The death of Leo Diocomes
Leo Diocomes would be remembered as a controversial Imperator. As a leader, he grew the Dacoillyrian Empire stronger than it had ever been. As a human being, he became more pompus, self-centered and narcastic the more power he received. He ended up screwing over many of his loyal, good friends, both on political and personal level. Carthage, Nortugal, Phoenicia.. the list goes on. Most especially, he would later be remembered as the man who threw his good friend Molonik in jail - who was better known as Merixis Molonik, "Holy Man Molonik", among the Dacoillyrian people. It was these actions that ended up in his ultimate destruction in 439 A.D, after reigning for 40 years.
It was a cold autumn night in 439 when high priest Zalmic entered his palace. Zalmic was a good friend of Imperator Leo Diocomes, and Imperator had personally appointed him (screwing thus over the council of priests) after throwing Molonik in jail over a decade earlier. Little did the Imperator know, Zalmic respected the Holy Man Molonik more than anyone else in the universe. Molonik had that kind of influence in people, he was truly touched by Zalmoxis, like the rumour goes.
He was carrying a knife that night when he entered the Imperial palace in Burebistatusa.
"Molonik has been released", said Zalmic to Leo Diocomes.
The Imperator didn't say a word. He didn't have to. He knew that instant that he had been betrayed by his closest friend. Actually he had been expecting this. His lunacy was not based on random, irrational fears, for his fears of conspiracy on the highest level of the state were true.
"Do what you must", said the Imperator after a moment of silence. He was an old, tired man, who didn't want to be afraid of conspiracies anymore. It was an easy way out for him. Zalmic hesitated a little - after all he was a man of faith and religion, with very little desire for violence - but after seeing how ready Leo Diocomes was he took the knife he was carrying and stabbed it into Leo's heart.
And so, Imperator Leo Diocomes was dead, at the age of 63, after 40 years of glorious and dreadful reign. He died childless.
It is an interresting curiosity that the council of priests offered the crown of the emperor to Zalmic. One could only assume that the council was supporting Zalmic's actions all the way, but still the offer seemed to be a surprise ever for Zalmic himself, so certain he was that the murderer of the Imperator would not be allowed to become a new one even though the law assumed the High Priest to become the new Imperator after the previous would pass away if He would die childless.
"I have no desires for the crown", said Zalmic in front of the council. "It is Molonik, not I, who is the true High Priest. He is the Holy one who most certainly deserves the crown more than me!"
So, Molonik was brought in front of the Council. The 72-year-old fragile man was shaking as he spoke: "I have had my fair share of dealing with politics. Those times are behind me now, I have no desires of becoming an Imperator, nor have I got desires to continue as the High Priest. I have seen what power does to men, I have seen my good friend Leo Diocomes turn into a monster the more power he received. I know that god Zalmoxis, to whom I place my trust and faith, would not want me to take that path. No, I will retreat to meditation for the few years I have left, to serve Zalmoxis."
It was only after these words when Zalmic, at the age of 51, finaly accepted the crown of the Imperator. But he was not as strong as the previous Imperators, for he was very loyal to the council and didn't dare to act against their will.

These events ended the Burebista-dynasty, which had been ruling Dacia for 700 and Dacoillyria for 400 years.
And as for Molonik? He was already an old man, but he would still be heard of later. After being released, he moved to Africa, where he started monasteries and thus developed the Dacoillyrian duotheism into whole new directions. This slowly developing African version of the ancient Dacian religion would later be known as Molonikism.. but that is another story.
