New NESes, ideas, development, etc

Well, traditional NESes are more than just pure military slugfests. I have come to notice that tournament NESes have a fairly high failure rate... they're often quite solipsistic, with people having little reason to interact with each other except when they're trying to kill one another.

Well really, the idea was always more of a story writing competition and collaborative world building effort than anything else. "Closer" to NESing is of course not the same thing as "close".

I remember a "Tournament NES" where each player leads an army.

Really, 3 things slow/stop a tournament NES. Players are slow/delayed/late in writing stories. Judges are slow/delayed/late in judging stories. And in general, there is no urgency.

A Tournament NES running sustainably every 2 weeks, secure cut offs, weeklong judging where stories can "backfill" inter-tournament relationships

Lucky, if you read this thread, you should resurrect your superhero NES. I would have loved that.

Anyway, I'm still pushing for a personal NES. I can't get enough of making characters. Still, I don't know what my next person will be. Probably energy manipulation or teleportation. Maybe shadow walking. Maybe animation. Maybe time powers. Maybe shape shifting. Maybe illusions. Maybe super speed. So many choices!

Agreed. A real schedule must be kept, and the players must be willing to flesh out their world between rounds. Though it isn't the same, the closest analogy is a player in a NES who only sends his orders and does nothing else.

The moderator should also be a major part of the storytelling, and build a rich and compelling backdrop for the tournament.

In the last Tournament, I kept around a few "side" characters/fun characters (who were hosting a radio show) whom I intend to interact with my "main" character after round two. Their shenanigans were fun to write.

EDIT: What about a slow-paced tournament with hard deadline, with plenty of background events a player can choose to or not to interact with. Also, an emphasis on character development would make developing relationships more important, especially if they had to fight a friend or on a mission with someone they disliked.

I have really loved the superhero NESes. The SCP NES was also very fun. They work a lot better than tournament NESes, IMHO, as they do not have defined victory states, instead serving as more of a sandbox. I'm not entirely sure what the exact definition of a NES should be, but I'm pretty sure that being open ended tends to be an important part of it.

Agreed. Tournament never get anywhere with character development because your character could die tomorrow and all your work would be for nothing. At least that's how I feel.

While I agree that tournaments are a bit of a departure from traditional NESing and should not be run too often, I disagree about character development. We've seen plenty of evidence to the contrary, and that is in fact the point of the thing to begin with.

As usual, the mod and the players have much more to do with the quality than the format.

Travel back in time, and then the players must try to find out when and where and how to come back. It would be CFC.Com style

I'm thinking of starting a Superhero NES on the side if LuckyNES declines my offer (which I'm sure he will).

Please do. Heck, if you need help running it, I'll gladly step up to the plate.

I would love another superhero NES :P

I do need help. My other NES is a hassle, so that would be appreciated. Plus, it means I could play if we just wrote each other's part of the update!

Kaiser, do you have an AIM?

No, but I have a Chatango account, so maybe we could use that? Come to think of it, I think you might have a Chatango account too. :p

I don't, but I use it as a guest. Maybe just use an AC chat room? How about the one for Lighthearter's ACs?

We can use my own chatroom, I'll send you the link.
