Why did you have to design a lot of components everyone knew about?

They requested major design changes at the last minute and I also had to pick all new components because it turned out some of the ones we were going to use wouldn't work for us.

I was just riffing on your 'all-knew' components. :p

I just bought plane tickets!!

I am flying to Bangkok in about 2 months and don't really have a solid plan of what I want to do. I have been doing research and so far it seems that there is enough to see and do in Bangkok to keep me busy for a couple days.. There's also a neat ancient capital just north of there, and by all accounts it's probably worth visiting.

After that I might head to Cambodia to see Angkor Want and the surrounding temples, see Phnom Penh, and then.. I'm not sure, but there is a beach in northern Vietnam that seems really sweet, so I'm going to research whether I'd have enough time to bus by the coast all the way north through Vietnam. Then I could cut through Laos, maybe do a hike there, and end up back in Thailand.

I also want to see some Thai beaches. I have 31 days, or just about 4 weeks if you take out the flights , and I don't want to rush it either... I think the details might all depend on my meeting with a certain native Thai friend I am meeting up with over the next couple weeks for advice.. She was just on a trip there with her boyfriend and is originally from there, so she should be able to give me a lot of good tips. There is also another friend of mine who is travelling in the region in December, so that might affect my plans as well.

This should be awesome... I'm pretty excited!! I have 3 large projects to finish at work before this happens, but no pain no gain

Siem Reap.

Avoid Luang Prabang, so I hear, but apparently north Laos is a good place to head after Halong Bay.

Yeah, Halong Bay is the beach in northern Vietnam that's on my list. Is that the most popular beach in southeast asia or something? If it's going to be super crowded it might make sense to skip it and not head all the way north to see it.

I've heard good things about Luang Prabang! It's supposed to be rustic or something, no? Maybe I'm thinking of another place. If I end up in Laos I will likely do some hiking, that's the one thing in the country that came up during my research so far that seems very promising.

Have you been to Siem Reap? I might very well spend a couple days there, it seems like there's enough cool temples in the area to warrant something like that.

There's so many things to see in the region, I'm struggling a bit taking in all the information. That the languages seem like Klingon to me just detracts from my ability to retain information further.

Either way I'm not sure if doing that loop would be worth it: Bangkok, Siem Reap, Phnem, Ho Chi Minh, north Vietnam, Laos, northern Thailand. I also want to get down to southern Thailand to see some of those pretty beaches down there, so I have been thinking of flying to Phuket from Chiang Mai or something, if I do the "loop". Seems like I'd be rushing things a bit though.. it's Halong bay really that's making me want to do it.

My sister's travelled extensively in the area, but I've just done Siem Reap, Phnom Penh & southern Vietnam. Halong Bay is more than just a beach, but a whole bay of beaches. Though people go for the bay, and not the beaches. Apparently it's insanely touristy (I think you might be hitting the beginning of the peak season?), but worth it if you can get past that.

Luang Prabang is where people go for tubing. Or went, I should say, because they banned it when people kept dying. People kept dying because everyone there is completely hammered, stoned, or most commonly, both, and mixing that with rapid water isn't a good idea. So perfect if you like the whole backpacker partying thing, but I can't think of anything more tacky, to be honest. I guess it might have some non-tubing things too, especially now. :dunno:

Siem Reap is a fantastic place, mostly for Angkor Wat. There are other things around, though, like a good landmine museum, and it's also a really nice place to chill out and drink mango smoothies. And beer (the two main brands being Angkor and Anchor, IIRC).

Phnom Penh isn't so fantastic, but is eye-opening and has some nice things. It's quite seedy, though, and is known for British sexpats. I've been to 44 countries, and crossing the road there is probably my most intimidating experience. Ho Chi Minh City on the surface appears more difficult due to wider roads, but is full of two-wheeled vehicles, while in Phnom Penh you're stepping out in front of expensive SUVs (corruption). They have a harder time dodging you, and less incentive.

The bus ride from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh was the most exhilarating experience of my life, BTW, though that certainly isn't what I want out of a simple trip from place A to place B.

Ho Chi Minh City doesn't appear that great at first, but I loved it by the time I was leaving. Largely just as a place to eat, drink and wander. Nha Trang further up the coast is nice in a way, good beaches, but pretty touristy. I imagine Thailand would be worse though. That's as far north as I got, but apparently Hoi An and Hanoi are pretty great.

I'd say do a loop around south Thailand, and then when you get back to Bangkok, do a loop Siem Reap --> south Vietnam --> north Vietnam --> north Laos --> Bangkok.

I am having a total blast playing as the Bannor in Fall from Heaven. I had last played the Bannor back when FfH was only for vanilla Civ4, and I didn't have great memories of the Crusade civic then. But today I was in some tough straits and decided to have a revolution to adopt Crusade and my God was I blown away! I spawned so many Demagogs from towns that there was literaly no problem that could not be solved if I threw enough Demagogs at it. No catapults facing a dwarven city on a hill? No problem, just throw about 50 demagogs at it. It doesn't matter how many I lose because there are at least twice as more coming up from the homeland, and it increases all the while as more and more cottages mature into towns!

The only possible problem I encountered was that my army is so reliant on demagogs that if I declare peace and switch out of Crusade civic, my army will literally consist of the few Paladins and Confessors that survived the war, a few heroes, and a smattering of archers and axemen. In that case, I will hop in the zeal-mobile and embark on a jihad for justice that isn't over until it is just us.

Zat is interesting, Herr madviking.

(I couldn't resist myself there.)

Discovered last night that there are several people (so it logically follows that there is a possiblity that there are more) who were equally disgusted by the photoshoot those people had...some went so far as to call them "narcissistic" and "douchebags." It actually annoyed a lot of people. So I'm not alone.

And I'm feeling much better about life today.

@Verarde: good. You will go far.

I have found that there are better exercises than jumping to conclusions and running around in circles.

I'd say do a loop around south Thailand, and then when you get back to Bangkok, do a loop Siem Reap --> south Vietnam --> north Vietnam --> north Laos --> Bangkok.

I mapped it out and I think it'd be too hectic to do all that in 4 weeks, unless I really minimized my stops in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. In Cambodia the capital seems worth visiting, but I could skip that. In Vietnam I wanted to also stop in Nha Trang and either Hoi An or Hue... and in between Bangkok and Siem Reap I wanted to stop by that ancient Thai capital.

There's also a potential hike in Laos (1-3 day long) and I guess it's possible to plan it out so that I end back in Thailand after all that in Chiang Mai. From there I think I could fly to Phuket or surrounding region cheap. And then I could fly back to Bangkok just before my flight.

I'm still not sure if that's feasible.. going to need to do more research
