Random Rants LXIV: Who's Acting Like a Child Now?

I went from sheer joy to feeling like a sack of crap in the span of about five minutes tonight. I got an email from a job I applied for saying they are ready to move forward with my candidacy for the position. It's a job I really want so that's where the sheer joy comes in. However, upon reading up on it some more, I found that while they are interested in me now, they probably won't be once I complete the next step. Let's just say I made a few mistakes in the past, and those mistakes are specifically the things that will disqualify me from this position once they find out about them.

So what do I do? Do I just withdraw my application for the position? Or do I go forward with it and hope they are so desperate to hire someone that they overlook those past mistakes?

Consider coming clean and telling them about it yourself. Your honesty might save you and, even if you don't get the job, it won't be a bad reference.

Well I planned on being honest. The thing is, once I tell them about those mistakes, they are supposed to be automatic disqualifiers, even if the hiring manager is willing to overlook them.

My computer power cord has worked very inconsistently for the past few weeks. I have to keep adjusting it to maintain power. A few times my batter had gotten low enough (despite being plugged in) that it interrupts me every few seconds with low batter warnings and notifications about being plugged/unplugged.

The insulation on the wire part has separated from the plastic part around the plus a bit, which made me think it was starting to fray and I'd need a new cord. I found that my sister's old laptop's cord, which looks intact and seems to fit the socket just as well, also has the issue. I'm afraid it could be an issue with the power connector inside the computer. I don't know how much that would cost to fix.

I did get my first paycheck on Saturday, but it was only half of what I was owed for the work on my first timesheet. The general contractor said he was not paid in full yet so he can't pay the subcontractors in full yet either. Since I have been spending money on my flooring project and have to pay for my gas and insurance now, I'm not left with much to spare.

The flooring project is frustrating. Nothing in the room is perfectly straight, so I'm not sure where to snap the lines to make sure the boards are aligned properly. I is also difficult for one person to do without assistants.

My sister hasn't been feeling well lately and is not in a mood to help. She just got fired from her job tonight (or rather they decided not to renew her contract), so she should have more time for this project if her allergies get a little better.

Try anyway, always, right? can you interface with a live human?

Sex advice thread is that way, Hygro ------>

If you're going to be disqualified, then be honest about it and save everyone -including yourself- some grief.

There's a sex advice thread?

mildly related rant: I'm growing fond of someone but can't seem to make a move.

Yes, getting drunk together was at the top of my idea list :p

Eheh I didn't realize this was the rants thread. Never mind.

yay hail, high winds, and heavy rain

Saturday night I got really drunk. Went from wine --> vodka --> beer. I didn't finish the last bottle of beer and set it on my nightstand before I basically passed out in bed. I woke up in the middle of the night obscenely thirsty, so I reached over for my water bottle and started chugging, only to realize from the absolutely foul taste that I had accidentally grabbed the beer that had now been sitting in my 88F degree room for hours (I don't have A/C). I don't want to smell or taste beer again for awhile.

Some people on discord group forgot about my gender and told me to be more assertive and man up. That' s what I get for playing computer games whose main target audience are men.

I don't want special treatment, but I want them to understand that it is ok to be shy and unassertive for someone who is not male.

I guess there is no way out - either you are "one of the boys" or you are a dumb chick. It takes maturity to realise there is a middle way, but I can't ask that much from 18-35 aged people who are gamers and have been in male enviroment for most of their online lives.

That's a pretty ironic thing to say on this site. But whateves I'm a little too old to be in that group so I can't even pretend to be personally offended, but at the same time... bemoaning a lack of understanding and civility online and then responding by insulting/blaming the maturity of 18-35 y/o males on a site populated by... well... you get the idea;)

That doesn't really have to be gender-specific. You can be unassertive or assertive regardless of your gender.

Erm, I'm pretty sure that people who play strategic games are different than those who play FPS.

Another thing - yes, I believe that many people on OT have started their Civ ways with Civ 1 or Civ 2, so they aren't even close to that.

Third - "I can't ask that much" isn't an insult, it' s a personal experience. i especially joined the said discord, because it is a 18+ discord for supposedly more mature people than average on CSGO, but I keep running into people with low empathy.

@choxorn

Of course, but that is the next level kinda.
