GR29 - AWM vs 30 civs, Pangea

Good news, and congratulations to Vmxa on his technical wizardry. :goodjob:

Turn log
Spoiler :
Pre flight

Science: 70 % (warrior code in 3 turns)
Lux: 10 %
Income: +5 gpt

Treasury: 268 g

The Great Library finishes in 7 turns.

I switch Persepolis and Bactra to building an Immortal and move a few units around to get two immortals towards Bactra.

Need to road towards the spot 3E of Phantium, but will take a turn to get a worker there.

Our stack finds the new Otto capitol of Izmit, size 2 and it is on a river.

Immortal red lines against American archer at Bactra, but promotes.
Kill another Port. archer at Aydin. (2 of 2)

Hit enter

American archer kills a spearman at Bactra
Another spearman 2 hp and immortal successfully defend at two others.(4 of 5)

Phantanium spearman -> catapult

Turn 1, 130 BC
Lose one immortal at Izmut, killing three spears. It gets razed, I thought that the palace would have given them culture? (7 of 9)

Kill Portugese archer and two American archers (10 of 12)

Otto. spear, Byz. archer all say bye bye. (12 of 14)

Looks like THERAT was right about being stretched in the west. I'm not in the position to use the army somewhere else.

IBT
Byzantine units (archer and two swords) huddle up on the hill west of Tyre.

Tyre walls -> catapult

Turn 2, 110 BC
WC in 1 turn, drop science down to 50 %

Immortal kills another American archer, army gets rid of the Byzantines. (15 of 17)

We find horses at the ruins of Izmit. Will definitely settle towards the SE now.

IBT
We learn Warrior Code

Istanbul barracks -> spear (town has whip unhappiness and war unhappiness, so I stop growth and maximize shield output)

Arbela Immortal -> Immortal
Shiraz Immortal -> Immortal
Sidon Spearman -> Catapult

Turn 3, 90 BC
4 turns towards the GLib, I put the slider down to 0 %, making +50 gpt.

army kills last byzantine unit (16 of 18)

IBT
Bactra gets annoyed by a lot of spears, best mind our infrastructure.

Persepolis Immortal -> Immortal

Turn 4, 70 BC
Nothing much

IBT
Nothing

Turn 5, 50 BC
Army kills two Korean swords (18 of 20)
Immortals kill port archer (19 of 21)
Cover iron with spearman, we need catapults at the east for all these spears so I switch Phantanium to catapult

IBT
horsehockye, I messed up and allowed two slaves to get captured and killed.

Peppermint catapult -> catapult

Turn 6, 30 BC
Found Hamadan on gold hill -> walls

Kill Korean sword, Byz archer, Port archer and American spear (23 of 25)

The GLib in 1 turn

IBT
We get the Forbidden Palace message

Persepolis immortal -> settler (grew to size 7, my bad)
Pasadena The Great Library -> Immortal
Arbela Immortal -> Immortal
Shiraz immortal -> Immortal
Phantanium Catapult -> Spearman

Turn 7, 10 BC
Move stack next to Lagos

Kill American spearman and archer with elite, not sure how many elite kills I've had in this game, but I don't feel lucky with my rolls.
Portuguese archer and spear eat dirt (27 of 29)

IBT
Byzantines want to talk, but we don't speak stupid.

The Great Library gives us... *drum ruffle*

Ceremonial burial, Mysticism, Philosophy, Map Making,Horseback Riding and Polytheism!

I decide a min run towards Monarchy isn't a bad idea and switch a taxman to scientist.

Bactra Immortal -> Immortal

Byzantines are building ToA

Turn 8, 10 AD
Found Ergili -> walls

We assault Lagos

We lose one immortal, but the two spears fall and our final immortal..
Spoiler :

Spoiler :

We raze Lagos for two slaves. (30 of 32)

Start mining another plains at Arbela so it can build 3-turn immortals.

We've got enough units now to free up both armies, I think.

IBT
Aydin catapult -> catapult
Tye Catapult -> Catapult
Icky Twerp Catapult -> Catapult

Aztecs also start on ToA.

Turn 9, 30 AD
Switch Peppermint to barracks, didn't realize it didn't have one.

Kill three American archers at Ergili (33 of 35)
Kill Porto archer at Aydin (34 of 36)

IBT
About nine Korean and Byzantine swordsmen now to the west, army is still there. So I spoke to soon about freeing up two armies.
Lots of Portuguese archers to the SE, but they are easy pickings.

Spot an American galley, we need to start watch our coastline.

Istanbul Spearman -> Spearman
Persepolis Settler -> Immortal
Sidon Catapult -> Catapult

Turn 10, 50 AD

Pasadena threatens to riot at size 7, hire a scientist and it is building immortals at 8 spt. Probably could use an extra worker after the immortal.
I've started Sidon on a library so it can work those two whales and fish bonus.

Other than that start two workers on roading. I'll leave the rest of the choices to the next player.

Unit count: 56, with 60 allowed
1 Settler
1 Worker
2 Warrior
14 spearman (2 elites)
9 Catapult
2 Army
26 Immortal (4 elites that can still make a leader)

8 slaves

Summary
Spoiler :
Razed two towns, founded two others
Got our second army
Build the GLib and are on a one scientist run to monarchy
Killed 34 units and lost two

Our West
I still think settling another town west of Peppermint will make all those swords a lot easier to handle. Right now, it's very easy for them to reach the hills. There are a lot of swords right now, but there are plenty of units to get rid of them. Note that the catapults and all units have movement left, I screw up sometimes, but I'm not *that* thick. :p
Spoiler :

The East
the area to the Southeast, with those horses and river looks very very good. The Americans still haven't got the iron hooked up and the Portuguese are also only working with archers. Nice killing field.

Hamadan has an empty army with it. The *elite immortal is called Cyrus and is right outside Hamadan. Some rotating of units is needed to free up veteran units for the army, since the elites are mostly in the South East.
Spoiler :

The North East
Started Sidon on Library for those whales and fish, note the American galley. Next player needs to make sure there's capable units at our capitol.
Spoiler :

We should probably think about the Heroic Epic at this point. Either build it or rush it with the next leader. I do think that we're losing out on a lot of possible promotions right now. I kind of like us building as much immortals as possible while still allowed. So I'd use a leader.

1cpt so did they have 10 turns of the palace?

Ohh, they need a cultural expansion, always thought that just culture was enough.

Fine round. :thumbsup:

I see that Vmxa has already answered this one--no surprise. ;)

That's all right--Persepolis does spend one turn at size seven on its present cycle.

Good thinking.

I've got it.

nice round :goodjob:

I think we really need more workers

I think we really need more workers

This is a division-of-labour problem--normally it's Greebley who builds workers early in the game, and he hasn't been playing. :lol: I'll see what I can do.

This is really going along nicely. WTG gentlemen:goodjob:

50 (0): I see the point of founding a city beyond Mr. Peppermint to keep our enemies off the hills, but it can't happen before we get some roads built in the area, so it's a project for a future settler, not this one.

Fortunately Arbela and Pasadena will be able to peel off workers soon.

We cut down two Ottoman archers in the tundra outside Uskudar (2-0).

We trample a Korean swordsman outside Tyre (3-0).

70 (1): Eighteen enemy units, mostly swordsmen, are visible on the western (or Tyre-Mr. Peppermint) front now. We smite five, but our army loses a lot of HP (8-0).

We slaughter four Portuguese archers outside Ergili (12-0).

We get our second Immortal army filled up.

Arbela and Pasadena produce workers.

90 (2): On the western front we outduel five enemy swordsmen, losing an Immortal (17-1).

The Byzantines are stretching our defenses by advancing on Icky Twerp.

110 (3): We shatter another five enemy units on the western front, and there's not much left of this attack wave (22-1).

We best three enemy archers on the southern front (25-1).

Two Jaguar Warriors appear in the west to complicate our task.

130 (4): We carve up a Korean stack of two swordsmen and a spearman in the west (28-1).

Our new Immortal army strikes down two Portuguese spearmen in Guimaraes, but the town remains garrisoned (30-1).

We disembowel a Portuguese spearman outside Ergili (31-1).

We slay a Byzantine swordsman adjacent to Tyre (32-1). The Immortal in question then survives a surprising counterattack by a yellowlined Byz swordsman (33-1).

The GLib brings us CoL and Construction.

150 (5): We storm Guimaraes, held by a remaining garrison of a spearman and two archers (36-1). Since we aren't adding cities quickly, I'll try to hold the town. If the gamble fails, it'll only have cost us one slave.

We butcher another three unescorted Portuguese archers, this time outside Aydin (39-1).

We dispose of a wandering American spearman in the east (40-1).

We bombard and break two Jaguar Warriors adjacent to Mr. Peppermint (42-1).

170 (6): We begin an advance on Seattle, overrunning an American archer on the way (43-1).

We crush a Portuguese archer beyond Guimaraes (44-1).

A quiet turn in the west, as our enemies hold back and our army heals.

Mr. Peppermint barracks --> Immortals.

190 (7): We found Dariush Kabir between Ergili and Guimaraes, nicely consolidating our recent gains in the south.

We liquidate two Portuguese archers near Guimaraes (46-1).

We impale a Byz swordsman approaching Icky Twerp (47-1).

We have a tactically useful length of road extending out of Mr. Peppermint now, and we use it to smite six Korean and Byzantine units (53-1).

The covering spearman ;) repels an archer attack on our force approaching Seattle (54-1).

210 (8): A Japanese galley is off Sidon, so we have to declare war. The Japanese have thirteen cities, silks, and horses, and they're ahead of us by Monarchy.

We take Seattle, held by two Starbucks baristas (56-1). :D Keeping the city shouldn't be a problem.

We bombard and expunge a Byz stack of three on the hill next to Tyre (59-1).

To the west of Mr. Peppermint we exterminate two Korean and two Byz units, also moving the First Immortal Army next to the nearest Byz town, Sardica (63-1).

We batter another Ottoman archer approaching Uskudar (64-1).

230 (9): We auto-raze Sardica, held by two spearmen, and capture a worker (66-1).

West of Mr. Peppermint we dispense with two Jags and a Byz swordsman (69-1).

An elite Immortal loses five rounds in a row to a roaming American spearman. Our next attack accounts for the wretch (70-2).

Guimaraes finally comes out of resistance, so we can pop-rush there and reduce the population to one.

250 (10): We found Pee-wee's Playhouse, extending our line in the west three tiles SW of Mr. Peppermint.

We sacrifice two Korean swordsmen at the founding ceremonies for Pee-wee's Playhouse (72-2).

We bludgeon a Portuguese archer next to Guimaraes (73-2).

The Second Immortal Army moves next to Lisbon.

Our American strike force moves adjacent to New York.

We produced three workers this round, and two more will complete this IT.

Twenty elite victories this round didn't produce a Great Leader. :rolleyes: Arbela will complete the HE in twelve turns, at least.

I've been aggressive about attacking in several directions at once. With our enemies giving us no real difficulty with their attacks, and defending their cities only with spearmen, this is the time for it.

It may require a few turns and some caution, but the Second Immortal Army should be able to take Lisbon by itself.

The First Immortal Army should probably just heal in place this turn, so the next player can see the IT before deciding whether to send it against more enemy cities or pull it back for defense. The western front is quiet now, but was highly active at times during my round.

The next player may want to use the worker next to Pee-wee's Playhouse for instant walls when it finishes its road--painful, but the safest play.

I've sent the Immortal normally kept in Arbela across the river to save a turn, so the assumption is that the Immortal Shiraz is about to complete will replace it. But come to think of it, Shiraz is about to reach size six, so the Immortal may just have to re-cross the river (assuming that we return the lux rate to 10%). :lol:

Istanbul and Aydin aren't ideal places to build settlers, but we need them from somewhere to take our opportunities in the south; one settler out of Persepolis every seven turns isn't nearly enough.

We can return the lux rate to 10% after Pasadena produces its worker this IT. We should continue to give Pasadena one of the cows when the capital can spare it, and skim off workers whenever Pasadena reaches size seven.

After this IT Persepolis will need to take a cow back from Pasadena.

We can think about settling east of Sidon now.

Encompassing the compass:

great progress :goodjob:

Let's not stretch too thin so we can get over the anarchy period once we get monarchy

Preturn: Looks like we will get Currency and Monarchy next turn.
Things look good so I hit enter.

IBT: We get Monarchy and Currency as suspected.

260 AD: Seems as good a time as any to go for Monarchy. Anarchy descends - we get only 4 turns - pretty good.

Capture New York. Kill several other units. No losses.

270 AD: Capture Lisbon. Attack Heraclea which has dropped to size 2. I suspect it will go to size 1 and we will end up destroying it.
Built Bicowville.

IBT: A Spear holds off 2 units before dying. We get the bad luck of New York flipping at size 3. Cost the Spear that was guarding it, but no immortals which are just outside it.

280 AD: Capture New York back.
Heraclea destroyed as expected and get 2 workers. Kill a few more units.

IBT: We got Engineering.

290 AD: Autodestroy St. Louis with immortals. We lose one Spear when I accidentally attack with it. I sometimes reload when I misclick, but in this case I hadn't saved recently enough to do so.

IBT: We are now a Monarchy.

300 AD: Kill random troops. We need more Spear now.

IBT: Lose an advancing Immortal to an Archer.

310 AD: Attack Oporto

IBT: Enemies advance.

320 AD : Auto-destroy Oporto. We are next to Chicago.

IBT: Our immortal stack is doing poorly as 2 Immortals get killed in American lands. Two civs are met Babylon and Carthage. They are trying to send in Settlers.

330 AD: Lose another Immortal attacking an Archer. Attack on Chigago also costs one but we capture it. Our advance is pretty much stopped. Probably should have waited for a Spear but would have been a while.

340 AD: Auto-destroy Ottoman town of Konya.

350 AD: Capture Adrianople to the West. Lose an Immortal attacking Sagres.

Notes:
We need more units to the North as well as roads for easier access and catapults. The border was quiet but we met new civs likely to the North of us. I would move some troops that way and 1/2 the cats. There is also an Army near that front (taking out cities behind

Korea is sending swords from the West, but I felt we had enough to handle them so the Army went after Adrianople.

More settlers would be good, but we also want towns above size 7 for unit support.

Pee-wee never rushed walls because it hasn't been attacked.

I would say our goals are to explore and remove towns to the south and set up solid fronts to the north and west. We will want more troops - anarchy meant we weren't building any for a while.
