What will you play?

I can't help but feel that the modding advances in the civ4 realm will outdo vanilla ciV by quite some margin. Consider the following mods for Civ4:

BUG and BULL - customisable interface, unit auto-naming, on-the-fly game settings customisation

Dale's Combat Mod - ranged bombardment, archer bombardment, stack attack, archer support, etc.

Revolutions - the true rise and fall of empires. I actually can't play a civ game without it, it's that good.

I can honestly forsee a great number of people sticking with Civ4, at least until ciV has had the hell modded out of it - which probably won't be until a couple of years after it's release.

Any thoughts

Well, I imagine that the general excitement about Civ V will push forward the HOF games on here and thus push forward the need for mods like BUG (with BUFFY). IMHO the more people that switch to V, the faster the mods like BUG and BULL will come out.

I will be play ciV, mainly because it will have multi-core ability. So hopefully will be able to play on a huge map and not have serious lagging between turns!

I'm hoping it will include the ideas that the modders have brought, like from revolutions. It would seem rather silly not to...

I will probably play both modded civ4 (mainly FFH and RFC) and vanilla civ5. When Rhye's, Fall, and reRhye's of Civilization and Fall from Heaven 3 come out I'll completly switch to civ 5.

With every new game, people stick with the one before that. There are sizable numbers of people that still play Civ1-3 and many will stay with four. With the amazing advances brought by our modders, even more people will stay with civ4. Despite this, the new gameplay concepts of ciV and the multi-core support will draw the majority of players to ciV. Mods will come over like RFC or will be created like FfH. The huge number of player for ciV will ensure that.

I'll keep playing Civ III with my muliplayer group, playing CivIV and FFHII when I feel like it, and give civ V a try as soon as it comes out and play it regularly. I haven't had II since I moved and lost my CD, and I very rarely play I.

The games are different enough that they are all worth playing at different times.

I won't even be installing cIV on my new machine when it arrives. Done with civ till 5 arrives. cIV was great fun, but the thought of no more boring ass stacks of doom has me so stoked I can't even think of playing this archaic version anymore.

I selected the second option, which is true, but the most descriptive predictor of my behavior is not one of the options:

"I intended to play Civ V from release, but will still play my favorite Civ IV mods from time to time."

Never got into cIV.. but ciV excites me.

The modding community will soon spring up and embrace the new game.

I would expect that vanilla Civ 5, without any mods, patches or expansions, would not be as good as a fully modded Civ 4, but I would also expect that Civ 5 would be better than Civ 4, when both are fully modded. It's a matter of how much modding Civ 5 will need to become better than a fully modded Civ 4, and that will always be a very subjective thing.

But seeing as I have Civ 4 on Mac (which means not nearly as many mods are available), and only up to Warlords, and that I plan to get Civ 5 for Windows, I'm gonna start playing Civ 5 as soon as I get it, and I'm going to try and get it ASAP.

I love my full BUG and BULL. Even so, I am not sure I'll be able to resist the allure of the new game smell.

Here's hoping Emperor Fool really likes Civ5.

Considering this is a game that we know almost nothing about, I think it's entirely way too early to make these sorts of decisions.

For the record, I thought Civ 4 blew a tricked out Civ 3 out of the water on day 1. If the core gameplay changes Civ 5 brings to the table are significant enough and good enough, I'll feel the same way about it.

I'm thoroughly done with vanilla/modded CIV. Even with some of the great mods it is still, at its core, the same game I've played countless times. I am definitely looking forward to an entirely new civilization. I'll probably be playing vanilla Civ V and CIV FFH2, although the latter may be replaced by Elemental.

:agree:

I don't play Civ4 (much) these days. I feel I have experienced what Civ4(including mods) has to offer me and run into the law of diminishing returns. If Civ5 turns out to not be good enough in the beginning, then I'll simply turn to other new games, not Civ4.

Going back after trying the next installment in a game-series have usually been a disappointment for me. The graphics feels old, the controls are annoying, the AI is outdated and some game-concepts are just so bad they kill the game after you have seen how much more elegant it can be done.
