The dark grey is not no data.

I note that you may also find it difficult to distinguish between purple and purple-brown.

As far as I can see, by zooming in on the file with a large screen, Syria is the only purple-brown country.

But Bangladesh and Eritrea are green.

What do the purple countries have in common -
Pakistan and Afghanistan (but not Bangladesh)
Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia
Ivory Coast (but none of the surrounding nations)
Mauritania
Ethiopia and South Sudan (but not Eritrea or Yemen)
Angola and Madagascar
Laos and the independent half of Papua New Guinea

Syria seems to be a related colour.

Places I don't want to go on holiday?
Something relating to civil strife, but with as many exceptions as abeyances to the rule.

Is this green or gray? It is the colour of the US according to the gimp, #207876 : ███████
Anyway, that colour = Competitive democracy without territorial disputes.
Red (eg. China) = Single party state, or single party has been in power for decades
Orange (eg. South Africa) = Ethnically divided
Green (eg. Somalia) = Ongoing insurgency
Purple-brown (ie. Syria) = Active civil war
Green (eg. Saudi Arabia) = Monarchy

The categories do not reflect the political nature of the state.

The similarity in colours of categories does not reflect a similarity in the categories.

Samson's list includes one one word category name.

None of the categories are piracy as such.

Do you know if Jamaica is different from Haiti (I have done a bit of squinting, and I THINK Jamaica is red and Haiti Orange)? Somaliland different from Greenland/Western Sahara?

Yes, origin of players active in the NBA, blue is had at least one active player in the past, but not anymore.

It's a bit unfair since there's obviously a correlation with population, see the dark red American states which just correspond to Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Texsas I think. North Carolina being the outliner there. And you can make a lot of jokes about the whiteness of Vermont, but in the end, it's just a low population state. The population correlation doesn't work as well outside the US, since Basketball isn't as popular everywhere else

@Kyriakos, you up
NC is no outlier. Teh UNC and Duke basketball programs have produced many NBA stars including Michael Jordan. :p

I think the map is based on the hometown, not the first club/college. But I gotta check that.

I was referring to NC as an outlier since there is no big metropolis there whereas the other deep red areas all have those. But of course, your give the good explanation here :)

Just to answer your question: It's not grey. This color is teal (a combination of blue and green).

Otherwise, I make no guesses or comments.

Some colour divisions show colonial history, but most not, so ...

There is arguably a connection, but it is so indirect that I think persuing that is more of going down a rabbit hole than a help.

Unlike yourself, I have no skills/tools to populate a map from raw data.

I took a map from the Internet and merely obscured the title and the key decode using MS Paint.

When I magnify it with windows photo viewer, I too conclude that: Jamaica is Red and Haiti is Orange.

I regard Somaliland as white as is Greenland and Western Sahara, all three I deduce as being "no data".
