I can only tell that the city just nearby, Mazamet, once was very rich.
Mazamet was the producer of cloth for the French army, and they invented a unique process for tanning and fellmongery.
They needed a lot of sheep skins for that industry, and a lot of trade networks with North Africa, Argentina, South Africa, Australia, New Zealands, were developped to meet these needs.
At the peak of the industry, just before WWII, 90% of the world "woollen skill" was processed in Mazamet.
In term of bank concentration, Mazamet was the second French city, just after Paris.
Unfortunately, competition, especially from Asia, put an end to this, and now there is only one leather factory still working here.

In 2005, average annual income per capita was 17 888 for France, and 17 135 for my region.

In my 'statistical division', the average total personal income is about $A40 000. It's slightly less for the surrounding suburbs, and about $A48 000 for Sydney as a whole. New South Wales is roughly $A45 000, and Australia is about $A42 600. It is interesting to note the difference between NSW and Tasmania, which is only at about $A37 000. That's all from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and from about 2005. Wikipedia doesn't have any really good stats for Australia.

According to wiki the median househould-income in Switzerland is $81,274. Since Basel is one of the richer areas in Switzerland I guess it's a tad higher where I live. Don't know how accurate those numbers are, though.
