GR28 - AWM vs 30 civs, Pangea

Thanks for posting those "zone"pictures instead conquered cities pictures. They are much more educational to us who are still learning.

We're not exactly making a lot of commerce right now, so the bonus from the marketplaces will be disappointing at best. That doesn't mean that little bit won't make a difference though. At 100 % tax, we're only earning 17 gpt due to the unit support. That might be different though, after cities can grow past size 6. But by then, we're probably needing libraries already. I do think the benefit from marketplaces isn't that small, just because we're stretched for cash as it is.

If we keep up the current pace with building units from slowly growing towns and slowly settling extra towns, CommandoBob will run into a deficit, even at 100 % tax. In such a situation, I think marketplaces could be warranted. Because the extra commerce can be used later for rushing and running deficit research.

I think concentrating on the definitely useful aqueducts makes the most sense. We can hold off on the library/markets for now because we need size 7 to become Monarchy which we want to do as soon as possible.

However, if theology completes then i would start some libraries. Monotheism is out there so it could happen at any time.

I'm going to be travelling for the next three weeks or so, so I won't be able to play again until around March 5.

Good luck. The next two or three rounds should clarify whether this game can be won.

Lots of headaches, with the ZUlus coming down the mountain range and aiming for Ta-Tu and Karakorum and just now shifting back west. Celts attacked a bit, mostly with Horses. We've managed to ping them, but not much else. Spain is showing up but hasn't done anything. One Arab warrior is just in the way of his allies.

In the north east, Naw, Mongo Straight saw no action. The same was also true for Tabriz and Ulaanbaatar.

I would like to send Second Army to Erdenet to stop the Celts, but that leaves Ta-Tu a bit exposed.

Sixth and Seventh Armies, combined with the artillery in Ellipi and Dalandzadgad, cleared out the Sumerian Swords and Enkidu Warriors that were sneaking up on us through the hill north of Ellipi. Putting Seventh Army on the hill 1W of Dalandzadgad was a great help in taking out the Sumerians. Lately they have shifted their attacks eastward, coming in around Atlay. Many of Dalandzadgad's cats and trebs have moved to Atlay.

We a settler 3NW of Dalandzadgad, ready to build a city. That city will not be connected but it will extend and expand our borders out to Nineveh.

In the south, the Dutch are trying to pound on Banana Bob's Chutney. We have 9 catapults in the city, but they didn't do too well this last turn, hitting only four times. Fourth Sword could attack, but at 11/17 it is a bit weak to attack Swords in jungle across a river.

Our two new towns were built here, Taggart and Lili Von Shtupp.

Persia has concentrated on Baruun-Urt and would probably have taken the town except for the rushed walls. Persia mananged to pillage the roads around Baruun-Urt and cut off our source of Spices. Taggart and Lili will allow us to reinforce these towns much easier than before. We are currently roading the hill 1W of Lili with two Workers. We have a settler with the workers; the settler is earmarked 1SW of that tile, on a hill overlooking marshes and a cow.

Persia's attack routes have been mostly just due east towards Baruun-Urt. Mainly Horses, but some Archers are starting to show up.

We got five slaves when we razed Pasargadae and we sent them back home unescorted. So far Persia has ignored them.

We have two slaves with our healing Armies in the field. These Armies are unmoved and we might be able to dance those two slaves back to our borders also.

Sidon is unprotected and unmolesetd. The Ottomans could target Sidon, but we cannot tell right now.

Most of our workers are rather close to each other, so I captured as many of them as I could.

We have 6 Workers clearing a roaded jungle tile between Kazan and Jungley Swamps; they finish in three turns. Jungley Swamps and Choybalsan have been too active for workers to be safe, but this tile is not on the front lines.

We have 5 slaves clearing the jungle tile 1NE of Mongo Like Candy. Four more slaves have been moving in that direction. It takes 48 slave turns to clear one jungle tile, so 9 slaves doing that work is no faster than 8 slaves. We can find work for one slave, I'm sure.

The mountain roaders have two more turns to go. The hill roaders just moved onto the hill this turn.

We have a single worker roading at Atlay.

And we have an unmoved worker at Ulaan. This one could mine the grass but I didn't want to tie it for the next six turns when other work might be needed.

Other Stuff
We learned Fedalism, Theology and Invention.

We met the Ottomans, which helped us get smarter. We have seen only one Ottoman unit and it is dead.

No wonders were built but Sistine Chapel and Sun Tzu's Art of War have been started.

We razed Pasargadae and Istakhr of Persia, netting 7 slaves and zero gold.

Taggart and Lili Von Shtupp replaced those cities.

Otherwise, Too Many Cities.

Jungley Swamps got hit with disease and dropped to size 2.

Several units have not been moved; some I have mentioned earlier:
  • Second Army (14/18) near Karakorum.
  • Fourth Army (11/17) near Banana Bob's.
  • Third Army (14/19) and Fifth Army (14/17) near the Persian border.
  • (All these Armies I had planned to let heal this IBT.)
  • Two slaves are with the Third Army. I was waiting for Persian units to move away and then try to sneak them back to our lines.
  • Worker 1SE of Ulaan. Could mine this tile. Or not.
  • Settler in Hovd.

Spices are unconnected.

Ta-tu's aqueduct will complete this IBT. Dalandzadgad is also building an aqueduct, now that that area has quieted down. No libraries are being built and no other aqueducts.

Two Maces finish this turn; first Pikes are three turns away.

We have 27 cities. We need one more city to support another Army.

Thirteen elite victories produced one leader (Kublai), who rushed an aqueduct in Kazan.

great job holding out. Fantastic kill ratio.

However, we only make 6gpt at this point doing nil research? Incredible. Never seen anything like this. I think we can forget about revolting at this point in time. But with chivalry, our UU will come. Do we want a despotic GA?

I got it but will wait for some input first.

"Defang" is especially good. :hatsoff: Fine play, too.

I'm afraid I don't have time for a full consideration of the position--my plane leaves in twelve hours--but I don't see any prospect for a revolt to monarchy during Rat's round. So, since we'll have to use our Keshiks as soon as we get them, we'll probably have to accept a despotic GA.

Karakorum should switch its settler build to a combat unit, so that it can get onto a pattern of building settlers as it hits size seven.

NP, you have fun at your trip and enjoy your holidays.

I will heed the advice

Note that for gold we will lose only a little with a despotic GA as most tiles only earn 1 gold, so its not that bad if it occurs. I wouldn't worry about starting it.

I am thinking we need to start infrastructure. Our low gold shows we have a lot of units and will have to pause anyway or run into negative gold. Getting more cities so razing the enemy cities seems a priority. Its really tough because we need both a lot of workers and have a long front line, so many units are needed.

It looks like we need Aqueducts as top priority, then libraries and markets. With those we should be able to go for Monarchy.

Some exiting moments, great job man. :)

The Sumerian threat seems to have died down a bit now that they're moving away from the hills. The Celts are starting to become very dangerous however. If it weren't for that forest, I think we would have been overrun already.
The Zulu continue to be a nuisance with their Impi's, I can't wait until we have Keshiks. That stretch of mountain will be great to pick off all the troups coming from the north.
We'll have to wait and see what the Ottomans are going to bring. We probably need an army at Baruun, since it's so hard to reinforce.

Until we get Keshiks, use all our MGL's to rush aquaducts?

One thing struck me as amusing. The fact that most of our opponents are still using ancient age units is probably making it harder for us. They're less dangerous, but whether a unit is a swordsman or a medieval infantry, it still takes an army one attack to finish them. And they can make four swordsmen for every three medieval infantries.

That's quite true. It's often a relief when our enemies get to knights and we face fewer, more expensive units.

I have played quite a few turns already. We gained another army, have 30 cities, but pressure is mounting from the north. I had to repell an attack of 20+ Spanish units. And now others come in force too.
To top it all, we met Carthage

Will finish this on Saturday I think.

Good work. :goodjob: We're playing well, but we may be acquiring new enemies too quickly.

Good work. :goodjob: We're playing well, but we may be acquiring new enemies too quickly.

And too many with AA UU's. Those Numidian Mercs are no fun at all. And we might see Swiss Mercs from the Dutch.

Depending on how this turns out, maybe we should have set the AI agressiveness higher.

Pre-Turn
smite 2 Celtic units, 3 Zulu units and a Persian horse
move armies forward towards Persia, expose workers as bait
MM a little and go for min research on chivalry

IT one Celtic horse dies

3. 680AD
4 Sumerians bite the dust, same routine and 4 Dutch go down the drain

we need to expand south as well sooner or later

take out 2 Persians and capture Tyre, we got 2 catapults and 4 slaves there with us now [79-3]

The situation in the east
gr28700.jpg

IT nail biting stuff, first we repel a Sumerian attack, then retreat a Celtic horse and then go for the showdown
Spanish lose 13 units, and we have two redlined but surviving armies  unfortunately they won't heal til next turn [93-3]

6. 710AD
1 celtic horse dies, take out 6 Sumer units , lose three maces (a healthy mace against a red horse amongst them)
defeat 3 Dutch units , defeat 2 Spanish units [105-6]

IT defeat 7 ottoman horses at Tyre and defeat 2 Spanish [112-6]

7. 720AD
4 Dutch out, 2 Celts, 5 Spanish and 4 Sumerian units and 1 Persian unit
defeat 1 spear in Ergili [127-6]
abandon Tyre and found a replacement

IT defeat 2 units on defense, Arabs show up in bigger numbers [129-6]

8. 730AD
defeat 1 Arab, 1 Sumerian, 3 Dutch, 1 Zulu, 1 Celt, 1 Arab, 1 Spanish, lose one sword
take out 2 spears and autoraze Ergili [140-7]

IT a lot of units coming closer to us from the north, all nations
Persia attacks and loses 3 horses [143-7]

9. 740AD
found replacement for Ergili
defeat 3 Spanish in the east, 2 Dutch while we lose an archer there
one Zulu and 2 Persian units die, armies in Persia heal
1 Sumerian, 3 Arabs and 3 Celtic units are killed [158-8]

IT Zulus shift their units eastwards, defeat 3 units on defense[161-8]

10. 750AD
defeat 3 Dutch, 2 Celts, 3 Spanish
2 armies in the east heal so that we can continue to expand there soon
take out 5 more Arab swords, but lose one myself, defeat 2 Persians[176-9]

In the west, we do have 2 armies that are healed on of them covers 5 slaves and 3 catapults
We have to decide whether we slowly head back with them. I think we need those units urgently

The situation:
East.
The situation is now under control, Spain's initial stack has been destroyed. Unit come from there + the Zulus, but should be alright. Celts can be controlled so far as their units pose no issues, they do not seem to have iron. We do have a settler there to expand north. Do not be scared of the desert to expand, we need to anyway.

gr28750a.jpg

Central:
Trickier, as there are many points to attack and Sumer, Arabs, Zulus change directions as they see fit.
gr28750b.jpg

West:
Persia has taken a beating and a mere 7 cities left. We have two armies to continue to dent them. They also lack iron. Unfortunately, Ottoman are coming and they will come in numbers, so we need to shift stuff west. We have a settler available where we cleared marshes. In my mind, we should abandon Nineveh as it only take up units and we can't prevent enemy units from pillaging. We need a clear front that we can defend easily by shifting units around.

Good luck to the next player, you need it

Tremendous play. Starting a min run on Chivalry was good thinking.

We'll have to disband the five slaves and three catapults beneath our westernmost army, since we can't spare an army to escort them to our lines. To stop taking enemy cities here would be a concession of defeat.

We have the option of founding junk cities on the jungle coast south of Taggart. They'd be fairly safe and wouldn't change the corruption rank of useful cities, unlike desert towns in the north.

Edit: If we want a cultural building in Erdenet we should take the extra turns to build a library; a temple is pointless.
