Renaming Units?

I've seen posts where people talk about renaming units--ships, for instance. The only units I've ever renamed are the ones that create leaders...can you rename any unit during play?

how about in the editor?

Click the ABC button to rename a unit in-game (you may need to enable advanced unit orders). This becomes available with PTW, IIRC. You can rename unit types in the editor by clicking the rename button. If you are using vanilla Civ3, you must also change their folder name and .ini filename. To rename an individual unit, create it, right click on it, go to properties and then the Units tab. Select your unit and enter its name in the Name: box (this is PTW+ as well, I believe).

I am playing Conquests, but I don't have an ABC button--how do I enable advanced unit orders? Is it in preferences?

It's in preference, but I think it doesn't appear when you play. It's only in the main menu.

It does appear when you play. The in-game hotkey (Shift+N) will work whether you have enabled advanced orders or not.
