Number of universities in the world top 500? top 1000?

You win.

Ah yeah... The fact that so many universities in the ex-eastern bloc countries were rated so low has stuck with me. It seemed unfair at the time, but I can't remember any details. What I do remember is how tough of a time my parents had to get their degrees certified, even though the level of schooling they went through was likely at a higher level than the equivalent degree in Canada..

Unfortunately I have a busy day today and will not be able to look for a map to post until.. probably tomorrow evening. If anybody wants to jump in with a map before that - go ahead! If I don't see one posted by then I will start looking for one

Wasn't that related to how centralised Soviet universities were? A handful of vast universities.

On absolute rather than per capita metrics you get lots of oddities at both ends of the spectrum. If you compare Austin in Texas with the London School of Economics (or even my old place Sussex), they are 1/30 of the size. If Austin narrowly beats LSE to X papers published with 30x the number of staff and students, which is the better University?

IIRC these ratings rely on citation indexes and since Western researchers tend to refer to each other more often, they are somewhat skewed in favor of Western universities.
But Russia's education standards also dropped quite a bit after breakup of the USSR. Only started to restore last decade or so.

As I understand it Soviet/Russia are good for STEM type subjects not so good for liberal arts and things like that.

Alot of it is perception and/or wealth. Ivy league, Oxford, Cambridge etc.

There are a number of research institutions that may or may not be
included in such assessments as they are technically not universities:

I.e.

French: (Louis) Pasteur Institute
German: Max Planck Institutes

Argonne Labs had the highest number of Nobel prize winners last time I looked. (About 20 years ago!)

As "tomorrow evening" has turned into five days I shall jump in:
