I was half-referencing this strip

Thought my avatar was in need of an update, so I switched it from the Fortuna Wheel to the Moon-and-Star from Morrowind. I couldn't get the transparency to work unfortunately.

This should work, Ajidica.

Nice choice of avatar, Ajidica. I'll let you off not choosing ALMSIVI though.

Thanks! It looks great.

What is the ALMSIVI symbol? The only one I could think of was the hand you see on Ordinator shields, but at avatar size the Moon-and-Star looks much better.
EDIT: For anyone who doesn't get the reference, the Moon-and-Star is the symbol of the Dunmer Saint Indoril Nerevar who plays quite an important role in Morrowind.

Well, this was the best I could do, unfortunately. :( (The up-side is that it comes with a transparent background already.)

I was thinking of the front cover image for Morrowind, but I'd forgotten that it has Akatosh's dragon on it and doesn't seem to be around without the game title across the centre.

That's just the imperial seal, yes? Well, maybe not seal, but emblem, whatever?

It's the Imperial seal, yes, with the Daedric letters for A, S & V arranged at the three corners of an inverted isoceles triangle behind it.

While this photo of Baden-Powell has noticeable artefacts, I like the expression on his face. After I tire of him, I'll probably use a couple of other Victorian personalities as avatars.

Interesting choice. He's not generally considered favourably by liberals, I hear.

I wrote about him in my "19th century Russian and British writing on India" graduation thesis, and found his "good ol' boy" demeanour to be quite characteristic. The photo I chose as avatar reflects it well.

I suppose you're right. I guess he's just too much of a familiar figure for me to be comfortable with the idea of him. He belongs to another age really. And the reputation of the Victorians is so tarnished with imperialism, it's hard to think they had anything to recommend them.

In his final letter to the Scouts, Baden-Powell wrote:

…I have had a most happy life and I want each one of you to have a happy life too. I believe that God put us in this jolly world to be happy and enjoy life. Happiness does not come from being rich, nor merely being successful in your career, nor by self-indulgence. One step towards happiness is to make yourself healthy and strong while you are a boy, so that you can be useful and so you can enjoy life when you are a man. Nature study will show you how full of beautiful and wonderful things God has made the world for you to enjoy. Be contented with what you have got and make the best of it. Look on the bright side of things instead of the gloomy one. But the real way to get happiness is by giving out happiness to other people. Try and leave this world a little better than you found it and when your turn comes to die, you can die happy in feeling that at any rate you have not wasted your time but have done your best. 'Be Prepared' in this way, to live happy and to die happy — stick to your Scout Promise always — even after you have ceased to be a boy — and God help you to do it

This is so smug and self-satisfied, imo. Over-earnest, maybe.

I don't endorse everything or everyone I put in my avatars (I had an image of Constantius II there a while ago, and I don't care one way or other about Constantine's son - I just liked the style). Speaking of imperialism and Baden-Powell, I am actually considering placing a rather hilarious quote of his that goes like "Indians consider themselves equal to us; of course, theoretically they're correct, but in practice, it's just too dangerous" in my sig, though I am afraid that wouldn't mesh with the Civ AARs. I simply find his type to be entertaining.

Well, fine. I also find it entertaining that you find it entertaining to have BP as your avatar.

Baden Powell said:
A boy scout smiles and whistles under all circumstances.

It is possible, though it takes practice, to smile and whistle at the same time.
