Why not just run the regular version? It puts a nice little icon in the taskbar that tells you how much has been folded and such..

@King Alexander:
You must not have set it correctly somehow, because it shows as a service on my other comps (I'm using a script to start it on the main one).

For one thing, it uses a significant chunk of your CPU to make those purty graphics.

What they really should do is make a version that can use a GPU to do calculations (and PPU's, when they come out). That would be great, since it really is unused when you're not running a game.

I've been running the 5.02 console version (labelling anything "beta" keeps it off most machines I run) with no problems, once I figured it out. It seems that in the DOS box that the console version gives you, once it starts running you have to Control-C to exit, then go into the Services list (via services.msc or whatever) and start the FAH@C+etcetcetc service manually - it'll already be set up for automatic startup at your next boot-up.

I'm using FAHView and FAHServe http://www.kcrew.org/~delsyd/folding.html and they're working reasonably well (the only problem being showing the core and points for certain WUs, which I suspect is not the fault of the FAHView app).

And btw welcome Speedo!

You can create a simple script to restart it.

Right click on the desktop, select New>Text File
Rename to folding.bat (or whatever you want, but it needs the .bat file extension, and you'll have to be showing file extensions to do this)

Then you need the location of your F@H folder ie:
C:\Program Files\Folding@Home
And the name of your F@H executable, default is:
FAH502-Console.exe

Right click on the .bat you created and select Edit. Notepad will open.
Enter the following:
cd <your F@H directory>
start <your F@H .exe>

For the example above you would put in:
Code:
cd %programfiles%\folding@home
start FAH502-Console.exe

After you save, just double click on the script to run it. If you're running MS Antispyware, it will pop and and ask if you want to allow the script to run- tell it yes, of course.

I start it with this script, for another example:
Code:
cd %programfiles%\folding@home1\
start folding1.exe -local
cd %programfiles%\folding@home2\
start folding2.exe -local

And btw welcome Speedo!

Thankee :)

To bad I'm stuck with dialup. Looks like my comp could do about 3 WUs per day, but I know it'll end up getting stuck with no work in the middle of the day or night when there's no connection.

Speedo, you might check out this thread, that deals with that sort of issue:

The worthwhile part of the advice is here:

Configure your client for Deadlineless work units. When you configure the GUI, go to the Connection tab. Check the option for "Ask before using network" if not selected already, and then on the Advance tab at the bottom, select the Deadlineless option from the drop down list, and then check the box for "Get and return deadlineless work units in batches."

And there are similar options for the CLI client. With these settings, F@H will download and cache up to 10 work units. The client won't prompt you to connect again until after 7 units are completed.

:bump: We can't let this thread disappear into obscurity.

Also, we need more folders! Come on, there must be a gazillion registered members here at CFC.

Uploaded my first WU a bit ago, 'cause I forgot to leave it running last night. About to upload #2. The Celerons are chugging along, slowly but surely ;)

It's pretty sad though, the C500 goes through WUs at about 1/12th the pace of my 4400.... since the 4400 chews through each WU 6 times faster and is chewing on two at once. Keeps the room warm, at least. ;)

Ditto here - my C500s are a little over halfway through their first WUs downloaded middle of last week, while other machines have three or four done. However, the WUs the Celerons are working on are 600 point WUs while many of the others are around 100 points, so maybe deadlineless WUs just end up being bigger?

Considering the hysterics my family have if they find a computer on without someone working at it, and that I should really be reading for my dissertation instead of wasting time here, I think I'm not doing too badly to have done just 3 WUs!  But why oh why are they all of the same protein... p2305_BBA%_Mut is deja-vu material. :crazyeye:

BTW - to get more people folding, how about all you folks adding a link to this thread in your sigs or something?

Saving electricity is a perfectly valid reason to not fold. And putting the link in your sig? Who would do something like that?

I uninstalled it because it was making my computer noisy.

It is kinda freaky, isn't it?

Saving electricity is a perfectly valid reason to not fold.

The additional power used when F@H is running is fairly negligable compared to a comp that would be sitting idel anyway. The real power hogs of the system -namely the video card- are still idle while F@H is running and drawing no additional power.

I've set it going on my PC, 1.7GHz P4 but still running ME. I'm at home until Christmas and the PC will be on all day anyway so it might as well work when I'm not actually using it! The graphics crash it if I try to display them but it seems to be running OK otherwise once I persuaded my Firewall to let it download. Looks like I've got a 500 point Work Unit to start off with. There must be a lot of potential with the p2305_BBA5_Mutant protein as that's the one I've got too.

There's no real point displaying the graphics, but they give a sense of accomplishment. As well, if you're interested, you could look up to see what atoms the different balls represent. Then you could see the folding of part of a protein.

I still can't get the graphics to run, but the PC isn't doing too badly and has reached the 10% mark on a 500 point module. I seem to be able to browse CFC OK at the same time so I can do without the graphics. I would have been nice to see what the PC was actually doing though.
