None Shall Pass [Game Thread - Concluded]

- writeups
I enjoy most of the write-ups. :goodjob:
- split town
I'm not really into split towns. Sort of makes the mafia/cult in the "grey", as it were. But this was the best split town game I've ever played, because of the way you handled the war. It gave both sides a chance.
- general hosting
I'd say you are one of the best hosts there are.
- combination of LOTR and Star Wars
I like them both, but I'd like a total LOTR mafia, too. (Sequel of LOTR Mafia, please. :p)
- game mechanics
I liked the way you could upgrade your ability.

I would've liked it more if I had one though...
Just kidding, somebody's gotta do nothin' at night. ;)

About the debate on how much information the towns should receive, I actually like the fact that townies don't know much about the game mechanics (one of the best parts of Zack games for me), as it

1: Gives scum an ability to fake claims and create paranoia (Zack, a lot of your early clarifications were misplaced IMO since they prevented the paranoia generated by incomplete information from occurring and being exploited to its fullest extent)

2: Leads to many interesting mid-game surprises, like the Balrog

So I disagree with the claim that players should know if
one side is a "recruiting mafia"
. Players should be given information as necessary for game balance, and no more. Mafia is a game of mis-information, after all. The same, IMO, is true for ability upgrades. If I knew my ability upgraded, I would have used it much earlier and would have been OP as a result

I’m not sure if I’m speaking from bias here, but whilst I totally support people having stuff to do at night, having an ability such as mine (which only worked on one person) may well just have made your life difficult, Zack. I started at 1/33, which eventually climbed to 1/6 after nearly three weeks, and then Sam was killed off and it was unusable. It also made talking about it really difficult, as it could potentially have been really powerful, and I spent most of the game thinking that the LotR Mafia were mostly Nazgûl, thus giving me false assumptions about its applicability.

I’m sure that the power (I Am No Man, if anyone is interested) was easy to resolve, but it did rather feel like “ability filler” a lot of the time.

Any feedback for the sequel? Especially about:

- writeups

- split town

- general hosting

- combination of LOTR and Star Wars

- game mechanics

Writeups? Fine. Nothing wrong with them.

Split Town? This I do have an issue with in that, the only split town I've ever seen that actually sorta worked as intended was Autolycus's NOTW and Jarrema's Academy of Magic. Its not particularly balanced as a rule and having them direct enemies doesn't help either. Especially with a cult game.

General hosting? Fine, maybe a few too many clarifying comments in the thread.

LOTR-SW? Fine.

Game Mechanics? Unlimited recruitment is not fun injuries are okay I suppose, roleblockers on one side heavily annoying.

Just a quick LOLTAKHISIS for not even attempting to kill Choxorn. We never had any protection on him ever.

Wasn't really a fan of the split town, it pretty much turned half the game into a massive Prisoner's Dilemma type situation, which can be interesting but it's not really what I'm playing mafia for.

Hmmm, yes, I agree with the claim that you overexplained some things and left us with no room for ambiguity, Zack.

@Visorslash: sod off, I was busy doing other things!

Normally I try to write up a lot of my thoughts at the end of the game on the balance but I died pretty early on and things looked pretty decent to me.

Split town is fine in my opinion (my games have had split stuff) and it's good every once in a while; I'm glad that the balance was done right this game. There was good prevention of snowballing (although if takhisis was lynched day 2 that would snowball, but not much moreso than any other mafia game if the "powerful" head honcho just dies). Sometimes that's how a game turns out.

hosting was fine, all I care about is being on time and open

 I thought it worked really well in this case, especially in balancing the game. And I seemed to remember it NOT working very well in Only the Strong.

Two biggest criticisms are that I wasn't open enough and that I was too open.

Sequel won't have cults. Gandalf was the LOTR roleblocker - he could block all kills in one night, and if healed afterwards could block all night actions other than those taken by the LOTR Town. Plus the SW roleblockers were limited and were both converted and lost their blocking powers anyways.

Also, where is the Star Wars Cult? I don't think I've seen a single member of the Fab Four join in the post-game discussion, not even the guy with twice as many posts as anyone else. :p

Maybe it's because a lot of questions and discussions were already addressed in the long Dead QT?

One last thing - I'll try to post the sequel hook and Role PMs when I can, but I'm busy procrastinating studying for finals at the moment.

...not even the guy with twice as many posts as anyone else. :p

So, what are Spaceman, Visorslash and myself? Chopped Cheddar? :)

- writeups
No complaints here. They were amusing and didn't reveal too much information

- split town
IMO this was done well, and created interesting opportunities for inter-faction conflict and alliances

- general hosting

Aside from the early clarifications (which squandered a good opportunity for scum to manipulate the thread due to misinformed townies including myself), the hosting was excellent, and the game was well balanced

- combination of LOTR and Star Wars
No complaints here

- game mechanics

I thought the Cheddar were the ones from the Galaxy Battles set, y'know, your enemies?

Just curious, which NotW of mine, Only the Strong or Return of the Baron? Both had split towns, although Only the Strong's was much more split :)
