Random Rants #88: [incoherent screaming]

Rant: Sometimes fitting games onto my small SSD feels a bit like a Tetris game. Well, if I remove this game and that game, I can fit this other game, but then I'll have to remove this other game if I want to play that game I removed....

I think that the overall tone of those forum would improve if people made more liberal use of the "ignore" feature.

I think the mistake people make is that blocking somebody is an aggressive gesture, a "take that!", and they understandably want to moderate their use of that. But I think that blocking people can also be an act of self-restraint: if you know that somebody gets under your skin, the mature thing to do is simply ignore them, and if you can't reliably do that yourself, then letting the site do it for you is an acceptable alternative.

In 19 years years here I have never "ignored" anyone. Seems like a pretty useless gesture.

You don't need to tell them that you put them on ignore. In fact, CFC doesn't allow that. I've been in other forums where masses of people would put someone on ignore as punishment. But as a sanity feature, I quite like it. I have about 11 people on ignore just because their posting style or habits are grating. And about 4 people because they're tiring. I've dabbled in using it as a punishment, but I need to rebuild my CFC status before that's really at all useful.

I don't block people because blocking them doesn't stop the people I haven't blocked from responding to them, and thus the only way I can know what the hell is going on is to reveal the ignored posts, defeating the whole point.

This is exactly my problem with the ignore feature.

Yes but if someone you are ignoring asks you a question and you don't respond to that and respond to all the other questions it's pretty obvious.

Rant: Downloading a 20 gb game at 5 megabytes a second....is not fun.

EDIT: Now it's around 500 kb/s. I think Steam hates me.

Is that really illegal in Canada? That's kinda standard here in the US. Landlords are free to make their own contracts with ISPs and block out other providers. I learned this back when I was renting an apartment and tried to get better internet and the better provider said they couldn't provide service because our landlord already had a contract with the crappier provider.

There was a CRTC thing about it. In Ontario an ISP called Beanfield wanted access to a building but they weren't allowed in so they went to the CRTC which made the owners of the building let them in:

I seem to recall something about this. For a country that so prizes individual liberties, you sure like to restrict what individuals can enjoy them.

The US believes, since the days of slavery, in the right to personal freedom even over that of others. Even the freedom to curtail that of others.

*leans down from high status pedestal*
It's completely useless as a punishment. You can't mention that you've put someone on ignore and if you do, you're just as likely to get them doubling-down on their behavior than changing it.

Rant: I have time to post and no one his here.

Also I have to change a bike tire. :(

As soon as Candice touched the Petro-Canada facility, she was able to morph into a multi-billion dollar oil and gas company, and the federal government eagerly courted her with subsidies, bursaries, and grants to “help her through this difficult time.” And help her they did – after years of precarious income, Candice was finally able to make rent, buy groceries, and hide millions of dollars in offshore accounts.
