GR29 - AWM vs 30 civs, Pangea

I'll get a strategy post up soon, hopefully later tonight.

@Greebley: If you get your game disk before I get that post done, chime in and feel free to take a swap.

Plans
Literature -> Construction (?), if we get that lucky.

Would like to build around the capital; maybe we can scare off the Korean and Byzantine. Or make them die somehow. May need to garrison that line of hills, but not right away.

Two workers and five slaves. One worker is ready to connect our hoped for new city on the coast south of the capital. The other is making a road 1S of Sidon. Three slaves are roading 2S of Shiraz. Last two slaves are out in the wilderness, guarded by a redlined Immortal.

Would like to connect the Ivory patch with the rest of us. Then bring some irrigation out that direction too.

Gems are to the northeast, between Seattle and Chicago.

Once the Ivory patch is connected, send Immortals and Spears to find the last three Ottoman cities.

I hadn't noticed that we're only average relative to the Koreans. That's a bit unpleasant.

After Literature we'll turn off research until we complete the GLib.

That's our future backup iron between Seattle and Chicago, not gems. ;)

We'd rather head for enemy cities we can see than cast about blindly, so the Portuguese city whose borders are visible would be an acceptable target too. The minor flip risk in cities with just one Ottoman citizen needn't dictate our strategy...though I'm probably tempting fate by saying that.

Basically that all sounds fine.

[IBT]
Quick move on.

Persepolis vImmortal -> settler in 4.

1 0530 BC

Around the Empire
Only Persian inside Persian borders.

Byzantium is very nice and opens up the city site 2S-1SW of the capital. However, three Korean units (2 rSwords, 1 rArcher) adjacent to that spot complicate matters. On this turn, cannot both move onto the city site and try to connect it. Two Spear and 2 Immortals claim the city site while the worker moves 1E onto the sugar. Except that the worker started on the road last turn. Move Spear from Pasadena and Immortal on the sugar to protect the now exposed worker.

Redlined Immortal and the two slaves move 1E towards Tyre. eSpear and 3/4 Immortal follow one tile behind.

Three slaves move through Phantanium to try to connect the Ivory Patch.

Worker 1S of Sidon moves 1S and irrigates.

New Immortal goes to Pasadena.

Wake warrior in Pasadena; goes to protect the worker. Pasadena still productive.

[IBT]
Korean Sword and Archer attack at our worker; both die. Other Korean Sword prevails over one Spear at the new city site (2 of 3).

Shiraz vImmortal -> vImmortal in 6.

2 0510 BC

Around the Empire
No incursions, but several border sniffers.

Mr. Peppermint is founded, grabbing a Byzantium Spear, a wounded Korean Sword and a healthy Korean Warrior inside its borders. Mr. Peppermint was a local children's TV show in the Dallas area when I was a kid. It begins building Walls.

Both Korean units are clobbered (4 of 5). Only Byzantium Spears might attack our exposed Immortal.

Redlined Immortal is back inside our borders.

Slaves move onto empty plain to begin roading next turn.

Protected worker now moves 2E, to road a more direct route to Phantanium from Pasadena.

New Immortal in Shiraz moves 1S as American units seem to eye Bactra.

Immortal in Pasadena moves onto the hill 1NE of Mr. Peppermint, so the Byzantine Spear does not move there.
[IBT]
Portugal dares to bother us. Away with thee.

3 0490 BC

Around the Empire
Byzantine Spear 1N of Tyre. One Amerian Archer 1NE of Bactra. Two Portugese Archers 1E of Ayden.

Raise luxury to 20% since Persepolis now size 7.

Exposed Immortal moves into Mr. Peppermint, releasing the other Immortal to strike the Byzantine Spear and become Elite (5 of 6).
Hilltop Immortal into Mr. Peppermint.
Wake Immortal near Aydin, who pounces on a Portugese Archer (6 of 7).

Immortal into Bactra, fortify.
Redlined Immortal into Tyre, along with two slaves.

Woker roads 1NW of Phantanium.
Slaves begin to road.
[IBT]

4 0470 BC

Around the Empire

Byzantine Spear makes our Immortal Elite (7 of 8).
Wake 2 Immortals (elite and vetran) and move them into Bactra. Both attack succeed on the three Archer stack, but no promotions (9 of 10).

eImmortal 1N of Tyre moves towards Aydin.

Redlined Immortal, now in Tyre, moves into Pasadena for quick healing.
Slaves in Tyre move onto the hill 1NE of Mr. Peppermint, to road to Persepolis.
We irrigate 1S of Sidon.
[IBT]
Persepolis settler -> vImmoratal in 4.
Arbela vImmortal -> vImmortal in 5.

5 0450 BC

Around the Empire
Both American Archers are now 1SE of Bactra; two Portugese Archers 1E of Aydin.

One American Archer is overcome at Bactra (10 of 11).
One Portugese Arcer is no more at Aydin (11 of 12).

Ivory Patch connected and so are Aydin and Istanbul. Short cut to Phantanium is completed also.

Science back to 90%, luxury down to 10%; Literature in 9; Palace in Pasadena in 10; -6 gpt, 305 in gold.

vImmortal to Tyre, as Korean units are nearby.

Worker moves 2S of Phantanium, to road. eImmortal moves to protect.
Crippled Immortal heals.
Slaves start to road the hill 1NE of Mr. Peppermint, 6 turns.
Slaves in the Ivory move 1W, irrigate, 3 turns.

eImmortal triumphs over Archer at Bactra, but stays elite (12 of 13).
Another Portugese Archer disappears at Aydin (13 of 14).

Tyre has 4 defenders, eSpear, vSpear and 2 vImmortals. We'll let Korea attack.

Worker roads in no-mans-land, two turns.

Settler arrives in Phantanium, along with 2 Immortals.
[IBT]
Three invaders attack; two of them attack no more (15 of 17).

Phantanium vImmortal -> vImmortal in 15.

7 0410 BC

Korean Archer turns into kimchee at Tyre (16 of 18).
American Warrior eats dirt at Bactra (17 of 19).
Lone Portugese Archer at Aydin, wih no reinforcements in sight, is hacked down (18 of 20).

Send vImmortal at Aydin (we have three) to Istanbul, as American and Ottoman forces, one each, converge on that city and its single defender.

Settler and one Immortal move 2S of Phantanium.
One other Immortal in Phantanium moves towards Aydin, the other one stays in place for crowd control.
Worker irrigates 1SW of Sidon.
[IBT]
Istanbul walls -> barracks in 20.
Shiraz vImmortal -> vSpear in 4.

Worker moves 1NW, to road.
[IBT]
Ottoman Archer dies to an Immortal outside Istanbul (20 of 22).

Persepolis vImmortal -> Settler in 4.
Adyin walls -> barracks in 20.

9 0370 BC

Around the Empire
Korean Spear 1SW of Mr. Peppermint. American Spear 1NW of Bactra.

Icky Twerp is built 2S-1SW of Phantanium. Icky Twerp was another local children's TV show host in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Icky Twerp starts on Walls.

A Byzantine Sword is 1W of Icky Twerp, but behind it are 2 Bzyantine Swords, so we leave it alone.
Ottoman Acher is 1SE of the city, but we ignore it for now, too.

An Immortal from Istanbul manhandles that Ottoman Archer (21 of 23).

Korean Spear has a Sword nearby, so we let it stay next to Mr. Peppermint.
We'll let the American Spear get out of the forest before we attack it.

New Immortal to Pasadena.

Worker and slaves road two differnt tiles, two turns each, to connect Icky Twerp to Tyre.

[IBT]
Byzantine Sword foolishly attacks Icky Twerp and dies (22 of 24).

And the save is attached.

Our empire has a nice, boxy shape!

Persian Empire 0350 BC

350BC_Persia.jpg

Nothing very exciting happened this turnset. We built two cites and lost two units.

The Shiraz-Sidon area has been devoid of conflict and the roads have been irrigated. The worker is unmoved; I wasn't sure what his best task was. I think it is time to consider mining the hills, but we may need more plains tiles irrigated.

We have three roads that complete this IBT; they are mark on the screen shot. Of the three, only one has a 'designated' next task and that is the slaves on the hill 1NE of Mr. Peppermint. Their next planned task is to road to Persepolis, which will make Persepolis and Mr. Peppermint just one turn apart.

The American units gathered around Bacta, but have pulled away in the last few turns. I think they are heading for Phantanium. That is why there are Immortals outside that city; they came from Bactra.

The Byzantine Sword at Tyre may head for the slaves.

Korea and Byzantium are producing Swords.

Bactra and Shiraz are training Spears for city defense.

Mr. Peppermint started on Walls but the action has been rather light. I expectd a lot of Korean attention, but it has not been as bad as I feared. A change to barracks might be in order.

Persepolis can build a worker this turn and still stay at size 6, if desired.

Literature in 4, Palace in Pasadena in 5.

Three Elites victories, but no MGLs.

good progress

Question is whether are we trying to aim for SoZ, we can always try for that and then use it for HE (in case we ever get an army) in case SoZ falls.

Second questions is, Greebley, are you able to play or shall I take over?

Nice expansion. :goodjob: We badly need our first Leader, but otherwise things look good.

About the Statue, I'd say that

1. With Arbela pre-building as well as Pasadena, our production of Immortals would become very slow when we need to return to the attack, and

2. By now, either we have all the ivory on the map, in which case we can build the Statue at our leisure, or we don't, in which case we aren't likely to win a race starting this late. So I wouldn't start another pre-build until Pasadena builds the GLib.

Presumably we should attack the Byz swordsman next to Tyre before hitting Enter. Perhaps the idea was to let the elite spearman get a defensive win, but as the town lacks walls the swordsman's chances would be too good in that attack.

Icky Twerp? Dallas in your generation must have produced some really disturbed children.

Icky Twerp? Dallas in your generation must have produced some really disturbed children.
Yes, it did! But only some of us became Civilization Players.

Oh, what a great name.

Icky Twerp.

:salute:

Makes CommandoBob seem rather bland.

:D

We have more than enough Immortals in the Phantanium-IW-Aydin-Istanbul quadrangle, so we should muster a strike force from them and send it against the Ottoman city to the SE as soon as possible. I'd suggest six Immortals covered by an elite spearman. Whichever elite spearman we choose to send will be a fair distance off, so it should get moving before we hit Enter (which may require some unit swapping to keep cities content).

Greebley, actually today is a very convenient day for me to play. If there is no news, I grab it and play my turns

Yes, Greebley has had most of the day to reply now, so I'd say go ahead.

Maddening , but thanks for keeping us posted.

Pre-Turn
get the scientist in Pasadena back to work, lit in 4 together with the prebuild
defeat that sword

IT there we go, Vikings finish SoZ

1. 330BC
defeat 5 intruders, no leader

IT defeat 1 sword on defense

2. 310BC
we need some catapults, I reckon, start a few
move strike force south

3. 290BC
Americans start to run into our land, do not attack as there is a nice settler pair amongst them
strike force move out

IT quite a few enemies come towards us from all directions
we get literature and I change the palace to Glib

4. 270BC
I leave research on as we have cash and it takes another 13 turns for us to complete the Glib
go for the wheel
smite 2 enemies, no leader
spot Uskudar in the south

IT enemy loses a sword
spot a green archer

5. 250BC
we got another enemy, the Aztecs, declare on them
defeat 3 enemy units, but lose one immortal on a reg spear

IT we lose another immortal ondefense, things are a little hairy

6. 230BC
we avenge our lost immortal by defeating the sword, first cat strikes a spear
in much better news

gr29230.jpg

defeat 2 more archers
battle of Uskudar, defeat a massive 4 units without losses and take the city for 1 slave

7. 210BC
the defenses in our west are too weak really
send our army that is now filled to cover for now
defeat 2 units

IT kill 2 units on defense

8. 190BC
nothing much this time, defeat 2 units

IT we defeat an archer on defense and get the wheel
WC next in 4

9. 170BC
we are really a little stretched, defeat 2 units using the army as well

10. 150BC
we get a settler, but have not even planted the previous one

I left the settler alone for the next player to decide where to put it. The other is currently moving into the empty space in the southeast
At Uskudar our strike force is rested and can move on preferably to the east

we need some catapults, I reckon, start a few

Good thinking, and it's a relief to have our first army.

Daeron, with Greebley still on skip, you're up.

Oke, I've got it. Good to see we've finally got that leader.

I'm not quite sure where to go with the second settler. There's a lot of land to fill to the south. But I'm leaning towards, razing the Byazntine town near Peppermint and then settling SW-SW-SW of Peppermint, or SW-SW-W of Peppermint.

On Uskudar, is leaving one immortal behind enough protection if I take the stack east?

We have a good, easily held line in the west at the moment, and settling beyond it right in the path of all the Korean and Byzantine units might be troublesome, before we've done anything to weaken those two civs. I'd suggest that you send the new settler basically SE for four turns, and then decide based on circumstances whether to settle on the gold hill SE of Aydin (this would presumably involve the strike force's taking the nearby Portuguese city), or on the pre-roaded spot claiming two cows S-SW-SW of Icky Twerp. If it doesn't seem safe to found a city at all with this settler during your round, that's all right.

You might also want to wait on founding a city with the southern settler until you can get the last length of road to the site built.

We're overproducing spearmen, given how much better Immortals are for just ten shields more. Persepolis should return to its usual Immortal-settler cycle and Bactra should also switch to Immortals.

There are a couple of safe-looking Immortal-on-archer attacks we can make before hitting Enter--the Immortal in Bactra against the stacked American archers SE of the town, and the Immortal in Aydin against the full-strength Portuguese archer to the E (since the pinged archer won't do anything).

The Immortals in Arbela and Shiraz should cross the river before we hit Enter so that they can help out at Bactra next turn. This will require us to boost the lux rate to keep Arbela content.

On Uskudar, is leaving one immortal behind enough protection if I take the stack east?

As long as the stack is only one city away on a road, yes. If the stack abandons contact with Uskudar altogether we'll need to leave a second Immortal behind. This force too can move E before we hit Enter, of course.

Yeah, I was just counting the amount of cities producing immortals. Since MDI's aren't an improvement, we should keep building as much of them as we can.

Thanks for the answers by the way.

I produced more spears as we are woefully short of units after moving the stack south. Actually we should use our army to conquer land and maybe pull back the mini stack after a while
