New NESes, ideas, development, etc

I can't remember right now, do players just play one person though? Or do they play as a family? For some reason those two come into my mind, but I can't remember which one is right.

Players control a family, but they play the patriarch (or matriarch) of that family, their de facto leader.

Northern Wolf, my military section would be very similar to yours, if I only worked that specific section. Otherwise I simplified it up. Anyways great rule set overall.

I umm upgraded/improved that rule set a bit(added things removed things), so you might want to re-read... To avoid spamming editing was done on previous page.

Would this rules-set work?

As with all calculations I round up, if number that comes is 11.003 then it is 12, if number that comes is 11.0003 it's eleven. Habit from going into stores, where I'm just too lazy to calculate 1.95+5.65+34.10... (instead I use 2+6+35=43, real price is 41,7 tho.

I decided not to add military training, too many numbers. Is your ruleset out for showing, so I could see it.

Northen Wolf ;)

Anyways great rule set overall.
Thank you, for your opinion and time reading my ramble through!

Great, so it is plausible to have gunpowder in a magical world (especially if magicality is restricted to the "academic" and "priestly" population)!

More than plausible, really. Some even referred to it as magic-ish in our own reality, so in a magical one... it would be like earthy-magic? It would be as if alchemy actually worked!

If the Wei Empire series I keep touting has taught me anything, then it is that gunpowder is easy even with the resources of one monastery or of one corrupt provincial governor's amateur alchemical lab (knowing what to do helps, ofcourse). And yes, it makes for great parlour tricks especially if you use it to blow up entire buildings.

gunpower will no be making a easy entrance into my NES..

That goes without saying; you have to have someone randomly stumble upon it first, after that things become this much easier for everyone else.

I intend to wait as long as possible before getting gunpowder in N3S III. Not that this will be a problem; no one has even a vague hint of an alchemical tradition. Well, the Order of the One did have a medical tradition, so I could see them concocting it... if they hadn't just been purged and driven out of their home nation.

Actually, what's interesting is there's absolutely no hint of any kind of [pseudo] Greek rational tradition in N3S III. It's going to take a long time for science to develop in a recognizable form.

Well, I always Imagined that the Trehans are sorta Carto-Cretan mix with aa strong Anti-pirate military to support comfortable thinkers.

Or maybe that is just me.

You'd be right for the most part, but they don't really have a rationalist tradition. More Carthaginian than Greek; they tend to be merchants more than thinkers.

I assume that Farun philosophy is more like older Roman philosophy, in that it is more social than metaphysical?

I've been thinking that something like it (Greek philosophy) might yet develop in our Moti (semi-)free cities, what with the theological schools and such, but it would be some time in coming still, and even then will probably be quite different, between the organised religion and the, uh, family values. We'll see; still, it's more likely to happen there than in some other places the way things are looking now.

You'd be right for the most part, but they don't really have a rationalist tradition.

Did Minoa have a rationalist tradition? :p

Faronun philosophy is... odd. It's more like the very early developmental stages of Greek philosophy, as I see it. Iggy should probably be able to write more about it HINT HINT.

He suggested that he supported "comfortable thinkers".

Well, Faron's worldviews are, as NK notes, kind of odd- our most important 'god' is Haiao, the sun, who is the origin of life, light and happiness, and is entirely removed from human affairs. Phenomena are often explained through the Thaeraia earth spirits, Coraia water spirits, and Haiao, the air spirit. An example from my story a few weeks ago would be that lightning is caused by the Theraia Haefi, stealing a little piece of Haiao's fire and bringing it to earth, the following thunder being the angry shout of Graeo, who chases Haefi for the typical reasons that one usually chases a trickster spirit.

However, yes we do have a little bit of a rational, or at least humanist tradition, seeing as we believe that humans are for the most part masters of their fate.

That's not what I am talking about, Iggy. I am talking about those vaunted "philosophical schools" of yours; what were they, anyway?

Gosh-durnit, the biggest problem with making a prefab fantasy scenario that isn't based on existing canon is that you really have to spend time fleshing out the whole dang world. I mean, I'm doing the specifics for stuff like fashion and food for every geo-cultural-political area for a hypothetical NES that might not even be good!

If anyone likes doing that sort of thing and still has enough enough faith in me as a mod, please help?

Also, could anyone point out links to things like those for real world cultures, "life and times" types of things, particularly medieval Western Europe and Byzantium? I have stuff for Rome and Russia, which isn't enough.

---

With regards to cultural fleshing out, what does this outline for cultural-regional descriptions lack and how could it be better organized?
  • Society
    • Family
    • Fashion
    • Food
    • Typical Day
    • Leisure
    • Urban vs Rural
  • Religion and Philosophy
    • Superstitions
    • *specific religion/philosophy listing*
  • History

Maybe a description of your hypothetical world would help: But I do have access to some resources on South East Asia which might be of use.
