/Agreed. You get to kickback, no stress and relax - read a book, watch a movie on yer laptop, or play a game. Go to sleep. If you need to take a dump you aren't restricted to "seatbelt sign" times. If you get peckish, a woman comes round with a large unit with food and drink and you can get yerself a beer!

Plus, you can get to the station at 12:55 and be on board and leaving by 13:05! Cannot do that with a plane ;)

Trains I love'em :P

They're quieter, there's always scenery to look at (even in towns), and the slightest problem won't send you plummeting towards the Earth destined for an explosive and fiery death, which you are forced to inevitably await!

I fly Air Galm.

I used to think like you do... then I became acquainted with what FirstGroup consider to be a 'train'.

Some unforgettable midwinter mornings shivering in an unheated noisebox surely await.

I'm 6'2'', so I voted yes. Those people make it impossible for me to put my laptop on the tray and use it.

All planes I have been on only recline a couple inches, what you are describing is not believable.

My legs are pressed against the seat when it's upright. Reclining "a couple inches" (which is an under-exagerration) makes a huge difference in leg room, and leaves hardly any tray space.

My big problem with reclining seats (I'm under 6', so the leg room isn't as cramped for me) is when the guy in front of you quickly reclines and hits your laptop on the tray table. Then, when it doesn't go down all the way, proceeds to rapidly and violently slam backwards while you are trying to extricate your laptop and tell him to lay off for a second. The plastic latch for putting the tray up broke off and my old laptop didn't fare too much better.

The problem is that they take days to make what would be a five hour flight and cost more than flying.

I may have to wait at the airport for a couple hours, but I will be at my destination days earlier.

That said, i love teh train for shorter distances when it is available and not too much more than the bus.

I don't see this as a problem, really. Hurries are overrated.

Check in early and get the emergency row. I'm six foot two and I always do this, some airlines let you book it in advance for a small fee.
I'm almost 6'4". I used to do that until I got put between two guys who were both well over 6'6" and extremely broad shouldered. Every seat was taken so I couldn't even move. I literally had zero shoulder and leg room. It was by far the worst flight I have ever taken.

Airlines in the US don't allow you to reserve that row because you must pass a visual inspection by the boarding personnel to sit in an emergency row. They want to make sure you are physically fit enough to open the door and get out of the way so everybody doesn't die in case of a crash.

My comfort takes precedence over the life of everyone else

It depends on the situation. Sometimes time is important, sometimes it isn't. I was recently given two weeks, over Christmas and New Years, to move over 2000 miles for a job. The extra time on a train was quite significant and it really wasn't an option (those two weeks had plenty of family stuff I was committed to and getting ready to start the job).

Plus, I do believe I can usually get better value out of my time at my origin or destination and the train simply did not provide anything to be worth spending more money to use it over air travel.

I thought of a new invention. A kind of specially designed wedge to prevent airplane seats from reclining. You use it on the seat in front of you during take off.

The free market will ensure this is invented. Vote no!

It already exists. You''ll be asked to stop using it or get kicked off if they see you using it and/or someone complains.

Yeah, you still have to pass the visual inspection but you can book it on some airlines.

But really the answer here is fly business class. It's brutal to fork out the cash and you know you're getting ripped, but when you board and are greeted with "Oh, Mr......please come this way, here's your champagne", and you order from a menu, well it's awesome. On long haul flights with a stopover, you can even have a proper sleep in the airline's lounge and they wake you up for your flight and have a shower.

I even got some putting practice in on the artificial green in the airport lounge at Kuala Lumpur!!
