So our first formal debate is basically in the books now, with mixed results. There seems to be some confusion about the suggested topics/lack of interest, and the threads got a little confusing. To simply things, here is another thread.

If you have a topic suggestion, please make it. Please be as specific as possible...posts that say ERMEHGERD NO US THREADS or MAYBE SOMETHING SOMETHING EU? are not helpful.

If you would like to sign up for a topic, please say so (and which side you would like to argue) in bold. That way, I can adjust the OP.

Many felt the rules were too complicated for this debate. I happen to agree. However, agreeing to any kind of rules for anything at this place is impossible, it'll balloon to 6 pages, and I won't be able to follow it. Rules are to be agreed upon by the debaters, and posted in their debate thread OP. If you want to do that via posts, PM, Fiftychat, smoke signals, whatever, it's up to you, so long as everybody agrees. If you and your debate partner need help with rules, or want a suggestion, PM me.

I'll be watching this thread throughout the day, and will adjust this OP as people sign up for topics. Should anybody suggest an education or sports related thread and need a debate partner, ping me and I'll be happy to do it.

READY? GO!

Possible debate topics SO FAR:

The future of nuclear energy?

Should Tertiary education (university) be free? Random says no quakers says yes

Salary caps in professional sports leagues are a good/bad idea? (Verdade says yes, downtown says no)

Does the international community/the peoples of the world have a moral responsibility to act and interfere when a country is in civil war? Ghostwriter says no

Does science support genesis? Bezerker says yes, Global Skeptic says no

Topic suggestion: Are small sovereign countries viable in the present world?--innonimatu YES

Why not have debate teams instead of one on one?

Either there would be co-ordinated teams (that is, they chat amongst themselves and write out their whole post in private), which wouldn't really do much for the debate other than increasing the time investment of everyone involved. Or there are non-co-ordinated teams, which will make a mess.

This might bite me in the ass as I continue to apply to colleges, but I'd be willing to argue that tertiary education shouldn't be free.

Yes, it does have to do with the EU. I wonder if Winner will bite?

Ooooh, I'd watch that one!

Ideas:

Education (sorta): Should teachers be trained and armed?
Sports: Should FIFA institute goal line technology?

I would be interested in taking the good position on the salary cap issue.

i back this one. should higher education be subsidised?

Cool. I'll debate you on that. I'll send you a rules proposal later today.

I've updated the OP. Debate participants should work out their rules amongst themselves. Please PM me when you've done that, and I'll get the mod approval and get your threads going.

And who will moderate the debate?
