful for ithe opportunity. As the Lanun would say, “any port in a storm”.

Despite that, Karl was starting to feel that Lanun had a sort of rogue charm that grew on a person. They were often aggressive, very uncultured, and downright barbarian at times. However, they were loyal to the point of insanity, skilled at their chosen profession, and friendly once the swords were sheathed. Plus, they were good drinkers, and for many centaurs that would be enough to gain their pledge. Karl would never love his new nation, but he accepted it and its people as well as any.

Do you have to have played a NES before to join? Because I read this thread today and it seems very interesting.

Well not really, since I never played or hosted one before, and here I am. But you need to read the rules, get a grasp, and need to know the FfH lore...

This was my first NES too.
