New NESes, ideas, development, etc

mmm reboot

hmmm...I had an interesting idea. A Role Playing NES. (now I have only been on NES for a few months now and played/participated in all of 5 NESes, so if such a thing has already existed in the ~10 years that NES has existed before I came along feel free to correct me and/or link examples.)

Basically how this works is you would control an individual character or a small group of people, and you would have to do actions in a massive environment. The actions would take the place of orders. You start by creating your PC(s) and assigning stat points via a character points system (sort of like Fallout's SPECIAL system). This will end up determining the character's success level in actions. The PCs would journey through this environment. There would be combat, depending on what the environment is. There would also be quests, but these would be determined by the PC's actions and are not set in stone.

feedback?

Heh. It has been done already.

Doesn't mean it can't be done again...

I think it'd probably be best to launch a reboot instead of a BT, on the grounds that some really dumb crap happened during the NES itself that should probably be ignored.

Naw, I'm doing a BT. I reserve the right to retcon certain more ridiculous elements though, but I don't think anything too out of place happened. Leopold's little China adventure and Venice's New Zealand zooquest are the worst, and even those will just be reigned in accordingly.

Anything that really pressingly needs retcon? I've got some really good ideas for the BT, so I don't think you'll be disappointed when you see how things turn out. Spain's little mess is probably the most prominent thing that will develop, but it won't be alone.

Nice to see you back, Josef. I think I might play.

I'm sure interested parties will help you accomplish some map transfer.

Symphy has already volunteered, and shown me some map management skills on photoshop. I'll definitely be using something a lot better than the Jason map.

And as for timing, look for this to take a bit before I get it going. I'm gonna write the BT sometime this week, but stats and map might take a tad longer. I'll probably open the thread once I get things rolling.

As for the BT, it's going to be relatively short. I'm mostly going to tie up the loose ends of the 1820-1824 time, probably skipping only to about 1830 or so. Look for some new nations in the New World and some serious European tensions.

What makes me in particular worried about a BT is that I have to deal with silver's idiocy in blowing up the Byzantine Empire, and then the high probability that you no longer have my orders for the last turn and will just kinda do whatever for Byzantine policy.

also, dividing yourup into decisively hostile camps is less interesting than the more flexible alliance system possibilities offered by the original scenario

@Dachs I actually have most people's orders, keep in mind I've been inactive since the NES died :D I'll check for yours real quick and forward you them.

@Kraz There'll still be plenty of flexibility, I am not really going to constrain them any more than before. In fact, there'll be a number of new nations in the New World and a resurgent Byzantines (most likely) for things to be rather fluid and for alliances to be flexible.

woot they're kinda mediocre but better than nothing :D

fears laid to rest

Check out some of Starlife's games, he was good at exploring this type of ruleset because of his tabletop experience although I sometimes found his rules to be a bit longwinded they might have some useful ideas for such a game.

ChuckNESI: Classic Earth Fresh Start "NES Gratis NESisse"
Deadline for starting cultures: For now, Saturday October 1st, 2011

NES for the sake of NESing! Conquer for the sake of Conquering! Rule for the sake of Ruling! ChuckNESI: Classic Earth Fresh Start “NES Gratis NESisse”

Introduction: Welcome to ChuckNESI: NES Gratis NESisse, my first real NES. This will be my proof of concept, my coming to moderdom so to speak, to use all that I have learned over the years to serve YOU, the community, and give YOU a great game. Please join, and NES on!

RULES:
I will try for either 2 good updates a month, or 5 simple updates a month; Your vote in the preNES. Shorter updates will also go through time a bit slower (i.e. 150 years instead of 200, or 50 instead of 100)
Orders will be limited to 1 PM;
Medium-Longterm Contingencies, Doctrines, and any important Military and/or Espionage systems you wish me to remember over periods of time (and which you desire to be secret) can be sent in a Separate PM every few turns as I state in the update. ("OK, My files are getting full. Any nation wishing to upgrade their Contingencies/Doctrines/Secret Systems may do so via PM until date X")
Players will play as the State as a Whole (Not their culture, not as the Ruling Figure). They will be divided into “Civilized” states and barbarian “Hordes”. This has two meanings. It means, yes, your state can rebel and you can still control it, and it is possible for you to self-create a rebellion. However, it means that I will be tracking your people's viewpoints on life based on culture and your situation; if they found a nice fertile place and are willing to settle, but you push them on they might refuse and execute you. If your state has blood lust over some faux paux from the RNGod, and you ignore it they might crusade anyway. I WILL always give WARNINGS of the 'people's attitude, but I WILLNOT use Bird Jaguar's system until we get to, maybe, the Iron/Classical age and the classes get more solidifed or if your culture has a caste system.
Players will start by submitting a culture anywhere in the world with the following form: However, the farther you are from the ‘Classic Cradles’ and the more NPCs and work you force me to do, the better this form must look!
NOTE: You can always ask me to change this form as the game goes on and as cultures evolve. As long as it isn’t too radical/justified, I can allow your culture base to slowly shift over the ages.

Trigger of Civilization/Trigger of Migration
Justification (Spoilers Might be Needed)[Spoilered]

Culture Name/Player; Obvious.
Location/Spread: Location shows the birth of your culture, your homeland where people began multiplying. Spread shows initial and 'natural' migration 'tendencies' of your people as overpopulation begins to become a Factor. Please put starting locations a little separated from each other, although overlapping spreads can create interesting wars, cultural amalgamates and preNES wars.
Culture Archetype: Any Realife or Literary sources, and a little bit of what you took it from. Links may be requested. e.g. China (Family Structure), Germanic tribes (Honor based warriors) and India (Mysticism and Caste System). This will help me generalize your culture.
Culture Details: Any interesting detains of your culture you wish to share. This will spice up your culture
• Society: How do your people generally organize in power/respect?
• Lineage: How does property, titles, ect transition between generations?
• Values: What do your people hold above all else? Please limit to a few.
• Religion (s): What religion(s) does your people believe? Quick description of each religion and the kind of people they attract/of each god in a polytheistic pantheon.
• Mythos: What is their general view of how life should go? Pragmatic? Idealistic?
• Language (s): What is their language called? How would it sound? Any interesting Grammar? Will help be determine how easily cultures can mix. In addition, share some words and I can start naming the world in the new fashion.
• Economic Base: How does your people survive? How do they thrive? Please limit.
• Nation Names: By what names are your nations called? How about descriptors? “Empire” “Kingdom” ect? Are they named by location, their founder, philosophies?
• Person Names: What kind of names is your culture known for? These will be given to legendary heros, leaders, and other important people.
• Place Names: See above. How will places be named? Description-based, after important people? In addition, please name your stating location.
• NOTE: Not all of this is needed, as you can simply say in Culture Archetype to use Chinese Society-Values, Aztec Religion and Mythos, Greek Language, and then some Economic Base and greek names. However, despite our map seeming so familier, it will do us all some good to spice it up a little bit.

IMPORTANT!!! THIS WILL DETERMINE HOW I WILL TREAT YOUR CULTURE IN THE PRENES
Trigger of Civilization/Migration: These triggers are what pushed your culture around the final lap to civilization, culture, law on one hand, or migration, common purpose and ‘barbarian horde’ on the other hand in the PreNES. Factors might be the migration of another culture, an ancient, unified state, a powerful religion, warfare, and other events which would as definitively as possible mark the transition between a group of farming, cultured towns and powerful states bent on expansion, trade, or unification.
Justification: While Classical Cradles need almost no justification, and nearby lands such as Mediterranean, Iran and inner India, Peru and such need only little; the further you go from the classic cradles, the more justification you must give for the growth of isolated or nearly isolated civilizations. Although I will always allow players play, and indeed, will allow NPC cultures created by players to flourish in the background, I WILL penalize a culture in northern Norway created there “to pillage and plunder” while there are no other nearby cultures in the Baltic, or even the entire Northern European area. (If there is, the penalization will be less, and the player will almost need to manage such a state like a horde).

Finally, we will start in a PreNES which will provide a quick background sketch for the main NES. It will start at the end of the Ice Age, and first go a couple thousand years, then a thousand years at a time, until we arrive at near-OTL 3000 B.C. at the edge of the Copper Age (Most nations will start Neolithic at the actual NES). Sophisticated stone tools and crude Copper ones are being used by various civilizations. This will play as a BT while I organize the main NES. Also, there is no need for orders during the preNES, but if you want to change your culture basis while it is still flexable, you certainly can. All the preNES is going to do is to establish a background for the actual NES based on the culture stats. This will take a few weeks/months as I prepare for the main NES.

Also, if there are less than 12 cultures by October 1, I will cut out any American cultures and allow a week for them to edit their submitted culture.

This NES started in part due to Xen’s eagerness for a Classic Earth Fresh Start, starting in the stone age, like the good ‘ol times; I thank Xen for his eagerness for helping be get started. I also thank Abaddon, erez and others for the support. For the rules I thank North King for the pillaged Culture Description section, as well as all moderators for slowly tweaking the rules and brining me ever more hours of exasperated studying, hoping to find the best ruleset.. :p

Checklist
Clear my PM Box
Gather a startling list of Cultures and Players

Find the Will to go at least the 15 updates to the first BT spot.

VOTING
Classic 3 Cities System or Return to our Roots system?
3 Cities uses Economic, Cultural and Religious special cities to give boasts and show important areas/cities. Return to our Roots/Modern system uses specialized projects as the main engine for growth.
Just EP, or Specialized
Do you guys just want EP, or do you guys want Industrial, Agricultural, Trade EP, or maybe Gold/Agriculture/Manufactured?
Tech Tree; None, Thin, Tree, Bush; Other, Yes or No
None: No techs. No Ages. I will tell players if your nation happen to develop new metals.
Thin: Age techs, copper age, Bronze age, ect.
Tree: Age Techs as well as a tree for players to work with.
Bush: Lots and Lots of Techs, to the point that they provide most economic growth over Projects.
Other Techs: Specialized designed techs like Amon's system; You can try for stirrups, special alloys, ect and I will roll a die based on plausability and investment and they can give bonuses. Yes or No
Quick Updates or Slow Updates
If I do RTOR style quick updates, I can do up to even 8 updates a month and I can reduce the time each update covers. If I do more traditional updates, I can only do 4 or even 2 updates a month, although I would have more control and each update will cover a longer period of time.
preNES Thread or "Just Post the NES thread Already!"
Exactly what it says on the tin. I will post one or the other when a choice gets 5 votes. Don't vote if you don't want me to get the ball rolling yet.

ACCEPTING CULTURE RESERVATIONS NOW! AEGEAN AREA ALREADY CALLED BY XEN

There will be, but I write better when there is a flow at the back of my mind.

EDIT: This has been up for a couple days in the other thread already. You can always just join in later after 'The Fake Countries' pop up and take something. ;).
