Poland has to go! :gripe:
They're just so annoying! The UK was never this obstructive.

Their crackpot government has been constantly attacking Russia (ok) and Germany (WTH) and they're always defying Europe over their persecution of homosexuals, failure to protect the environment and determination to return Europe to a middle ages Catholic theocracy.

The most absurd crime of all was to suggest that Poland should get more than its fair share of votes within the EU, because its population would have been bigger had it not been for the Germans killing millions of them in World War 2.

They've only been in the EU for 5 minutes, yet they've vetoed approximately 800% of EU proposals.

It's time we moved on with only those states that realise we're not in the middle ages anymore.

EU anti-death penalty day vetoed

Poland has blocked plans to hold a European day against the death penalty, the EU's Portuguese presidency says.

Poland has blocked plans to hold a European day against the death penalty, the EU's Portuguese presidency says.

It says Warsaw rejected the idea at a meeting of ministers in Brussels, arguing that any such event should also condemn abortion and euthanasia.

The EU, where the capital punishment is outlawed, had planned to mark the anti-death penalty day on 10 October.

Poland's conservative government has in the past called for a re-opening of the debate on capital punishment.

The European Commission said a conference scheduled to launch the EU day against the death penalty would still go ahead on 9 October.

But with Poland digging in its heels, delegates may find the debate is livelier than they had expected, the BBC's Alix Kroeger in Brussels says.

'Broader approach'

"Unfortunately, it was not possible to find a consensus among all the 27 [EU] member states," Portuguese Justice Minister Alberto Costa told reporters after the Brussels meeting of EU justice and interior ministers.

EU officials also confirmed that Warsaw alone objected to the move.

Polish Deputy Justice Minister Andrzej Duda said that the EU "should approach the subject in a broader way and debate the protection of life".

"The death penalty is only one element of the debate; there are more - for example, abortion and euthanasia," he said.

This is the latest in a series of political clashes between Brussels and Warsaw, on everything from homosexuality to environmental protection, our correspondent says.

She says that Poland's junior coalition partner, the ultra-conservative League of Polish Families, wants to bring back the death penalty for paedophiles.

Polish President Lech Kaczynski last year called on EU member states to reintroduce the death penalty.

Poland, along with Ireland and Malta, are the only members where abortion is illegal.

Poland's Roman Catholic clergy and politicians have described the practice of euthanasia in countries such as the Netherlands as a "culture of death".

The latest row comes as Poland prepares for early general elections on 21 October.

I don't particularly agree with Poland over their political and social positions, but they certainly have the right to keep them. If the rest of Europe does not like it, then go ahead and expel them.

Ew, Poland! Those pesky Poles need to get out of here!

I don't think they should have a right to blcok such a day.

The OP may (or not?) have been a joke, but I'm all for kicking them out. I'd like to see to whom they would turn to with their antics.

Nah, let's just have Germany annex them.

NO NO ANCHLUSSING AGAIN

if they're troublemakers, we should reduce them to observer status

ok, so u want to expel Poland from the EU, but why would u post a thread in the off topic forums knowing that most of us wont do crap about this?

I have never heard that argument before in my life.. and I'm Polish! so it can't be that widespread.. or am I just out of touch with Polish society??

What happened was this: Poland was offered a certain number of votes when she was invited into the EU. This number changed after we joined; the agreement was broken... we didn't like that. We just want what was promised in the contract we signed.

And from what I have heard, Poland has compromised and is now in agreement with the majority of the EU regarding voting power of countries and how that's determined.

Germany? Can you back this up with actual quotes?

The only thing I know of is a photoshopped picture of the German Chancellor.. with her top off. granted, it was the cover of a major polish magazine/newspaper, but the government wasn't involved.

She says that Poland's junior coalition partner, the ultra-conservative League of Polish Families, wants to bring back the death penalty for paedophiles.

This is so typically Polish in ways I can't even begin to describe.

Hey, Poland is a very conservative country, possibly the most religious country in the west outside of latin america. No wonder that it's been clashing with the more liberal west, over various issues.

You're going to have to deal with us and we're going to have to deal with you. Think of us as the crazy Bible-belt of europe... but our churches are pubs, with lots of beer, and hot girls... or something.

Observer status would just give us more of an excuse to 'observe' EU women.

"Hey.. you! What the hell do you think you're doing?" (said in response to some offensive and/or inappropriate comment/action/gesture)

"... observing"

In any case.. Poland beings in the EU, we've been an eastern shield for western civilization for hundreds of years. We helped build this "western civilization", and "europe".

Wow. Are you that unaccustomed to people having a different point of view you think they need to be kicked out? And what this insane crazy point of view that will cause such terrible harm that Poland must be kicked out for the good of all.

A silly proposal to make a EU anti-death penalty holiday. /slapshead

And then theres the fact that forcing everyone to celebrate a holiday may in its self defeat the idea of the holiday???

If that was true the EU would have drop-kicked Berlusconi's Italy to somwhere in North Africa ages ago.

The boycot of Austria over including the FPÖ in the government a couple of years ago is now recognised as a daft idea. If the EU had stuck to that the Danes could be up for sanctions as well these days.

The EU will do what it did with Berlusconi; wait for the Poles to elect some more sensible character. From what I've heard it's not as if the Polish twin-dynamic duo is overly popular with the Poles themselves anymore.

And not Britain?

The boycot of Austria over including the FPÖ in the government a couple of years ago is now recognised as a daft idea.

Daft precisely because it gave the impression that the EU did not tolerate dissent/governments that were anywhere to the right of left-center. Not to mention the impression that the EU had no compunctions about bullying its smaller member states.

that was indeed the argument they used to get more votes in the EU, totally nutty :crazyeye:
