New NESes, ideas, development, etc

There are many gods.

There is Malla, the Craftress, Atal and Fala, the Bloody Twins who made elves, Ultn the Smith who hammered dwarves and dwemir, and Ynir the Voidfather, who dreamt all the gods and sleeps until the End. Countless others are sung of, gods of orc and goblin, gods of giant and troll.

Atal = Atalladan and Fala = Falladan?

I think it interesting that our cultures have some similarities (at least in regard to elves) about the mythology.

Yes. I mentioned a lot of other players' gods, because everyone was creating mythologies without any consideration to how they might link with those of the other players. :p And few of the human players have mentioned having a god yet, so I decided to go with the explanation that that was because the god that made humans was dead.

Thlayli, there does not need to be unity between the multiple races, within a race though, there could possibly be unity. :p

You don't understand at all.

I'm saying that 25 different creation myths with 25 different gods seriously implies that within the setting the gods are not real. Since not all of the monotheistic faiths can be correct that their god was the one that created the universe. And if the gods aren't real, they don't really matter.

By acknowledging some of each others gods in some fashion, we acknowledge some vague, but related divine tapestry which created the universe. The gods are real, not simply stories, but we differ on the interpretations. I'm obviously not calling for true theological unity between all players mythologies, not at all. What I am hoping for is more efforts at cooperation.

And why, exactly, should there be unity among races but not between races? That's an extremely arbitrary thing for you to argue. Men and elves believing in the same god, or elves worshiping different gods, is interesting.

Also, most players have looked to one god, because that's easy and familiar. By embracing a pantheon, I can reach out to other players and have connections to their mythoses, even if that connection is "Oh my, the god you worship isn't good at all, he's a bloodthirsty monster!" because that creates an interesting story.

Do you understand how that could be useful or important to the setting?

 Did I say Should? No. I did not. I said more likely.

Edit: Rage at Civfanatics... I spent 4 hours designing a culture and the page blanks out...

:badcomp:

EDIT: @Lord_Iggy- You can do whatever you want, it doesn't really matter to me. :p

At this point I am waiting until I am able to finally post the thread before I seriously consider any more cultural submissions. On that note however, going to say I approve of what Thlayli's doing whole-heartedly, and I have no complaints there. While I check in, I feel obligated to point out that at present I have no provision for ogres. I am giving serious consideration to allowing players to be trolls, given North_King's apparently definite interest in providing a high quality submission but only for trolls. :p

I originally posted a story of a sorts about page 488, and was designing it a bit different... I had alot written down to. I'll just have to pull up notepad ++ and get writing after work today.

Ogres are basically just bigger orcs so I can change that if its really a problem. The only reason I used Ogres is because its normally Ogres which run around eating people anyway.

Eh. I have an Orc idea I'm working on (when I feel better and after OSU applications and scholarships). Not sure how I feel about fungal orcs in particular.

I would like to use Yuan-ti.

The majority of the species would be female humanoid appearing (left in picture)

In any town (population ~1000) there would also be about 12-20 of the more snake-like males (right in the picture) who would primarily serve their brood mother (from whom all the others are its children) (below).

Effectively their creation myth would be based on the invasion of the ancient jeweled city of the Naga, Patala, by about a dozen elves (i'll link it with an elven mythology) led by a powerful wizard. He enslaved the naga and stole their ancient treasures and sought to build an army to expand his kingdom from Patala. He used the naga and the elves to create new soldiers, the Yuan-Ti and turned these against the Tiger-King. But the Yuan-Ti were clever and sought to overthrow the wizard's dominion. They tricked him and poisoned him, inheriting the kingdom.

They then fought the Tiger King and his minions, a war that nearly ended their existence but eventually prevailed.

I'll fill in the details considerably but I wanted to run the idea of the Yuan-Ti by you before committing to writing up their story in detail. Basically it will be filled with heroes and high-magic but not gods. The Yuan-ti will not have gods- at least none of their own.

I am particularly interested in playing a race with a distinctly ‘reptilian’ psychology underlying their social and domestic development. I am also intrigued by the idea of a nation without the idea of ‘family’, where everyone in a town is brother/sister to one another over several generations.

Most original Ogres ever: The Wheel of Time.
I dunno, I'm a big fan of the Acts of Caine grills. They might not, strictly speaking, be incredibly "original", but I think they're the best and most interesting formulation of the idea.

The ogres in the Wheel of Time are pure opposites to the rest of fantasy literature. They are a peace-loving enlightened race of beings that tends to separate themselves from the humans since humans are erratic and aggressive.

Damn Libruls you mean? Anyway if I didn't start WoT when I was a young feller I would have certainly have thrown it out in disgust now.

I just realized...is your avatar Sully from Uncharted?

if the yuan ti are reptiles why do they have boobies

Ha- i thought of that too!

I was going to have it that the egg-borne children do rely on milk during their first year or so. ...and that the community as a whole provided that nourishment.

They would also not be purely cold-blooded; more thoughts to follow if LoE allows them.
