The January 20 Thread

Anybody taking bets on whether there will be a Twitter tirade from the White House tonight? Or should we start a pool?

The pro-Trump stupidity has invaded the Canadian news site I belong to. Some of the posters are obviously American - they slip up and use American terms and references we don't have in Canada, and other posters are just Reformacons who are still whining that Stephen Harper lost the election in 2015. They so desperately want a right-winger to be in charge somewhere in North America that they're willing to dance in the streets that it's in another country.

On Jan. 20, the GOP will begin the process of taking healthcare away from 20 million Americans. Trump has promised to replace it with "something better," but in the six years since it's been enacted, the GOP has not been able to come up with an alternative. Let's face it: if you want people with preexisting conditions to have healthcare, some mechanism needs to provide the money.

On Jan. 20, Congress will begin passing the biggest tax-give-away-to-the-rich ever...twice as big as the Bush tax cuts. Billions in inheritances and capital gains will be tax free, while only working stiff will have to pay taxes. The deficient will skyrocket, just as it did when Hoover, Reagan, Bush and more recently in Kansas and Nebraska tried/.

Trump is appointing as Sec. of Education a woman who advocates school prayers, and Trump has promised to appoint only arch-conservatives to the Supreme Court
soon all American children, regardless of religion, will begin the day praying to their government-appointed savior Jesus Christ.

On Jan. 20, Trump will begin his infrastructure program, where the US will borrow money to build toll roads, for which private companies will keep the tolls.

On Jan. 20, environmental regulations will be repealed and pollution will blossom.

On Jan. 20, financial regulation will be repealed and so again Wall Street and big banks will begin ravaging us.

On Jan. 20, Iran will go back to working on a nuclear bomb.

On Jan, 20, the federal government will begin cutting off federal aid to so-called sanctuary cities. Any city which does allow own officers to act as immigration officers, at no cost to the federal government, will face funding cuts. When local law enforcement starts rousting illegal immigrants, victims of robberies, rapes, etc. will stop reporting crimes to police. Witnesses will no longer come forward. With criminals give free reign, the rates of robbery, rapes, murders, and assaults will spike, crime will run rampant, and minorities will be blamed.

After Jan. 20, the number of polling stations in minority neighborhoods will decrease. Job discrimination will increase. Schools in minority neighborhoods will fail even more. Police will be sent in to keep order. This will have the opposite effect as race riots become common place.

Some of these seem like reasonable predictions, but others seem quite off the rails. I'd like to hear some elaboration on the logic (and sources if possible) behind the following predictions:

Trump is appointing as Sec. of Education a woman who advocates school prayers, and Trump has promised to appoint only arch-conservatives to the Supreme Court
soon all American children, regardless of religion, will begin the day praying to their government-appointed savior Jesus Christ.

(It's not prediction of the appointment of conservatives that I take issue with, it's the prediction that prayers will become mandatory in schools)

Are there any stats to back this up? Why would people stop reporting crimes simply because police have been given additional duties?

Again, what indicators do you have to show this will be the likely outcome?

Like I said, most of your predictions seem reasonable because they are in line with what Republicans have done in the past. The ones I pointed out though just sound like the typical "Chicken Little" talk that's been going non-stop since the election.

Yes, there are stats. It's also simple common sense. When people have a legitimate concern that when the police respond to their call part of the response will be asking them for proof of citizenship they are less inclined to call. Even if they are citizens, knowing the cops are likely to take one look at them and say "prove it" makes the prospective encounter seem much less worthwhile. That's why cops in the so called "sanctuary cities" are generally in favor of it. Even the jackbooted thugs of the LA County Sheriff's Department acknowledge that they would rather have the public support than play immigration officer.

Here's Nazi Richard Spencer, who has called for non-white people to be "ethnically cleansed" (his words) from the US, getting punched in the face, if you need a pick-me-up.

Eh, he walked away. A knee below and a straighter forearm/fist combo more to the base of the jaw joint would have had him down for the count. Knee might mess up his ability to make little Nazis too, with any luck.

The right wing take is that Trump supporters had to work today. I guess that is proof that Obama cleaned up W's unemployment mess.

And it was 25 degrees in '09. I wonder if there's a comparable photo of yesterday's march? I did 2-second Google search and didn't see one, but maybe it's too early.

The women's march had so many people, they literally had no room to march anywhere. So they changed the plan to hold a rally at another location. This happened in more than one city.

I think that Melania looked great - the rest... :/
That said, US brought this to its own self, after decades of being all about celebrity, it became a tv show.
Maybe Trump won't be quite as murderous/destructive as highlights like the Bushes or even B. Clinton wars, (or Hillary), but our planet keeps getting dumber by the hour.

Some reasonable figures can be obtained from the DC metro ridership numbers (193k at the same time there were 513k in 2008 and 317k in 2012) and hotel occupancy rate (40% vs 90% in 08, 60% in 2012). So attendance was likely below half (probably 40%) of 2008, as well as being only two thirds of 2012.

Tlotus - Trump bounced a Czech and showed his hatred for American women before he got around to marrying the criminal immigrant.
