IT IV Update 1 - Years 400-405 AD
Non-Military Events:
The Nihonese presence in "Kayiawa", as they had termed the lands adjacent to Aztlan, has been increased considerably and a second outpost was established. Trade has been suffering due to the epidemics lately, though.
The epidemics in the Americas spread.

The Nortuguese colonial efforts to the west continue. Claims were extended to the entirety of (known) Froztugal[1]. In the Americas, Nortuguese explorers and traders explored and traded some more, but with insufficient funding and bad weather they were unable to get much done; still, several small outposts on the mainland are established, and colonists begin to arrive in Tuniitia. Lastly, some minor expeditions to West Africa took place, with no significant results apart from trade.
Far to the south, very late in 405 AD, a Phoenician expedition - harassed by the storms (-2 Phoenician ships) - has reached a faraway coast and established contact with the Maraja people. A minor temporary outpost has been set up, and trade begun, but it is unclear if anything good will come out of this venture in the long run.
Cymru had managed to procure a temporary (and comparative) economic boom (Economy to Stagnant, +1 Trade). But as Nortugal reopens, it seems unlikely that the Cymru would stand a real chance in the greater market, while the Iceni upwards surge has already made Cymru's survival just as unlikely.
A general, all-permeating spirit of Solist zeal seems to have appeared in the Iceni Empire after the historic treaty with the Lord-Plaintiff of Aurelaeni. In exchange for a mere regular tithe, the Lord-Plaintiff granted the Iceni Emperor position of leader of the Church of Sol within the Iceni Empire, with all the related powers and influence, in name at least (+1 Confidence). As the Church and the State now have a single leader, religious zeal and political loyalty became as one (+1 Confidence, +cultural fanaticism). On this new wave of zeal, the Iceni government introduced a wide array of reforms. A church reorganization (and education reform) had commenced, though it might take some time and money to carry to the end. A powerful, yet loyal military-religious order, the Sons of Sol, had been created. Soon enough, it was ordered to take part in a general sweep, not unlike that done by the Aquitanean Inquisition in the late 1st Century AD. Druidists and crypto-Druidists were rounded up all over the country and after two years of non-stop executions, the nation was declared "pure", although in truth it seems likely that some crypto-Druidists are still hiding, and trying to blend in with the Solists. Still, the Druidist community has been dealt a grievous blow from which it may never recover. These actions gained the Iceni some notoriety even in some of the more tolerant Solist nations (-1 Prestige), to say nothing of Caledonia, but it would seem that the Druids will NOT rise again for sure now. Also, the crackdowns served to strenghthen the fanaticism and the unity of the Solist Iceni. They and the newly-expansionist Caledonia (see military events) are set on a collision course by now, as even the moderates on both sides begin to howl for blood...
The rather unexpected Iceni developments have boosted the Iceni Emperor's influence in the Solist world, especially amongst the radicals, considerably. Meanwhile, Dumnorix Caethaldius of the Gaelic Empire was having nothing but trouble because of it. The initial agreement that put the Iceni Emperor in charge of the Church of Sol in his realm has by itself damaged Gaul badly; at home, many becried the weakening of Church unity and concession of power to foreign rulers, and feared a schism; abroad, especially in Frankreich, the local elites were outraged at the way the Iceni Emperor and his court - who wasn't even an official Gaelic ally until now - got such power while THEIR rulers - and by extension, themselves - got "snubbed". As the Iceni purification commenced, things indeed begun moving towards a schism, due to the bitter controversy within the clerical elite that it had provoked; but even though such a schism was avoided, the Dumnorix was forced to try and win back some of the prestige within the Church of Sol that he had lost to the Iceni Emperor by funding missionary operations (-1 Prestige). These operations saw comparatively little success, but Solist communities were established in Norge and Carthaginian Iberia. The existant Jutlander ones grew as well. Meanwhile, all these religious issues distract pretty much everyone from the perhaps more important actions of the Dumnorix, such as the military reorganization and the great road-building programmes.
In a startling move, the Frankish capital was moved to Brenburg, a more central location. Though that does make both the central and the eastern parts of the country more loyal, in the west the effects are the opposite (see military events)...
A few of the already-Tarunist Lapp tribes join Tarunia. The pagans in the far north are yet to convert, though.
As the DIE fully shifted its attention to the Mediterranean (see below), it was decided that the vassal state of Slavania was more of a burden than anything else. Thus it was granted full independence, in exchange for an alliance of equals, which the new Slavanian ruler Velikiy Knyaz Vladimir I gladly accepted (+1 Confidence). The newly-independent Slavania however quickly turned away from Dacia in culture, at least. The state was renamed into the "Cernorusian Empire", and the capital, Gorynstuza, into Groznygrad. Militaristic reforms took place; a special region, the Vojna Krajna in the country's southeast, was forced to provide the Cernorusians with a huge military (+30 thousands, -2 Army Quality). An elite Ljuta Druzhina was created as well. The fertile Cernorusian fields allowed this monstrosity of a war machine to be supplied acceptably. What use will be made of this horde is uncertain, but Cernorus' many neighbours are wary (-1 Prestige)...
DIE has indeed decided to concentrate on the Mediterranean affairs now. The alliances with Egypt and Luca were confirmed; the Imperial Pact of Carthage (see below) was signed; the first few Imperial Juggernauts were designed and built (+1 Confidence); and already, hungry and wrathful eyes have been cast at an irritating obstacle to Dacoillyrian commercial hegemony in the Mediterranean (see military events)...
In Carthage, an "unholy" pact has been struck; Hannibal Barcelona VI, Holy Punic Emperor of Carthage, Leo Diocomes, Imperator of DIE and most controversially Erezius I, King of Nortugal have met to discuss and sign the Imperial Pact, which invisioned a NAP, a MPP, a trade agreement and a division of the seas into three spheres of influence (Alban seas went to Nortugal, the Transpoenic and related seas went to Carthage and the Mediterranean, with its seas, became Dacoillyrian). These news immediately shook the world, angered Gaul and left the Dacoillyrian and Carthaginian people somewhat dismayed - not as much at their reconciliation, that was seen by many enough as inevitable in the light of the Padanian War, as at the inclusion of the hated Nortuguese atheists (-1 Carthaginian, Dacoillyrian Confidence). Still, this Pact's advantages clearly outweigh any disagreements; the naval league thus created could easily neutralize all other naval powers on this side of the Sile Canal. It is unclear how Gaul - probably the most obvious victim of this Pact, in the long-term - will respond to this...
The Egyptians raise the Sile Canal dues even further, with exceptions for Imperial Pact members and other allies; also, there are extraordinary heavy dues for Israfanid and Aryavartan ships. This might have lots of bad effects soon (-1 Prestige, for starters), but for now at least trade income grew greatly as the Sile Canal is pretty much irreplaceable.
The already-formidable Khoisan armies are being built up and reformed, and the Warlord's Guard has been armed to the teeth with obsolete, but still high-quality Dukunnugeyan weaponry (some claim that the pogroms against what few Aryavartan merchants and missionaries that had remained in the Khoisan Empire's land were at least part of the price). The ageing warlord Kamarera is ominously quiet; he is probably preparing for something, but what?
Several ambitious public works projects - such as the irrigation of eastern Dukunnugeya Proper - have been put into place all over Dukunnugeya, while trade boomed despite sudden Israfanid competition. The colonization and exploration efforts in Africa are going along steadily. Perhaps more noteworthy are the sudden successes of the Nevasanghist missionaries in Central Southern Africa, where entire minor tribes had converted. Meanwhile, several different Nevasanghist orders have been created.
Phoenicia, determined to achieve something in this incarnation, signed the Inter-Punic Accord with Carthage (reconciliation, NAP, trade agreement - and support for the previously-mentioned expedition to the New World) and the exotically-titled Elation of Eliat (sealed by an official Phoenician expedition to Funankor) with Khmeria (exchange of embassies, trade possibilities and tech. exchange - the Phoenicians shared the secret of Byblos Fire with Khmeria in exchange for guided kites and printing press); all that not only improved its position on the world theatre, but, along with trade and exchange of ideas occuring in general due to Phoenicia's middleman status, also helped it in a myriad ways (+Trade, +1 Confidence, Efficiency, Naval Quality, Education, Prestige). This is a much-needed boost, but it is unclear if it will be enough to see Phoenicia through.
Moshe ha-Gershom - widely-known to be the secret leader of the "Israfanid" (by now renamed back to "Israel") ruling council, the Minyan - has for some reason known only to him and YHWH introduced some highly controversial reforms, most notably reinterpreting the canonical laws as to be far less strict to pagans. As the overwhelming majority of Israeli populace follows the Urielid Judaism in any case, even the pragmatics fail to see much sense in that, and conspiracies form, striking one after another (-2 Confidence). Though Moshe ha-Gershom came out victorious in the end and even managed to prevent a civil war, these internal struggles weakened Israel considerably, especially as many high-ranking officials were assassinated or had to be executed (-1 Efficiency). Problematically, Moshe ha-Gershom pressed on with his plan as if nothing happened, and soon caused another crisis when he signed NAPs with neighbouring countries, effectively putting an end to raiding and angering a large segment of the Israeli military. His attempts to encourage commerce and foster good relations with the surrounding countries made things all the worse; he was increasingly perceived as one of the hated Mercantilists (-1 Confidence), and soon enough, a new, invincible coup d'etat occured as the remaining hard-line conservative Judges made a move to take the REAL power for themselves as well as the nominal one, in alliance with the discontent military and the angry mobs filling the streets. Having no serious support outside of Jiddah (and the newborn Israeli fleet, which hid somewhere else), Moshe ha-Gershom decided to go into the hiding for now rather than fight a hopeless battle, or so they say. However, the situation in Israel - again renamed into "Israfanidia" - remains very unstable (-1 Efficiency, Confidence) and even more than that - confusing. It seems that the tribes, the Judges and the various generals are already at each other's throats, and a REAL civil war is nigh...
The Turanese meanwhile concentrate on holding their country together, by encouraging the nobility to intermarry and by forcing the key tribal leaders to join the Khaganal household for three months each year. That causes some dissent amongst these leaders, but for the most part the system seems to work thus far.
Khmeria started a concentrated effort of combatting stagnation, introducing a wide variety of measures (Economy to Growing, +1 Education). The "Sublimity of the Southern Seas" treaty was signed with Hong Kong, involving radically-different topics such as athletic competitions, cultural exchanges and cooperation against pirates.
A Khmer expedition set up several new outposts and ports in eastern New Khmeria.
Military Events:
In a swift, completely unexpected - and a bit pointless, as some had claimed at first - military campaign, Nihonese forces crushed the various petty chiefdoms of the Hawaii, and established total control over the island chain. This campaign was at least partially redeemed when several splendid harbours were discovered in the island chain, immediately getting the attention of the merchant unions and the military alike. Already, a base had been set up at Waimomi[2]...

Despite the epidemics - or perhaps even because of them, as to preempt anyone who might take advantage of the empire's weakness - the Aztlanese pressed on with their expansionist plans. While the invasion of the Cochimi Peninsula[3] was bungled both due to the epidemics and due to the generally-awful supply situation, the Aztlanese armies still did strike north, to find weak, disunited tribes further weakened by the epidemics that don't seem to have spared any nation this time. Many Hokans submitted without a fight, and those who fought back were easily crushed. The most casualties came from the persistant diseases in the army camps and from attrition; as for territorial gains, these again were limited by the poor supply situation.
(-4 Aztlanese thousands)
Opportunities for both Aztlan and the northern Olmec feudals arise as the great Nahuan tribal confederation centered around Felitlan seems to collapse into chaos and civil war, further complicated by attacks by the more barbaric neighbours.
Minor polytheist rebellions are put down in Olmecia Proper.
(-1 Olmecia thousand)
Guangalan rebels inflict some noticeable casualties on the poorly-coordinated, demoraized troops sent to defeat them, although two years later a few rebel groups were finally isolated and defeated. Still, Guangala remains in crisis.
(-9 Guangalan thousands)
In a manner rather similar to that of the Nihonese campaign, the Carthaginians came to the Lesser Antilles, saw weak, disease-wrecked tribes and conquered them all. The Carthaginians are thus the first Old World power to get a foothold in the Carib Sea; and as news of their arrival spread, the Khuban Olmecs became increasingly paranoid... Meanwhile, the first Carthaginian colonists begun to arrive.
(-1 Carthaginian thousand)
Though in the past Brigantea and Caledonia were allies, things begun to go downhill soon after Caledonia came into being as an unified nation; basically, Brigantea stood in Caledonia's way as the latter decided to pick up some pieces from the fallen Cymru empire. Still, for various reasons, Caledonia did not invade Brigantea through the 4th Century. Yet things changed as time went; Caledonia increasingly felt itself to be a great power, and its rulers once more eyed their surroundings for expansion space. The arrogant Brigantean Druids had by 401 AD lost what little support they had in Caledonia. Perhaps even more importantly, the Caledonian leaders felt that the fanatical Iceni Empire was going to grab Brigantea soon, and thus gain an excellent forward position for an attack on Caledonia itself. Which was why Prince Mael Coluim led a great Caledonian army into Brigantea in 401 AD. Foolhardily, the Briganteans tried to fight back, but they were apparently unprepared for the contingency, and their actions were haphazard; add the Caledonian Galloglaigh with their claymores into the combination, and you get the predictable results. The Brigantean forces, including the hastily-levied militias, were utterly routed in a series of quick, yet brutal pitched battles around Caerstrean, and the Caledonians proceeded to occupy the countryside nearly-unopposed. Caerstrean itself was besieged for nearly a year, but eventually it fell too, and Prince Mael Coluim claimed a great victory, having completely broken the Brigantean resistance and brought glory and experience to the Caledonian army (+1 Army Quality, Confidence, Economy, Size; changes to Culture). Yet there are many long-term issues before Caledonia now, such as the near-inevitable clash with the Iceni (now that the only buffer state was gone) and the need to somehow integrate the proud (and indignant - the Caledonians weren't exactly gentle during or after the campaign, especially if we remember the need to "live off the land", i.e. loot for supplies) Briganteans into Caledonia...
(-5 Caledonian thousands, -2 Caledonian Galloglaigh thousands, -Brigantea as an independent nation)
The Rhenish nobles of Frankreich, outraged by being suddenly "demoted" by the perceivedly-random capital move (which also fueled their paranoia - this was seem as the first stage of an evil master plan to crush the power of the western feudals, paving the way to absolute rule for the konig), rose up in arms and levied their troops, claiming the move to be a gross violation of their rights and an act of a mad tyrant unfit to rule. Well, obviously not all of them actually rose up, but a great deal did and they seized Rhinsburg, the old capital, after some token fighting. Elsewhere resistance was tougher, and the rebels were defeated by loyalist forces at Allamen[4]; this defeat denied them the south and forced them on the defensive, but a large strip of land is in rebel hands now.

For long had proud Hellas stood in the way of Luca and DIE; ever since the Oriental War, it persistantly bugged them, and to make things worse, got away with it as well - the Dacoillyrians and the Lucans always had more pressing engagements, and also feared foreign intervention on the Hellene hands. It was concluded then that Hellas simply wasn't worth a war. This opinion has recently changed - most probably in the light of the Imperial Pact, which quite clearly untied DIE's hands in the Mediterranean. Lucans and Dacoillyrians didn't waste time; already as the Pact treaty was being signed, the armies and the fleets were being readied to destroy Hellas once and for all, to finally remove that turbulent country and to put its (rather neglected, but still very promising) harbours to use in the just cause of making DIE and its allies rich. The casus belli was the Hellene xenophobia, which had damaged the trade situation in the region. In a semblance of synchrony, the Dacoillyrians invaded Epirus, the Hellene navy was wiped out in furious, but pre-decided battles at Zacynthus and at Spetsai, a large Lucan force stormed into Macedonia and, a bit later, Lucan forces landed in Attica. The Hellenes resisted ferociously; they have been preparing for this. Yet their enemies were too strong. Though in 402 AD both Lucans and Dacoillyrians bogged down in the north, while to the south the Hellene levies and regulars, though taking huge casualties, had utterly eliminated the Lucan force attacking Attica. Yet soon after, the Hellenes had a disaster of their own when one of their best armies was caught in a classic double-envelopment at Beroea, and then was destroyed. The Lucans now poured into Thessaly, and their combined arms tactics allowed them to win battle after battle over the powerful, but not very mobile Hellene heavy infantry. After the death of Lord-Hegemon Antrocles II during the defense of Amphissa, the Hellenes did NOT surrender, but they lost coordination, and by then their back was broken. Two grim years of mopping-up followed. Hellas was finally destroyed in 405 AD, and to make sure it would never rise again, the Lucans massacred urban populations for resisting, while the Dacoillyrians enslaved and/or force-moved all the Hellenes under their jurisdiction into other parts of DIE. All the cities there are thus now in ruins or just abandoned. The casualties of the winners were far beyond any anticipations, but this still was a victory. All that is left to do is to partition Hellas properly and start repopulating it with normal people (no offense intended to any althistorical ultraxenophobic 5th century Greeks that might be reading this).

Ghana Sumbrike I launched several large-scale raids against nearby tribes of various ethnicities, although the insufficient numbers and very poor logistics prevented any terribly large Wagadou gains. Still, it was a worthwile show of force (+1 Confidence).

The HK-Khmer joint task force eliminated a few pirate bases in the South China Sea, but it doesn't seem like the local pirates were a real threat in the first place.
