GR29 - AWM vs 30 civs, Pangea

For the next player:

- I did not do any MMing in the cities at the end of turn 10!!

- The two armies next to Satsuma migh better heal for one turn before attacking. The town is extremely attractive to every civ and they throw against it whatever they have. I leaned that the hard way.

- In about two turns a transpersian railway should be set up.

- There are three armies ready to attack Tula (Aztec) next turn.

- In the west there is the highest potential to get MGLs, as there are many crap units running around.

Plans
Persepolis is not railed.

Pasadena eastwards to Ura Tube is railed. In the west, Wormwood to King of the Road to Fried Bread is railed, and there are several snippets of rail connecting two or three towns together.

Making rails is an obvious priority and railing east to west (front lines to front lines) is what we need to do first and then improve the core.

Satsuma
Spoiler :

1445_Satsuma.jpg

Satsuma (1) will be captured one more time and then it will stay ours. Maybe. We have two Cavalry Armies to capture it, but will need Muskets and Pikes to keep it. The Armies can deny some of the surrounding high ground (1 mountain and 3 hills) to the AI and provide some counterattacks. Satsuma is ten tiles NE of the East Wall and 5 SE of Kyoto, Japan. Japan has double our culture, so we also have a flip risk with this city. JS Bach's Cathedral is a very nice wonder for us, but I think to capture it and keep it while not advancing our front lines in the east is going to be very difficult.

Instead of trying to capture Satsuma, I think we should focus instead on razing AI cities in the area, like Uruk (12) and Kyoto (12) and try to keep Satsuma isolated from the rest of Babylon. Japan has a lot of gold, over 11,000 pieces of the stuff, that could help our cash flow. Babylon is just a pest and is broke, too. Both of them have 11 cities.

Silks are near Kyoto, just waiting for us.

Other Stuff
In the West we just keep moving on northwards. We can get one of Korea's two cities, the other looks like it is on an island. Otherwise, Aztecs will be the main target, since they are all we see.

After Industrialization, Electricity (leading directly to Replaceable Parts, which means Infantry and Artillery) looks better than Medicine.

plan sounds good. Especially leaving Satsuma alone, we won't be able to hold it

Getting rails and additional cavalry armies will start allowing us to make real progress in the west. With the nearby choke, it may be possible to keep cities by cutting roads and blocking the remaining with armies so that cavalry can't get to the cities.

At that point we can keep cities which is very good for us because they become science farms much faster - they are already big and already have aquaducts.

In general flips aren't a problem if we don't have units in them, so if you can capture them and deny access to them, then if one flips, it can be taken back pretty easily.

So I would keep them when you can and raze them if keeping them slows you down too much.

I still haven't found my disk. I went through most of the other games, but still didn't locate it (fortunately, I haven't used my much larger collection of older games so it can't be there). It is likely someplace it shouldn't be.

Two more turns to go; will finish Friday evening/night.

Hire a geek in Shiraz to keep it from rioting; in turn that means it will decrease to size 8. Swap a few other citizens around but not much to be done. As rails become more common more tile swapping will need to be done when MMing the cities each turn.

Ninth Army got pounded by at leas 4 Indian and 5 Japanese frigates down to 5/17. A Jap Calvary is now adjacent to the Army but did not attack. Ninth Army is in no-mans-land, so moving it will be easy. Juggling the line will be the issue.

Now that the rails are in place, start looking for targets.

In the west, Seoul has the only barracks near the front line. Per Map Stat, Seoul needs a maximum of 4 units to prevent it from flipping; currently 8 are in the city. If we have an Army here each turn, along with a garrison unit, flipping should not be a problem.

Four eCav wins look nice, but gain us nothing (128 of 141, 0 of 25e).

We find a Viking Musket-Settler pair the Grassland Gap between Seoul and Tula (129 of 142).

In the East Twentieth (16/18) topples over three of Babylon's finest, leaving the city of Babylon defended by a Longbow (132 of 145).

Twenty-Third pillages four flood plains, to further isolate Ashur; finds Eridu and Babylonian Iron.

Back in the West, Immortal Pipsqueaks and First Immortal dislodge Celt Pike and Spear in a mountain (134 of 147).

Thirtieth (8/17) goes to Seoul to heal. Twenty-Nineth (11/17) and Twenty-Fifth (11/17) heal in the mountains; Twenty-Sixth (10/18) on some grassland.

I keep our Armies in place in the mountains instead of forming an interior West Wall. We are almost past this mountain range and no need to fight over through here a second time.

Going back to the East, send Twenty-Eighth to the attack the city of Babylon from the south; the Longbowman did not stand a chance (135 of 148).

We rescue 2 Viking slaves from Babylon and then burn the city; it had no gold.

Set Taumin to starve down from size 8.

Dancing Queen, Knowing Me, Knowing You, Take a Chance on Me, Mamma Mia, Lay All Your Love on Me, Super Trouper, I Have a Dream and The Winner Takes It All are all geek breeding grounds between Seoul and Tula.
[IBT]
The rerailed plains tile 1SW of Boston gets cratered by India. Then they focus on Bunyan, dropping it down a size to 6. Stalled gets hit twice.

Chalcedon market -> factory in 20 (zero growth).

11 1500 AD

Around the Empire
Greek Sword at Teayo; Greek Settler outside Teayo.
Two Aztecs Cavalry aiming at Teayo.
Two Japanese Cavalry in the coastal Path of Doom.

Three eCavs exterminate a Greek Sword and two Aztec Cavalry (138 of 151).
Third victory promotes eCav to *CavalryOne_1500AD* and Darius (1 of 28e).
Darius is born in a swamp, just dandy. However, rails are nearby, so Darius goes to Pasadena and froms Thirty-First Cavalry Army.

:woohoo:

Fourth eCav win promotes, too; *CavalryTwo_1500AD* and Cyrus(139 of 152, 2 of 29e).
Thirty-Second Cavalry Army is made.

Fivth eCav win promotes also! *CavalryThree_1500AD* and Achaemenes (140 of 153, 3 of 30e).
Thirty-Third Cavalry Army is made.

We have one more eCav, but no more easy (redlined) targets.

We grab the Greek settler.

Thirtieth heals in Seoul.
Twenieth (14/18) heals on a former hill of Babylon.
Twenty-Third pillages a flood plain and then a mountain, before moving onto Babylon's Iron.

In a last act of futility, we ping the seven Indian Frigates 1N of Bunyan.

And the save is attached.

In Prefreneces, turn off Animiate our Manual Moves, Animate our Automatic Moves and Animate Enemy Moves.

Played an extra turn to end at 1500 AD.

Coastal Path of Doom 1500 AD
Spoiler :

1500_East.jpg

The four red dots are what I called The Coastal Path of Doom. This was created after a few rounds of heavy bombardment by Indian and Japanese Frigates.

The bait is New Persepolis, an undefended interior city. To reach their target, enemy units have to end their turn in one of the four red dots. And when they do, we'll throw rocks until they are redlined and then go leader hunting with our Elite units.

It has been a popular place to die.
:trouble:

Out West 1500 AD
Spoiler :

1500_West.jpg

This has been an interesting spot.

We have moved beyond most of the mountains in the area and on next turn we could claime even more.

The dark blue line is the choke point that we could have garrissoned. I didn't see that until we had advanced past it and then I saw no reason to give up the land we had gained.

The two red dots near Teayo are the killing zones of Teayo. Cavalry from inside Aztecdom can't get any closer to Teayo than the red dots.

Not visible in this image is the city Atzcapotzalco (12). The Aztec capital of Tenochititian was found this turn.

We have rails to our cities, but not much beyond that.

MGLs
We had horrible, ugly results on the first ten turns. The last turn, 1500 AD, we got 3 MGLs, in three back-to-back-to-back attacks. The three new armies, Thirty-First, Thirty-Second and Thirty-Third, are parked outside Pasadena. We have 19 vCavs to fill them and more on the way. One Army is active. The other two are fortified.

Also, I have gotten in the habit of parking unites near the capital. Now that we have rails I play a bit differently. During the turn, I try to wait until all the newly produced units are activated and rail them to the capital. Once that is done I have a better idea of what forces are available to use on that turn. It makes the turn longer, but makes planning easier.

East or West
With three full, fresh armies available next turn, or perhaps even this turn, the question is where to use them. In the east our line is strong and we have a way to entice the AIs to come to us and die. Out west the land is starting to open up and becoming broader and needs more armies to present a solid front line. However, Japan is in the east, 11 cities and 9500 gold. We need that gold to help us research.

I think the best use of these three armies is to concentrate solely on sacking Japanese cities. Twentieth Army could join them, too.

Other Stuff

Lisbon and Screwtape are netting 1 shield per turn but are building courthouses. That seems wrong, but maybe I've missed something.

Four factories are in production: Persepolis in 2, Pasadena in 3, Mr. Peppermint in 6 and Chalcedon in 20.

Two Muskets are ordered; Pee-wee's Playhouse and Horse Town have the honors.

Three warriors are being built in small, isolated tundra cities. The warriors then serve as MPs in the larger cities; not bad duty for a country hick unit. One of these three, Herat, has a nearby rail line. The last two are in the far south; we have a slave stack raling to them, one tile per turn.

The only other units we are making are settlers, foreign workers, cannons and cavalry. All the cavalry cities are railed.

Most of our slaves are in stacks of 12 for easy, one turn railing. Our three native workers I grouped together and set them on railing mountains, 4 turns per mountain. We don't have that many mountains that we work. In addition, one stack of 12 slaves is also railing a mountain; I couldn't bring myself to stick 36 slaves to that task.

At Boston the slave stack got split into two groups after the last bombardment; 6 rebuilt the road and the other six are now railing.

We built two Muskets last turn; they went to serve, I hope, as frigate targets in later turns.

Twenty-Third Cavalry is on top of Babylon's Iron, ready to pillage next turn.

We met the Arabs. They declared war on us before we DoWed on them.

We have a Silks, our sixth native luxury, located in Tamuin.

Electricity in 11 turns; -76 gpt, 2682 gold.

good progress...

so who is up next?

I don't have much to say when I can't look at the saves, but some brilliant progress recently. :hatsoff:

As Greebley seems out of action I will take the next set after M60A3TTS

This looks like our roster at the moment:

CommandoBob: just played
M60A3TTS: got it
ThERat: on deck
Calis: pinch hitter, might be back (fishing trip unitl 8/15)
Greebley: injured reserve
Northern Pike: out until 8/25

Some further good progress. Wish I could load the game and look at it.

It looks like if you cut some roads on the west front you don't need a complete wall in the west. This would free up some of the armies to go on the attack. Opening up the east once the west is done will be interesting. There could be some big stacks.

Also, thanks to M60A3TTS and Calis for helping out when we are short on players.

I started by taking an inventory of our armies

Interior Army (4)
2 cav
1 unloaded
1 cav healing in Seoul

Eastern Front Armies (14)
23d cav scouting
4 immortal
6 knight
3 cav

Western Front Armies (11)
5 cav
3 knight
3 immortal

29 accounted for
1 unaccounted for

All Armies by type
13 cav
9 knight
7 immortal
1 unknown

1500AD

My initial plan is to break the two fronts into four groups and move against the Japanese and Babylonians each with a group and the Aztecs with two.
The first move is on the Eastern Front, heading to Edo.

3 Bab muskets killed at Uruk
19th & 32d cavalry armies take Uruk
13th Knight Army kills Ancient Cav

Celt knight shelled and killed by ecav (5-0)

IBT
4 Japanese cav are killed attacking armies at Uruk (9-0)

The AI chooses to have a beach party
Celts land 2 MI at New Hamadan
Aztecs land 3 cav there
Dutch land knight there.

1505AD
There is something of a deficiency in artillery. Since we have Leo's Workshop in Seoul, it makes sense to upgrade 14 trebs to cannon

At Uruk
Cannons redline Indian cav. Kill 4 w/ single cav, no promotions
Kill Jap rifle and Indian musket w/cav, no promotions

32nd Cav kills rifle and cav at Nagoya. City falls and get 436 gold if my math is right. Sell market and harbor and abandon. I have the no-raze patch installed which makes the game more of a challenge for me. No free mass AI workers.

4th Immortal Army kills Indian cav
At Edo 28. Cav Army kills rifle, 31. Cav Army does same. 24. Cav Army kills rifle and takes city for 711 gold. Sell rax and harbor and abandon.

The move north
Spoiler :
GR-2815053rdArmyGroup.jpg

Kill 2 Celts at New Hamadan, no promotions
Kill Dutch rifle there, no promotion
Lose 4hp ecav against redlined Aztec cav. Meh. Kill all 3 defenders
Immortal army kills Greek settler pair that was put ashore west of Tula

In domestic matters, railroads created much excess food on plains tiles. Pasadena as the #2 prod city and presumably ToE pre-build site needed mines. Workers do so and bump pre-factory output to 33 uncorrupt shields.

Back to battle, in the east
21. Cav Army kills 2 rifles at Tokyo
30. Cav Army kills rifle at Tokyo
City falls for 730 gold. Sell rax and market for gold and abandon.

Out west, kill 4 Aztec muskets with 25. Cav Army and 29. Cav Army. 16. Knight Army takes capital Tenochtitlan. Sell rax and abandon city. Pillage surrounding roads.

15. Knight Army kill 2 Aztec cav west of Teayo
1. Immortal Army kills 3hp Celt pike
6. Immortal Army kills another Celt pike
Immortal pipsqueaks kill another Celt pike

Back over to the east
11. Knight Army kills 2 Indian cav by Uruk
33. Cav Army kills another by Nagoya
13. Knight Army kills Japanese rifle
11. Knight does same. (44-1)

Sell rax and granary in Uruk and raze/replace.

IBT - Quiet, nothing significant to report

1510AD

It is said no plan survives contact with the enemy, and mine is no exception. Looking over how the terrain fans out on both fronts, it is clear that the advance will eventually slow to a crawl, even with 30 armies.

"Strike hard and quickly, and don't disperse your forces" - General Heinz Guderian

I scrap my original plan to divide the forces and concentrate in one area. The logical decision is to follow the money. Japan has it and we want it. All of it. The trick here is often a tech leader that gets whittled away will fall behind in techs. That AI will then transfer its funds to another AI tech leader to buy something, in this case Russia, before we can cash in. In this case then, time is money, so we will attempt to waste neither.

The Western Front is stripped of several armies to support our Japanese offensive. What remains in the west will perform delaying actions, nibbling here and there as the AI advances.

To battle in the east-
19, 20, 30 Cav Armies kill rifle in Kyoto
32. Cav Army finishes off last rifle in Kyoto and collect 795 gold. Improvements sold and city is razed.
10, 11,14 Knight Armies each kill Babylonian musket in Ashur
15. Knight Army kills reg Babylonian musket and Ashur falls. City has no improvements and is razed.
Kill 3 Indian cav, Viking AC, no promo
Kill Swiss Guard on the beach by New Hamadan, no promo
Upgrade 5 trebs to cannon
Upgrade 6 cats to cannon

In the west-
Redline 3 Celt pikes and 3 knights vicinity of Teayo and kill all 6. No promo (61-1)

IBT- Lose spear to Bab knight. Spear was in a fortress on a hill. Bab knight promotes to elite. Japan pilfers 2 Japanese slaves. (61-2)

1515AD

Fighting has intensified, with rewards aplenty-:)
19, 32 cav army attack rifles at Yokohama. City falls with 575 gold. Ancient Chinese units are coming in at that vicinity.
28,31 cav army attack rifles at Kagoshima. City falls with 623 gold.
Rail up to Kagoshima
20,30 cav army attack rifles at Nara. City falls with 685 gold.

Other Eastern Front activity-
Kill 2 Indian cav with 2 of our own and finally promote one elite
Kill 3 Japanese rifles with 3 cav, 2 elite and get another elite promotion
Kill Indian rifle with elite cav
Indian and Japanese cav killed by our own, no promo
Kill 2 more Japanese rifle with cav, capture one worker, no promo
33. Cav Army kill 3 damaged Indian rifles
13. Knight and 18. Mixed Armies kill 5 more damaged Indian rifles
9. Knight Army kills Indian rifle
10. Knight Army kills 2 Indian cav
5. Immortal Army kill 2 Indian cav

12. Knight Army kills Bab knight and LB
7. Immortal Army kills Indian settler pair

5 Chinese swords and a spear killed at Yokohama (102-3)

1520AD

Ecav kills India cav at Kagoshima

Another red Indian rifle wiped out by vet cav
Ecav kills redlined Indian cav

Send out cav and cav army from Yokohama that kill Japanese cav and Chinese MI
3 Indian rifles are eliminated at Chittagong by 19 and 26 cav armies. City falls.
Lose an e*Immortal clean against Chinese spear, kill clean with cav
Market, bank and harbor are sold, Chittagong abandoned. On the coast, 2 tiles to the southwest are 7 damaged Indian frigates that won’t be making port in Chittagong.

Back west-
2 Celt pikes are eliminated at Teayo
16. Knight and 25 Cav armies kill Incan and Celt knight along with Aztec cav in the west

Get Too Many Cities message in settling eastern lands, so disband a couple Abba Tune towns

Nara is abandoned primarily due to flip risk

IBT- No losses. Dutch land 3 units by village of Printemps. Other assorted AI forces moving in on both fronts. (136-9)

Mongol spear and Greek hoplite knocked off by Immortal armies out west

With units and workers scattered every which way, it’s time to call up the reserves!
Warriors stack up in defense of the worker teams, so the next IBT may cause the numbers to skew a bit. In any case, we don’t need MPs really, with all the luxes available.

On the IBT, attacks hit New Behistun with Ansar warriors and Indian cavalry.
Losses are a musket, and 2 cav I think, one musket remains at the end.
