The East is Red!

Has it to do with drugs (not cannabis)
most frequent used drugs ?

What is a "categorial scale"?
A category is a type (generally a set, distinct from other sets there, and doesn't have to be linked to those other sets in any usual way either; eg one category could in theory be "cats" and another "average height of humans").
I suppose "categorial scale" means the colors in your map signify sets that are a subset of something in a very clearly linked way? If so you could just say they are a scale?

Is this about type of measurement (obviously not meters or celsius) or other scientific/trade convention?

Could also be about foreign language learning.

Neither.

There might be somewhere a very spurious correlation related to illegal and legal drugs, but I'd not really know and would not focus on it.

Yes.
If my categories are e.g. "black hair", "brown hair", "blond hair", then these are categories, but also somewhat a scale, no? (maybe not the very best example)

I am just trying to establish the semantics of the formal language of J ^_^

So basically "categorial scale" are subtypes of x, potentially defined by ordering within x.

So it is subjective. Interesting. Is it more common atypical eye color? ^_^
Or maybe something to do with more common type of plastic surgery. Doubt it, since Italy afaik is the plastic surgery capital of Europe.

It being something cultural...

I really break my head on what Germany and Switzerland have in common that is not in Austria... with Austria having the same green as France, UK, Greece, etc.
The same with Netherlands and Luxembourg and not in UK.
Would be nice to know whether Czech is red or other color. Czech has, long time historical seen, the most western culture of the former Soviet satellites.

Anyway... here a refresh of the map

First note:
Black is basically grey, and both probably mainly mean that nobody could be bothered to fill in /update the data.

No, neither.

is it a thing each country have more than one of, or just one?

It's not a "thing", actually.

Does it have anything to do with marriage laws?

No, also not.
But since this turns out to be complicated: This is about law.

Germany was for a long time green, and I didn't notice when it turned yellow, although I think I just don't remember.
I just checked, Czech Republic is red, as it seems.

So Netherlands stands out together with Belgium and Luxumburg on something cultural, on law, and there are recent changes.

For NL
If it is not related to drugs... if abortion laws is no longer exceptional in Europe... the next frontline of individual life rights is euthanasia, and Belgium has that cleared meanwhile also.

Do the laws have to do with politics?

How each country determines taxes? Switzerland and Germany have bilateral treaties on taxation, and Benelux is often doing its own thing.

Maybe not intended, but this is it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_euthanasia

Red: Euthanasia illegal
Green: Passive euthanasia (e.g. removal of life support) legal
Yellow: Physician-assisted suicide legal
Blue: Active euthanasia legal

In Germany physician-assisted euthanasia became only legal in 2014, and I must have forgotten it. I remember that before, people who'd like to have euthanasia would travel to Switzerland or the Netherlands.

The only country on the map which is probably rightfully grey is the Vatican, because I'm pretty sure they don't have any laws regarding this matter, because nobody would even think about it.

-> next one up to Hrothbern :).
