Random Raves X: Success Tactics

Did they ask you what your intentions were in Russia?

Apparently they like to grill westerners on what they're doing entering Russia, as if they're going there to work for a pittance and never go home, for some mad reason. I think its mostly because thats what western countries do to Russians, even though a Russian would have a valid economic reason for wanting to live illegally in places like western Europe or Australia. They just do the ''jump through hoops'' thing for the sake of it like its some sort of indicator of national prestige. This is apparently a Russian trait. I'm basing this on what my lecturer said, and he travels extensively in the former Soviet Union so I'm buying it.

They do it because they have an enormous problem if illegal immigration from places like the steppe republics and junk. They ask you that stuff to make sure you have a reason, and they also contact your immediate residence destination for once you enter the country (whatever hotel or house you're staying at first) to make sure everything is in order. Rather, they do that before you enter the country, when you're applying for the visa. Camikaze, you probably had to supply this information to them, right?

Instead of discriminate against specific countries or nationalities, they just give everyone the same treatment.

Its a noble principle I guess, not discriminating between people from developed countries and the others. But its not very practical is it? The amount of time scrutinising over people who clearly have no intention of staying illegally in Russia must be enourmous.

My lecturer had an amusing anecdote about being escorted by the police from the airport in Moscow to the place he was staying. :crazyeye:

Yeah, I had to have the accommodation voucher/invitation, and you have to register with the police once you get there (although the hostel should do that for me; for a fee), but I got the impression that the consulate was trying to be quite helpful whilst working within the rules it had. Although if I go to pick up my passport next week and the visa was rejected...that will kinda ruin that theory.

It's not Chipotle by any means, but a burrito with chicken slices, corn and beans = WIN. :goodjob:

French students in some of the formerly military colleges still wear uniforms.

This planet really is a small place - I was talking to a girl tonight who was taught by a man I met at a wedding last year on the other side of the Atlantic. (about 3,000 miles / 5,000 kilometers away)

The first proper down pour in about two months happened tonight.

Considering we get rain two days out of three on average it is due to rain from now until the end of July.
