How rich is your area?

The per capita income of Rio is IRRC 14,000 dollars.
I wouldn't be surprised if the neighborhood I live in, Lagoa, has a per capita income more than 5 times that much. According to portuguese wiki it has the biggest Human Development Index of the city (they mention it is higher than any country in the world, but it is silly to compare a neighborhood of 18,500 people to an entire country).

Wikipedia said:
Thousand Oaks has the 11th highest per capita income and the 4th highest median household income in the nation (against all other cities with a population of 50,000 or more).

The median income for a household in the city was $89,953, and the median income for a family was $99,870.[2] Males had a median income of $82,815 versus $50,604 for females. The per capita income for the city was $54,304. About 2.2% of families and 3.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.2% of those under age 18 and 4.1% of those age 65 or over.

Not too shabby, although my family is far below the median :(.

I've been trying to get the exact numbers...the data I could find for New Orleans has a median income of around $27,133, well below the US average. I *think* that number was before Katrina, so it could be even lower now.

(Inspired by a comparisons between my town and Bigfoot's)

Wikipedia (and other sources) keep nice census data on the median income of your area. Let's see hos rich your area is. Feel free to add your state/nation if you wish.

Mine- The median income for a household in the borough was $31,719, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $30,357 versus $17,813 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $12,075. About 4.8% of families and 9.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.7% of those under the age of eighteen and 5.0% of those sixty five or over.

I grew up in the same town as Bigfoot, Mamaroneck, New York. :)

Quote from the wiki page:

The median income for a household in the town was $84,213, and the median income for a family was $118,774 (these figures had risen to $108,702 and $144,834 respectively as of a 2007 estimate[2]). Males had a median income of $81,249 versus $42,703 for females. The per capita income for the town was $57,822. About 2.9% of families and 4.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 7.1% of those age 65 or over.
