No bread? It's okay, we can still have circuses

Doesn't the queen already have several boats?
Also, what is the education secretary doing talking about a new boat for an unelected german theocrat?

Calling the Queen a German theocrat is about as accurate as calling all Americans Georgian revolutionaries!

Except that 'New Labour' is like the U.S. Democrats, it's only considered a 'left-wing' party because the other ones are farther right.

Less far out right, you mean.

So we get a nutcase like Salmond trying to tear apart the country? No thanks.

The LibDems are certainly further left than New Labour.
They used to be, but they took a firm turn to the right when the Orange Book faction took over after they botched the 2005 election. At this point they're probably, on average, about as far left/right as Labour, just in different respects (which incidentally shows how limited that terminology actually is these days).

That's a bit much. I know the Shetlanders don't like him, but I don't think they'll actually try anything about. He'll just have to make sure that they keep getting their oil subsidies and they'll calm down eventually.

:mischief:

It's really funny what non-Brits want to do with the British monarchy when at least 70% of Brits actually like spending their 62p for the Monarchy. It's silly to think that there is no popular mandate behind backing the Monarchy. If there wasn't, the monarchy would have been abolished a long time ago.

Just because Britain is in austerity measures doesn't mean they can't celebrate. No one canceled Christmas during the war.

And frankly, the Queen deserves her new yatch, given how much she does for the country.

Lee Kuan Yew should get this, then. He deserves it, no, given how much he has done for his country?

He ain't King is he? Is the yacht used for Official State purposes? Especially in conjunction with Foreign Affairs. HMY made 700 foreign trips.
HMY Britannia was formally run and owned by the Royal Navy, not the personal belonging of the Queen or Monarchy.

I wouldn't object to a Presidential yacht if Singapore used it to entertain foreign diplomats in foreign ports.
Plus that yacht is really tacky and far to extravagant.

Lee Kuan Yew is more powerful in Singapore than the Queen of England is Britain. So, yeah. He totally deserves a big ass yacht. Nobody said it has to be official.

So you're saying that not having a yacht interferes with the Queen's ability to perform her duties? That's seems more like an argument for Republicanism.

And of what use would that be?

Wha? There is a good argument for commissioning a yacht for the Queen's use. There isn't for Lee Kuan Yew. It's not about power, it's about function in state use. I would not agree if the British taxpayers were just giving the Queen a yacht for her pleasure use.

Having a yacht definitely improves the ability of the Queen to perform her duties. Warming foreign relations is all about the fanfare and impressions. Nothing says fancy like the Queen descending from her Royal yacht.

And of what use would that be?

Like Nixon visiting China.

Don't ask me. You brought up the fact that Lee Kuan Yew is not King as though it was relevant, and kingship is a political position and politics is about power.

But she does fine without one. I mean, the whole point, according to you, is that having the monarchy is a net benefit for the UK. If the Queen really does need a yacht to perform her duties, then that would reduce the net benefit of the monarchy.

Uh... Huh?
