The great CFC chain letter part 2: around the world in 800 days!

I hope Valka is ok, I am sure she would have been in touch if she could.:scared:

but maybe The Independent knows something, hopefully:(

I have spent rather a lot of time on aeroplanes recently. I am ashamed to admit that my carbon footprint will be more like a Yeti's after all the travelling I've done in the past few weeks. I've gone short haul, long haul, budget and full service, Europe and America, and I've eaten more complimentary bags of nuts ("may contain nuts", according to the packet) than is good for me.

Is a new yeti a reality?

Ok, I think we can safely assume that Valka can't fulfill her commitment here

I really hope it's not for health reasons... But since she hasn't poked her head up in quite some time, I think we should simply accept that this one is, most certainly, not going to happen.

I'm still up for another try, if other people are interested.

My point being, let's just drop this entirely and start fresh?

But my photo is so awesome

Is this a social experiment btw? "Could a bunch of CFC geeks send a yeti around the world?" .. or send anything around the world even? Because so far we are 0/2. This is turning into a Kerbal around-the-world program.

What if we had several cameras and stuffed things start at the same time? They could circulate in their own countries first to confirm active participants, then cross over to other countries. Eventually at least one might have made it around the world.

I've got two old Droids that are mostly useless, but they still have 5MP cameras and internal storage. I could easily donate these to the cause :salute:

Hi. I humbly apologize to everyone, especially to the friends who emailed me. I have been ill. So has my dad, who's been in the hospital this past month or so.

I've been trying to get decent pictures, but so far they're all crap. I still haven't gotten the hang of this yet, but am determined to make it work.

I haven't been in the best of sorts or headspace to post here, so decided to stay away. My dad is very much on my mind these days. Please be assured, the yeti is safe and unharmed.

Glad to hear from you again! I think we can hold the new sending wave?

VALKA! Good to see that you are safe. I hope your illness is on its way out. My grandmother has been in the hospital for the last 2 months too.. she just had a crazy operation performed on her.. she's all cut up.. it's really nasty :/.. but she's doing better. I hope your dad is alright

I'm no professional photographer, but if you want I could try to help you with some basics in PM. I have some experience with the stuff, but have not been clasically trained or whatever, so a lot of it is just.. instinct. But maybe I could help? In the interests of getting this thing moving along.

Thanks for getting back to us Valka. I'm sorry about yer dad. That sounds pretty awful. Take the time you need. If it's easier, you might consider mailing the Yeti to Zelig now and I'll make sure you get another crack at this later on.

Contre, it is time to start this over or at the next stop or something. I am willing to buy a new traveler and start the trip from here on the original route or a new route you map out. Any more waiting is stupid.

Valka, mail the yeti to Zelig this week. If you don't have a picture that's fine.

Well, I must admit I'm pretty disappointed that there's been no movement, but I'm pleased to report BirdJag stepped up and bought a replacement. It's on its way to you soon, Zelig.

Any interest in Instituting a 2 week rule? If you can't get the picture taken in 2 weeks from receiving it, simply mail it on and we can send it back to you at the end... Or something like that.

Someone too tardy to take a simple picture is going to struggle to get to the post office. I suggest those who remain pledge they can actually be bothered to do the deed before it is posted onto them.

I see what you're saying, but I'd rather have the mystery object or camera passed along within a reasonable time frame - which is exactly what failed to happen with this RL hiccup suffered by Valka.

On May 1, Valka posted that she had secured a camera for this project.

2 days later, on May 3, she posted that she had received the Yeti.

2 weeks after that, on May 17, she posted that she still had the yeti, but was temporarily indisposed - no harm, no foul, life happens; fortunes change.

Then 1 month goes by, and we learn that the instructions for the camera are holding up our group project.

This is what I'm hoping a 2 week rule would avoid - Someone claiming to be ready and willing to participate, but not - especially because 2 weeks had already elapsed before we found out about the first [unfortunate and unforseen] snag. But at this point everyone participating has had the full length of time of this stall - over 4 months!! - to get their ducks in a row figure out how to take a digital photo and ship a small package domestically or internationally.

So I propose that, picture or not, if you're going to remain a participant in this project, you MUST commit to being able to arrange for The Package to be sent along to the next participant within 2 weeks of its arrival.

If there's no support for this, that's fine - I just wanted to clarify what I meant by the 2 week rule. Clearly, this is just an idea, and up for debate. But I'm hoping that we can effect closure on at least one of these gizmos!

You can't account for people who never intend to send along the Yeti in the first place with a 2 week rule.

That's what a public pledge in this thread would accomplish - you pledge to be a willing and capable participant. It's a way to leverage the universal human emotional aversion to shame, which I think came up in another thread recently :hmm:
