New NESes, ideas, development, etc

I'm only going to be able to force myself to find time for this forum if someone starts another Alternative History experiment. ;)

So, I've been working on a new fresh start NES map and have gotten far enough to probably be able to be able to open the NES some time before New Year's, probably. Thank you for the offer of help, NK; I'll take you up if I need it.

Also, does anyone know of a good, free image editor for Mac (ideally one that supports layers)? Right now, I'm using a trial version of Photoshop, but the trial will run out in twenty-odd days.

Don't know if any of these are Mac or not sorry

GRAPHICS
  • GIMP for Windows - An open source graphics editing program
  • Google's Picasa - Easy to use and has simple image editing abilities.
  • ScreenPrint 32 - Replacement for PrtScrn - Allows capture to clipboard, as well as printer and/or file.
  • Irfanview - Very lightweight, small, and fast image viewer that supports over 30 image formate. Remember though, viewer, not editor. Even though it can resize and do some very basic editing, it's really best used just as your default viewer. Make sure to also download the plugin pack.
  • Paint.NET - an image and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7 or Server 2003. It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools.
  • FastStone - A great free photo viewer / lightweight editor.
  • ImageWalker - allows you to manage your image files visually
  • ShellExtension - A Handy program that adds the option to "convert" or "print" your image files with a right click in Windows explorer.
  • XnView - efficient multimedia viewer, browser and converter.
  • PrintKey - Allows you to capture the entire screen or any portion of it, then make changes to the screen capture and save in a variety of formats.
  • Blender - Open Source 3D-Modeling/Graphics program.
  • Inkscape - A free Vector based graphics editor.
  • Scribus - Page layout software.
  • ImageJ - Java-based image editor, viewer and processor.

I would note that the maps of Carmen's NES and Ninja Dude's NES are both part of the same world map that was created by myself, and there is one cradle that has not yet been used... :)

Gimp has instructions for its use with Macs.

Gimp supports layers.

Thanks! Annoying to start up because it needs a Windows emulator, which takes forever to load, but I did get it to work. Gimp is much improved since the last time I tried to use it (probably four years ago now).

Anyway, I'm mostly finished with the continent of the cradle, which is completion enough to probably open a preview for the NES tomorrow or the next day. I may need some advice on a climate map, though. Stay tuned!

Flyingchicken may be interested in this, but my combat model for a certain NES is pretty damn close to completion.

Others will just not understand what I'm talking about.

Here's the map for my upcoming EskimoNES.

I forgot to put in a scale. That bottom peninsula is like 100 km long.

I like the W-T one. The Fuller one looks like a LSD Trip.
