Why are recumbent bicycles much less common than upright bicycles?

I don't know if this is true but I've read that due to the fact that recumbent bikes were banned in the 30s by the UCI from their biking competitions (basically, this French dude biked so fast with his that the officials realised that recumbent bikes were unfair). Because of that, it never became as well known as the upright one.
To answer your second question, I would say that it depends:
1) Due to the low height of recumbents, they don't make you nearly as visible to drivers as the uprights.
2) The time it takes for you to start moving forward takes longer with the recumbent than it does with the upright, and it requires more "relative skill". So unless you have a lot of experience and you can start rolling just-like-that when you need to (say, at a traffic light), it's not that convenient.
3) When you are turning, you need more space for your curve.
So if you are going to be biking a lot through an urban environment with lots of cars and not always a lot of space for bends, it's not the best. Luckily, Stockholm has a lot of bike roads so it might not be that bad...
If you have to travel a longer distance, the recumbent is much better because it is way more ergonomic and comfortable.

From what I heard, life happened to him.
