I've been in the USAF for almost 20 years now. I've never been to Iraq (been to Turkey), but many of my friends and comrades have and they all say the same thing, "The news media casts a mostly negative image of the war there."
Here are some facts from my buddies at the front:
1. The insurgents are a very small minority, but they get all the press coverage.
2. A huge majority of the insurgents are not Iraqi, but other Islamic extremists for other countries (Iran, Syria, etc.) looking for a fight and a place to push their radical ideas.
3. Most Iraqis are very greatful for what the Americans are doing, such as building schools, drilling water wells, rebuilding services such as telephone, TV and radio.
4. The majority of US military members over there understand their mission, realize that it's only temporary and are proud to serve there. We do our job and look out for each other so we can all get back home quickly and safely.
There's a lot I'd like to say, but my security clearance forbids it. I can say is that the press thinks they know everything, but they only know about 10% of the real story. Saying that, I can assure you that America knows what it is doing and there are things that the media and average citizen don't need to know.
