there has been a huge decline in posting since the split. i don't think this is coincidence.

UNITE THE OTS

Could be coincidence, for the past month, civfanatics has been running like a drunk slug. It takes about 2 minutes or more on average for a page to come up, or to make a post.

I don't like it, it killed much of the traffic in OT, and the switching between forums is annoying. But i'm starting to accept it, in the same way that someone who loses leg start to ccept that he will never play sport again.

This. I don't get why the mods are ignoring us.

I've put a protest in my sig and encourage everyone else who wants the forums unsplit to do the same.

Because we've been whining and moaning for so many years that they're sick of listening to it. :p

The whole point of the mods is to listen to the members, not form an elite society that serves to rule us.

In theory. However you really need to see both sides. The mods are volunteers. They've put their time into helping the site with no thanks. They get both worn down, and defensive, when they're constantly feeling that they are being attacked for not being good enough. On the user end, they often feel that the mods get out of touch and cliquish, because they, publicly at any rate, often stick to the party line.

My point being that this forum split came about because the staff essentially gave up on any other solution after years of argument and criticism. And now they're taking crap for this as well. It's only human that they are more than a lot fed up, and not really anxious to revisit the whole argument.

I still think the split was an attempt by the mods and admins to slowly kill off OT. Come on mods you don't need to play these games, just hit the delete button and Off-Topic will be gone for good.

Whining and meaning about what in many cases are also legitimate issues...

Its a failed idea unless the plan was to kill off OT. Activity seems pretty down, seems a lot of members were just utterly annoyed by the idea and left and never bothered to come back. I doubt they switch it back though, seems pretty clear at this point they really dont care about this section.

I don't really mind it. Well, I've never really been on here that much since the split, but it does (at least for me) make OT more interesting.

This thread should be in Site Feedback.

I don't like the split, but I'm very glad CFC exists as such a great Civ3 resource. That's what brought me here, not OT. At some point, I found OT & got lost. I don't get involved there much anymore, but I'm still addicted to lurking in OT & there are a couple of great, long-running threads I love. It's a great way to wind down after a 14 hour day at work.

Doing the split on April Fool's Day was a bad, bad move. Especially after the brilliant prank the staff pulled in 2011.

Either way, I don't care as long as the site remains committed to Civ3 content. Thanks, Thunderfall!

EDIT: It's just so odd to say "be an ass in OT Tavern, but be serious in OT Chamber." How about just following the forum rules no matter which forum? That makes more sense.

Because there are many posters on OT who have gotten very very good at being asses while technically staying within the letter of the law. It's like 50% of the complaints the mods have been dealing with the last couple years, with the other 50% being people complaining about mods who punish "trolling and flaming" too harshly.

As for the split. Initially liked it once they gave pc to the tavern, but I've been meh about it for the last two and a half months. Still meh. Don't really see any kind of difference between the two subforums, and the dropoff in activity is really depressing :(

But they must care! Else why would they have ~ a dozen staff members to moderate this section?

(mind you, about 10 of them do it so subtly, you'd never know they were around...)

It wasn't that good. There were several suggestions that were a lot better.

Just merge back OT with Tavern-style moderation as the default. Keep the Red Diamond system for those that want strict moderation of their threads and if some sort of intermediate level of chambermaiding is desired, select a thread designation symbol that is more strict than the default, but less strict than Red Diamond.

Problem with this is that even if RD threads are higher quality, they wouldn't be active enough not to fall into Page 2 and obscurity.

I have switched between being for and against the split several times. At the moment, I'll have to say that I'm in favour of the split. Even if the Chamber is not very active, it's good to have it there, like we have the World History, Sci, Art and Sports forums so that threads on those subjects which appeal to many people doesn't get drowned out by the flood of "political debates" of OT-Tavern.

The main concern seems to be the reduced activity all across the Colosseum, but I don't think that'd be necessarily solved by merging OT-Tavern and OT-Chamber (and the other Colosseum forums). I think more people are turned off by heavyhanded moderation or the abysmal quality of OT discussions than by having to check two subforums instead of one.

Sure there are. And I've done no small amount of it myself. But if much of it is legitimate, no small amount of it hasn't been. And just because it has legitimate foundations doesn't make it any less whiny when some people do too much of it.
