New NESes, ideas, development, etc

You know, a Mortal Engines NES would be really interesting.

As an avid reader of Mortal Engines, I rather enjoyed the Traction Cities series, and briefly considered it as an idea for a Never Ending Story, but could not think of how to successfully structure and run it. What sort of ideas would you have in mind for it, thomas?

Well, as is evidenced by my Checkered past, I have no continuing motivation to actually run a NES.

But! the way I'd do it is, obviously, Players playing as Traction Cities, need to hunt smaller cities for resources (Perhaps have fuel be a part of the stats) as well as send out parties to hunt for Prewar relics. IDK, it's just an idea that popped into my head.

It's a good idea and an interesting one; would have to work on it for a bit before making it, but it would be very interesting to say the least. Especially if set after the rise of the Green Storm and such. :)

I think having the Greenstorm puts too much of a Time limit to the NES. I would probably set it much earlier, very early in the age of the traction cities.

Hmm, would be a lot more interesting, more of an excuse to have more cities blundering about as well. Will have to brush up on the novels, it's been years since I've read Mortal Engines and the others in the series.

Yeah, me neither. I'd run this, but I feel like I'd just end up giving up on it an update or two in, as the work builds up. :p

A Mortal Engines NES would be awesome. I wish I could have had the idea just to claim credit for it, TBH. :p

Here's a question for you guys; when modding, do you guys prefer to calculate battle results by hand or by a computer program?

I ran KhaNESI by hand, and I'm currently in the process of writing a battle program for KhaNESII in C++ (which is coming out weird, casualties still aren't working.)

What do you guys do? I know Crezth has his CNES which is basically all automated, but I was wondering what other mods do.

I have yet to try it out, short of bug testing, but I've programmed a simple "skirmish" calculator in python. Ships form each side, bonuses, and out comes victor and casulaties. What I'm planning to do is use it multiple times in one battle, depending on tactics involved, and do the overreacking strategy by hand. So bob's flank attacks alice's center, plus 4 for bob's flank. I'm hoping it will allow tactical flexibility while keeping things sane. Not sure if that's what you have in mind for your program, or greater automation.

It would be a relatively awesome NES, and I'm open for it in a version with multiple mods (given that sometimes one mod may be overburdened and decide to duck out for the sake of relieving stress for a few weeks), and working on it would be very nice to say the least. :)

Spoiler :
Look what I found!!!

Going by table one, an available force of 5000 militia would mean the backing of about 42,000 people.

The only thing which I see can be changed is allowing professionals to fight in the standard militia, which will hurt more overall as it takes a lifetime (apprenticeship/castes) to train.

Of course, this is medieval. However, going by the easier definition that half (instead of an eighth) of the men are able bodied, a 5000 militia group, if accounting for ALL the able-bodied men, would still relate to a 20,000 people supporting population. This group can certainly campaign in the Summer or Late Fall without affecting harvest too much.

If the biggest cities+population are about 10k at this time, the max able-bodied militia by 25% would be 2500 men. By his percentage of 12.125% it would be just 1200 men.

Ergo, if we want to go with 10K populations and his calculations, our max men size is 1200 of'em. If we go with half the men are able, then we have 2500 of'em. If we take ALL males, form baby bob to teenage tom to grandpa jerry, then and only then we get our quite common amount of 5000 men.

INFODUMP.

Will be reposted in Nes NESes for the benefit of posterity. This took 20 minutes of searching and calculations to find.
Interesting stuff here.

On the subject of the Mortal Engines NES idea, would you control merely one traction city, a group of them, and anti-traction cities as well?

Cool. I look forward to seeing what you do.

The map would be interesting as well... After the 60 minute war, there are references to Central America no longer existing, and new mountain chains being drawn up

@lord_joakim
cc: everyone

What is this ljNES0? Have I missed something? Has it been in the works since time immemorial? Or is it just a plunge into uncharted waters?

Could you please help a guy out, and explain ljNES0 to me? Many thanks.

lj always has been and forever will be.

lj's NESes have always been odd. They're strange and surreal, and usually very creative/cracked out. :)

The map is indisputably the hardest part of any attempt at a Mortal Engines NES, so I'm going to see if I can find one elsewhere online given that any attempt that I might have to draw a map will end in rather bad events (i.e., absolutely crummy map in any way imaginable). Hopefully I can find one here if I look hard enough.
