On Intellectual Participation

Why do you NOT participate in developing specific NESes or NES concepts in general?

could have been better spent studying for my AP US History Exam (want to get a 5 for sure) not to mention my other examinations.
That thing is free money, especially if you spend any appreciable amount of time here.
I try to reserve my comments to discussions to which I think I can effectively contribute (as opposed to just talking)
That, for me, is one of the two big things that prevent me from posting more often; I frequently don't really feel as though I have an appropriate depth of knowledge to permit discussion. At the same time, I'm too apathetic to really care about the rules system so long as it's not too terrible, and am willing to work within the bounds of most crappy rulesets if I think the concept is an okay one. This sort of stifles contribution as well.

1) My concerns have been raised/addressed elsewhere
2) Lack of knowledge about discussion topic: Do we really need one more uniformed opinion? Granted, I could do research and come back but…
3) Lack of time: I have a limited amount of time and I would rather spend it writing stories and working on my own projects.
4) I don’t have a solution: I think most people already have at least a vague idea of what is wrong, the problem is solving what is wrong. If I feel I have a solution, I’ll post something, but otherwise, I just keep silent.

I do participate, but not quite as much as I would like to due to time.

I am quite new but I think for my experience I participate quite a lot (meaning that I sometimes feel a bit like "shut up noob" towards myself :p) and act like a know-it-all

I think I do participate, though maybe still not as much as I ought to... Unfortunately, I have started to lose interest in NESing as a whole.

I don't participate in the discussions because most of the stuff you talk about is either incredibly unimportant or way over my head.

Sane here. Also, I feel like I don't really know much about the development process, as I haven't run an NES yet (though I do plan on starting one sometime in the moderate future).

1. I voted "Other:"
- I'm actually planning to start a NES with a pretty different ruleset that IMO would be as good or even better than the current one, although some disagree. But:
- I'm lazy. I'm currently trying to make myself turn my horrible alt-hist into something more decent, but it's not working since every time I get on wiki I find myself reading about random Burmese politicians. Once I manage to do that, I'll probably make a map and actually write my ruleset down, but without an interesting setting any NES is doomed.

2. I'd like to request that I be taken off the list of GuideNES posters since most of my posts in there are spammy-ish.

3.
2. I really am intimidated. This is because I don't really know my history like you guys. In fact I am done with history for the rest of my high school career as of now, because the History IB/SL test concluded yesterday afternoon at 4:30 PM, PST.
I can envision Symphony telling me that it's not hard to go look things up on Wikipedia, and in fact I agree. However, my response is this: I already do! It's just that some time periods just don't interest me, or I don't know things well enough in depth (and Wikipedia doesn't really cover it either).
As sad as this may be (the "go read wiki" thing), this is often true. However, IMO, you don't need to know much about actual history to be able to make an alt-hist, or even predict what will eventually happen to a country: you just need to know the basic patterns of history (e.g. food surplus = cities = specialists = scientific/cultural achievements, etc. or diversity = conflict = weak but advanced peoples/regions/countries + ceasefire = strong-ish and advanced peoples = how Europe took over the world). Knowing these patterns (and some military strategies + psychology [e.g: in ABNW, I knew that a third attempt to take Vienna would utterly fail {reason why I did it anyway is because my mom was poking me and telling me to hurry up and go to bed because I need 15 hours of sleep per night}]) is what makes a NESer/mod good.

4. My name (qoou: turn it upside down) is misspelled on the front page.

Honestly, I'm not really expecting for it to do well either. It'll probably end up being me realising that it is in fact the really hard task everyone says it is, causing me to not go near modding for about two years.

I critique rulesets, etc. that interest me--however, I don't tend to participate in alt-hist discussion because I don't really know enough about the period and don't care enough to learn. I didn't participate in GuideNES because I really don't have the time to deal with a newbie buddy.

I'm in GuideNES, but just as a shining example as opposed to a newbie helper :p

I am busy, lazy and intimidated.

I finish work and I don't really want to devote alot of time to something especially when it involves alot of thinking, It will be like work except harder because I don't need to think at work.
When you all start discussing rules I'm like what the . .. .. .. . are you talking about, goes right over my head. Don't spend as much time here as I used too, not even in my week off, doing other stuff.

I do participate, when I can. If I don't voice an opinion it is generally because I believe myself to be uninformed. And that isn't very often, regardless of whether or not I actually am informed or not. :p

I voted busy because that is the primary reason I don’t participate. Bosses don’t like you playing at work. Families expect you to turn of the computer and do things with them. Apathetic and intimidated were closes seconds. Usually when I get around to viewing some of these other threads, the conversation has died out or the issue settled. I don’t want to comment and restart and argument that I most likely won’t get back to for 24-48 hours

Intersting Sym. It seems that the 80/20 rule applies here too. 20% of the participants/members/workers/etc. do the heavy lifting. That is not a bad thing. I participate more when I'm not modding. I also use my game threads for ongoing development. In general, I do not comment on games that do not interest me, so when folks post previews on sci fi or warhammer etc., I generally ignore them.

I do read what folks say in development threads and then steal all the good stuff for my games. The ideas posted are prolific and exceptional, far too many to find ways to use. I think that in the past couple of years you guys have been very creative and tried all kinds of great ways to play games. It is all about trial and error and the efforts have been grand and failures have been instructional. Sym, das, NK, Iggy, Luckymoose and the rest of you not listed have pushed the envelop in all kinds of interesting directions. :hatsoff:

I need an all of the above or multiple option so I can correctly categorize myself in your system.
