XP. Whenever I come back from screensaver or hibernation I get the error report window.

You really would be better off with the console version setup as a service. It's rock solid stable, and it's going regardless of who is logged in, or if sitting at the logon/welcome screen.

oh well i wouldnt know about that.... i have it on xp aswell...

my comp is set up so it does not hibernate or screensave... not had any problems.. and appart from setting up this team, not altered anything within configuaration.

Huh, I didn't know I could do that. I set it up so that it was only on one account in XP. I'll have to figure out how to switch it.

Do you think that it would have more processing power in the console version?

I need to figure out how to force them to run deadline-less WUs from the console or their efforts will probably be in vain.

I'm pretty sure there's a setting to only ask for projects without a deadline.

Oh, and sloz and VRWC: there are people who are against medical research and science in general. I have not spoken enough with them to understand their viewpoints yet, though.

According to administrators in their forum, the console version is fundamentally the same as the screensaver one, so you're not going to get any significant performance improvement from the console version.

I have just started folding (projected completion: 25 hours) following slozenger's PM alerting me to the thread.

Well, you won't get a performance boost, but you'll get more folding done. Unless I am totally misunderstanding the screensaver client, it is only running when the screensaver is active. The console version is running from the time your turn your computer on until you turn it off, assuming you set it up to run as a service. It (the console version) simply releases the CPU when another app needs it.

My folding runs the whole time, but the account has to be activated and kept on first. There's a little red icon on the bottom right corner, and if I hover my mouse it updates the progress (2700/3000).

Mr. Bard - those estimates don't mean anything, as far as I can tell.

For those interested in setting up the console client as a service, here are the steps to take. I've included a screenshot of the configuration options below, within in the spoiler tag simply to conserve space in the post.
Spoiler :

  1. Download the console client from Stanford's folding download page and place it in a dedicated directory. Personally, I use d:\bin\fah, but use whatever you want.
  2. Open up a console/command prompt window and change to the directory where you have copied/downloaded the console client.
  3. Run "FAH504-Console.exe -configonly". The name may differ if you downloaded a different version of the client or if you've renamed it for whatever reason (I rename mine to fah1.exe).
    1. Enter your user name. I use my logon name here at CFC. The download page (link here) at Stanford Folding has a quick check where you can determine if the username you want is already taken or not.
    2. Enter "47958" as your team number. This assumes you want to fold for CFC.
    3. Answer "yes" to the next question (do not take the default, which is no). This will setup the console client as a service.
    4. The next two questions I don't personally alter, but if you're on dial-up, you may need to change. I suppose maybe change both from no to yes, but I'm not sure. I would think if you're setup to auto-dial whenever an internet connection is needed, you wouldn't need to ask before fetching/sending.
    5. Personal preference on this question. If you want bigger work units, go for it. Note that if you're running on an older system, I wouldn't personally recommend this.
    6. Unless, by looking at the option screen capture, there is something you want to change in the advanced options, I wouldn't bother messing with them. I do allow the advanced methods WU's, but that's totally up to you as a personal preference. Those, combined with bit WU's can really be memory intensive.
  4. Once you're back at a command prompt after finishing the configuration, simply type "exit" and hit enter.
  5. I personally change the name of the service as it appears in the task manager list. If you would like to do this, it is located in the registry at:
    HKLM>System>CurrentControlSet>Services>FAH... (will vary...)
Change the "DisplayName" value to whatever you want. I use "WinFold".
Don't muck with this if you are not comfortable with the registry!
  6. Reboot your machine and enjoy folding in the background, totally automated!

Someone previously asked about deadlines? The option is in the advanced options section during configuration. You cannot miss it as the prompt is "Request work units without deadlines (no/yes) [no]?"

Oh, and my processor count at our team page is utterly whacked now as I typed in the wrong team number the first time around and had to redo, so it is at least boosted by two. Let it shake down after a week and it'll be more accurate. 50 days for total accuracy. :)

YIKES! Before I forget, if you need to stop folding for whatever reason (like playing a system intensive game perhaps :D), simply Start > Run "services.msc". Find the folding service, which will be named FAH(something) or whatever you renamed it to, right-click on it and select "stop". Be sure to either reboot or restart it after you're done playing Civ.

Then we simply need to use different tactics to convince them to join! Perhaps make them think it is a matter of survival...
In Soviet Russia, proteins fold YOU!

A few points:

To avoid crashes, try turning off any screensaver options. I'm not running any and mine is very stable. Of course if you are away from the computer from long periods of time having a way to power down the screen is a good thing. You could turn it off manually if nothing else.

The regular version is always working in the background as mentioned before, the little icon in the taskbar shows the status. It has excellent priority code so it knows to go on hold when the cpu is needed for other tasks.

The estimates are fine, but it takes a little while to compute the average progress depending on how much you are using the computer, so at first they will likely be way off.

I am currently using it to stress test my cooling system. One thing i had to do in order to avoid problems, was to tun the screensaver mode of the client off. It kept popping up while i was watching movies (not so bad) and while i was playing civ (computer choked almost to death). Now it is running fine.

I'm wondering how much cpu it actually uses.. when I check with windows task manager it's always at 50%, but that could be influenced by the task manager working (so f@h goes 'another app needs power, I will turn down my demands')..

Mine always shows 99% whenever I'm not doing anything else.

EDIT: Clarification. The processes tab shows 99% for the client. The performance tab shows the CPU pegged at 100%.

Strange.. mine always sits at 50% and I'm not running anything as such..
