Thanks guys. You don't know how much it means to have people giving me internet love. It's been a rough 6 months for me but things are finally turning around.
The position I'm applying for is actually a bit of a dream job. They want a technical writer with an AE degree. In my head the interview is going to play out as thus:
SpaceX: What makes you qualified for this job?
Me: Have you seen my postcount?
SpaceX: Welcome aboard!
Last year I came this close to accepting a job at a patent law firm as a technical writer. I really wanted to do it but in the end, it wasn't space related. I love technical writing (I mean hell, I joined Reddit specifically to have an outlet for this) and engineers that can do it well are a rare breed. I have lots of experience so here's hoping this is a shoe-in.
It was a great day yesterday. I applied for jobs at Boeing and SpaceX and about 4 hours later, Boeing shot me down. Which was ironic because that's almost exactly how long it took SpaceX to contact me. A former co-worker told me he was going to refer me for the writing job and based on the speed of the response I thought he had already put in the good word for me. I texted him and he said, "Nope, haven't got around to it yet. That was all you."
Edit: I don't know what the hell is up with Boeing, they never give me the time of day. Oh and the application software from SpaceX would not allow me to attach a writing sample but it would let me attach a cover letter. So the 'cover letter' I submitted was a really long technical document I wrote because I will make them read my shiz. Apparently my little trickery worked.
