Simple lighthearted thread. I like 'em medium-rare, and can do medium, but med-well and well done are way too done, and I don't like rare because the meat is actually cold in the middle. You? Poll coming.

I'm in what's probably going to be the very small catergory of "doesn't like steaks". Not much for beef... I prefer seafood. :dunno:

Its probably not going to be very big, but its good to know it wasn't wasted:p

Also, even before checking the poll, I guessed (Correctly) that random was the second one to vote in med-rare:p

What can I say, I'm a man of good taste. I tend to order rare in restaurants, since most overcook their steak and I like it rare on the off-chance they get it right. (This of course depends on the restaurant.)

Unfortunately, my family tends to like theirs medium-well, and I do the grilling. By the time I put mine on, our already mediocre grill has lost quite a bit of heat, which means I can never get it charred quite right. Ah well. They always love the ones I feed them, so it seems I've gotten quite good at making bad steak.

I like them good (medium).

Medium Well isn't great, although I can deal with it for a burger. Well-done is when its truly bad (Though I confess to starting out with well-done and "Evolving" into medium-rare over a period of time:p). And rare bugs me because its too "Underdone" to me. I think I've hit my sweet spot because I ordered a medium-rare steak on my cruise last week and they got it exactly right (As you say, restaurants tend to overcook a bit) and when I got it I remember thinking that it was perfect, but if it were any less done, I wouldn't like it as much. So outright rare wouldn't be best for me, though I'd certainly take a rare steak over a well-done steak, and probably over a medium-well steak as well.

But really I can't remember the last time I had a steak, so I don't know.

It depends on the cut of steak. In general, medium rare.

I don't know, I haven't eaten enough steaks and I don't know how they are cooked. For a long time I didn't like steak because the only way I ever tried them was in a steak and kidney pie, or the way my dad cooks them (for hours in gravy until they fall apart into mush).

Any steak I've ever ate tasted awful so I voted that I didn't like it.

I also generally do not enjoy my meat to be oozing with blood.

Steaks are best when salted thoroughly, cooked for 10 seconds on each side and eaten immediately.

The more cooked steaks are, the less flavor they have and the worse they taste.

My mom always always cooks them well-done and beyond but I've never liked it like that very much. I tried medium rare once and wasn't expecting the blood. I generally prefer Medium-rare but am working my way towards well.

Rare (Cold red center)
Medium-rare (Warm red center)
Medium (Pink throughout, possibly small amount of red)
Medium well (Some pink in center, mixed with brown)
Well-done (No pink at all)

No degree of wellness has a cold center. Rare has a warm center.

Even blue steaks are at least warmed up to room temperature (or warmed in an oven), so the center won't be cooked, but it's never going to be cold.

The marbling in cold steak will have a disgusting consistency.

This is what I used to do, but I've since stopped ordering steaks at restaurants that are likely to overcook, as I could do it better myself at home.

I also generally do not enjoy my meat to be oozing with blood.

The liquid that oozes out is mostly water and myoglobin, not blood.

Medium rare or rare.. If I'm at a restaurant I'll order medium-rare, which 80% of the time arrives as medium..

When I'm cooking them at home I'll do it by eye and 70% of the time I end up with rare. The rarer - the better.

Voted medium rare just cause
